Tour of Britain

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/c1_bri.jpg

September begins with the Tour of Britain, a race with a long and storied Man-Game history. With three hilly stages and a 53.6km ITT on the menu, it's no surprise to see a number of the top PCT puncheurs and TTers here to test themselves - but will the hills prove too hard for the latter, or is the TT too long for the former to make up time?

Those hoping for a high degree of selection on the hilly stages are headlined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Prevar. However, they face a challenge from one of their usual rivals even if they manage to recoup their losses to the TTers, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre here as one of the strongest riders both going uphill and on the TT bike.

The Puncheurs

On the other hand, there are a number of strong TTers who will be hoping that the hills fail to generate significant time gaps. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel is in a class of his own as a TTer as well as being solid on the hills, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet will need a lot of luck to avoid losing major time to the puncheurs. One to watch is also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev, who used to dominate races like this in his younger years - does he have one last hurrah in him?

As well as the top puncheurs and the top TTers, there are a number of riders present who combine the two well without particularly excelling at either. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Gallopin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou are the main names to watch here, and could all reasonably expect to fight for a GC top 10.

Finally, with Stage 2 looking like one for the sprinters a number of fast men have made the trip to the UK. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Drapac and home favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Rowe are the headliners, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Modolo will fancy his chances if the hills during the second stage have a significant impact.

Well, I guess we're a bit under the radar in this one, too - which worked out pretty well in Austria. Which hopefully means a lot of breakaway action again.
But I wouldn't rule out Masnada for the GC; with 75 Mo, 75 Hi and 71 TT, he could definitely leave some of the pure puncheurs behind - both in the TT and on the final stage, where the mountain stat should come into play imho.

Freuler and Thièry should try some more breakaways, which especially Freuler has already been pretty successful in. But yeah, hills were quite unpredictable so far, so I'll happily take any points we can get from here.

Thanks for the preview!

Pre-season I was excited for this race and the ones like it, now I am filled with sadness at how bad Bazhkou is now (not to mention Dyrnes who is also just bad, and can't really make a bad MO excuse since he has 72). Hopefully either of them can give me some hope for their future scoring potential here, they're running out of time.

Time trial will hurt Claeys, which I should have seen during planning. JvR has been in good form lately, and Drapac might actually have a shot at winning something.

Frankly, I have to be happy to get even a single point from Juul-Jensen here. He has been atrocious, and I don't see that ending. Ranneries probably has a better shot of scoring here in the sprint stage, and that's sad.

But all we can do is try. If he doesn't sit at the back and msis splits, at least his TT is slightly better than some other puncheurs.

Should be an interesting race. The hybrids should do well here, but how much selection we get will decide the if the pure puncheurs can hang in the GC.

This will be a very fun race to watch, especially with the extreme TT midway. Can Sterobo salvage a nice GC placement on that stage? Good form will be vital.

We also hope to see Modolo up there.

Thanks for the good and interresting preview and statistics jph! Smile

Everything but podium for Izagirre would be disappointing. Hopefully, these hills will be too much for pure TT-ist like Durbridge this time. Fingers crossed for hard and selective opening stage.

This could be a big race for us between coppel and our hilly guys. Really hoping this is the one to do big time damage in the relegation battle

Hoping for some stage results from Bilbao and that's probably the most I can hope for Pfft

Another opportunity for Gallopin to impress. Expect nothing from Ignatiev based on his performances in these kinds of races earlier this season, but Gallopin could potentially challenge for a top 10. Hoping the hill stages will be tough enough to reduce the peloton a fair bit, but not so tough that we'll see serious gaps.

Not expecting Durbridge and Viennet to survive the GC here, but it would be welcome Wink
But we do come in with Koren who has done pretty damn well in these types of races considering he was a late transfer season buy for us. Hoping that first stage isnt too selective so then the TTers have the upper hand.

Cant look past Izagirre for the win here, good luck to everyone!

Hey Dyrnes, you know what? If you're going to continue to pretend you're a 75HI rider, that's an alright way to go about it Pfft If he can take the KoM jersey that would be cool, don't like that he got dropped by Mehr-Weninge, they ended up in the same time but if that had ended in the latter being involved in a stage win battle I'd have been pissed off (or if it continues if they have a KoM fight in the days to come).

Tom Davison in 6th is unexpected and very cool, would have definitely thought him and Dyrnes would be the other way around if you told me that I'd get a 6th and the KoM lead between them Pfft Maybe he can do a decent GC with his solid TT skill - a team mainstay and one of our better riders and top domestiques in the CT days so nice to see. Bazhkou on a s.t. finish is cool, hopefully he can do well here and prove he still has value - especially if it's down to him never being considered a leader before this due to Dyrnes or Houle's presence, then I'll see what I can do for him next year. Still four stages to go to think about that, but a positive start for sure!

Ooof, big losses for my other riders so it's all in on Koren, looks like he survived well in the first stage, hopefully that will mean we are in a good place for the GC as well. Hopefully we'll be in the mix for stage wins as well in the next 2 stages.

No points on today's stage, but seeing our best Mo-Hi-hybrids in 11th, 12th and 13th is definitely nice. Of these, Masnada should be able to keep a decent GC place after stage 3, hopefully gaining some time on most of the top puncheurs. We'll see...

Thanks for the report!

He did crack in the sprint though, so I shouldn't get too excited here. But he's doing better than usual at least, for now.
