200 kilometers and a little more is the distance that the riders starting this race tomorrow will cover to decide who can claim to be the winner of the third edition of this race. Last year's winner Joeri Stallaert is not back as his team gained promotion and he now plies his trade in the Pro Tour. 2018 winner Baugnies is back to try to win the race for a second time. Unless he does, we are destined to get a new winner.
As one would expect, the best of the best of PCT Northern Classics specialists, and some more, have lined up for this race, and we should be in for a titanic tussle on the hilly cobbled roads in the second half of this race. Who can take his chances and pull out a win? Will it be one of the favourites or will someone unfancied rise from the ashes to surprise everyone?
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Summerhill | 78 | 73 | 76 | 72 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Trentin | 74 | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | 68 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 81 | 72 | 65 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 72 | 71 | Vanspeybrouck | 75 | 70 | 77 | 70 | 81 | 66 | 68 | Daniel | 73 | 69 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 76 | 72 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 66 | 77 | 72 | 80 | 70 | 72 | Baugnies | 77 | 71 | 79 | 72 | 79 | 64 | 72 | Debesay | 75 | 74 | 75 | 79 | 77 | 69 | 78 | Van Avermaet | 74 | 72 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 74 | 72 | Breen | 77 | 70 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 72 | Ferreira | 73 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Van Keirsbulck | 72 | 71 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 70 | 68 |
Summerhill is clearly the best cobbles rider in the division and hence, is the top favourite for this race. Teammate Vanspeybrouck joins him on the startlist, and he too is good enough to be challenging for a Top 5 place at the minimum. The question is whether the latter will be allowed to ride for his own ambitions, or will team orders ruin his chances?
The closes competition is the duo of Trentin and Altur. While the former is slightly weaker over the cobbles, he is stronger in tackling the hills that line the second half of this course and also in case the race comes down to a sprint to the line. It remains to be seen which ability proves the difference in this race. Both can easily take out the win though.
Zepuntke and Vanbilsen are the next in line for the race win, but realistically they are perhaps contenders for a podium if everything goes according to the books. But real life never plays out that way! The former is the better pure cobbles rider, while the latter has stronger support stats to help him overcome the deficit.
Daniel and Vanmarcke are also similarly strong cobbles riders. The former is a faster finisher and has more pulling power, the latter enjoys the flat roads more and is slightly better over long durations.
Debesay might not be as good over the cobbles as the rest of the favourites, but he is as strong a rider as they come, and can use his support stats to overcome his cobbles deficit.
The aging Van Avermaet still can hold his own in a race like this, while Breen and Ferreira have been known to pull out good performances that defy their cobbles capabilities. Van Keirsbulck is another rider in the same mould as Breen and all four the riders mentioned here will be aiming for at least a Top 10 finish.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Sinkeldam | 74 | 75 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 68 | 68 | Benoot | 71 | 78 | 75 | 74 | 76 | 69 | 71 | Moulingui | 74 | 71 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 65 | 68 | Naesen | 75 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 77 | 76 | Tsatevich | 74 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 75 | 75 | 75 | Kristoff | 74 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 82 | 77 | Nolf | 73 | 65 | 76 | 71 | 79 | 62 | 70 | Saber | 75 | 68 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 81 | 79 | Bush | 74 | 63 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Schreurs | 72 | 67 | 75 | 75 | 77 | 72 | 71 |
We get an idea of the depth of the field as riders like Sinkeldam. Benoot, Moulingou, Naesen, Kristoff, Bush and Saber can only make the outsiders list! All of them will be the respective leaders for their teams, and will be hoping to prove the bookmakers wrong.
Carrefour bring both Nolf and Tsatevich as a double threat for this race. It will be interesting to see who actually takes on the leadership role, or if both riders are allowed to race on their own.
Xero bring Schreurs as their second pure cobbled option, and they also have Rowe, who did not even make the outsiders list!

Should I even bother at this point?
Thanks for the preview Abhi

I actually expect this will go to Kristoff, maybe Saber... with the cobbles changes this year, I don't expect this to be too hard of a cobbles race, but with a reduced bunch sprint. Those two are likely to survive until the finish where their kicks will easily run away from the pure cobblers (and my team).

Clearly you haven't seen Saber on the cobbles this year.

I think we got second here last year, so it is possible. But yeah, Vanbilsen has been a bit unfortunate this year.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

So far C1 one day races have been a bit underwhelming for us, never getting into the top-10. If the race is hard enough, there should be no excuses for Baugnies to not deliver this time. Thank you for the preview

The last race in the upper league didn't go well so I have little hopes for GVA this time around. If we get some points it should be good. Thanks for the preview.

I hope for both our sakes that Kent is correct and Saber and Naesen can do something in a sprint finish. However, I share your "optimism" for that scenario in this starting field

Matthew, Edmo and Domene all have a bit of a finishing kick. Plus we brought Kek just in case, and he can handle some cobbles as well. Then Altur is the man if the race is tough.
Basically we have multiple options to handle all scenarios. I predict barely a Top15 based on our season so far.

Honestly, I don't fancy my chances - the relegation train is chugging along.

Maes always seems to perform better the higher the category, so here's hoping the trend continues. |

I'm really not far off... spend all that cash training to 82CB, somehow make Altur a worse rider. Genuinely a cursed season

Anonymous for Sinkeldam and then can't do anything in the sprint. About what could be expected. Thanks for the report!

Another plain Top10 for Vanmarcke. Good to see that he's not having any terrible days, but this kind of results doesn't give too much points anyway

We are all in the same boat called S.S. Disappointment. I may need an contingecy plan when I face the inevitable relegation
