Tour of East Java Preview
We've flown to Indonesia for the annual two day bike race on the island of Java. Last year's race saw Adam Yates beat more fancied opponents to pick up a win on stage 2 and claim the GC. Yates is back to defend his crown but the field is much stronger than it was last season, owing to the step up of this race to PTHC status. The short flat Stage 1 provides an opportunity to one of the sprinters to hold the jersey for the first day, and last year that honour went to Matthew Goss, who returns to try again.

An incredible climbing field lines up in this race this season. Madrazo starts off as top favourite, with his combination of climbing prowess and excellent backup stats.
Dombrowski should be the Spaniard's closest competitor, and will be looking to build on a solid showing for his team last season.
The trio of Tenorio, Kritsky and Alarcon look to be the main podium contenders in addition to the previous duo. While Tenorio and Kritsky boast better energy stats, Alarcon will look to utilize his acceleration in the final climbs to gain an advantage to the competition.
A couple of riders next up who'd surely have been top favourites for this race last season: Uran and Kudus look to be in contention fora Top 5 finish at most, and will be hoping to overcome more illustrious rivals to get closer to the podium.
Amador is a real wildcard pick here, and his performance will depend on whether he can live up to his climbing strength. His backups might just hold him back from a top result.
Hirt, Martin, Cattaneo and Wellens are the other riders who can make a Top 5 push and will be disappointed if they cannot get into the Top 10. At least two of them will be disappointed, however.
The others in the list are all capable of over-performing on a good day, with Yates especially hoping for a repeat of last season. Berhane, too, is a former winner and will be hoping to upset the apple cart.

If Bennett could near a top 10 I'd be over the moon with this one but I'm expecting an anonymous 19th or more likely even lower Breaks in both stages please, maybe Areruya or de Kleijn in it on stage one could give us some U25/KoM provisional points and a bit of entertainment

First test for Madrazo. Really hope his era of underperforming ends this season.

This race should bring us points hopefully.
Uran has won all PTHC stage races he has entered, hopefully he'll continue the streak. Drapac for a fluky sprint result.

It's Carlsberg's opener to the season, but we don't have too many eggs in it. We'll see what happens. Great preview!

Three 80+ sprinters attending for that Stage 1. So i predict one rider in the Top15 and the other two no where to be seen, followed by zero breakaway effort on Stage 2 from anyone

I have to hope that the mountain stage doesn't come down to a sprint in the final kms, instead of the first climb being properly used. If it comes down to the first, it's almost wasted RD's for the team, having sent here basically everything we have for the mountains.
Let's hope for active racing in the mountain then, so Alarcon doesn't have to use his bad hill skills for the finish

To be expected that the field would be stacked with top mountain talent given the 2RD for stage race points potential. In comparison to last season, this is a step up in category for the event. Down Under Classic is always a start to the season not suited to our organisation, so this is the real kick-off. Target is to get the ppRD ball rolling. Given now PTHC, have to expect that Berhane slips down a few spots from result last season. Conversely hope that PCM18 AI hates Ji a little less than PCM15, and he can pick up some better points so that across the Berhane/JI partnership things even out. Given don't have favourites for either stage, maybe a BotD appearance?
First race of the season where there is an outside chance that Santos might feature in a sprint (st 1), so will be studying the images closely to see if he shows his face up front, or is instead considered pack-fodder. No results expected from him, just looking to see if he shows up somewhat.

Came here to hunt and take opening stage, wear yellow jersey and ideally share point jersey at the end of Day 2.
However, with strange AI behaviour in races I´ve participated so far (plus Qatar and Tachira), I expect completely different scenario with random 80+ sprinter or even breakaway win.

Have to say this was one stage I kind of had my eye on when I said that will happen at some point in the season in the roundtable preview. Fingers crossed I'm wrong

This one will be very interesting to follow, to see how AI handles the easier mountain stages. So far this season it feels like we need to get used to surprise result, taking away some of the "security" it always has given to have a top, top rider. Kind of hope that trend turns here, considering Taaramäe's season and what's to come there
If this was the previous season, I'd say Dombrowski is the favourite. Here though, I've got no clue |

Goss! "My" man still rocking East Java.
Three Aussies in the Top-5 and Ewan as the worst of them. TMM won't be happy. From a personal point of view though, nice to see a second former rider (Drapac) doing surprisingly well.

A shame Higuita couldn't grab the KoM jersey but cool to see him in his first ever break along with Kennett, and the latter grabbing the U25 jersey in a 1-2 is very cool. A few assorted points and Bennett safe is a good day for us here! Congrats to Goss and Eden!

Good start to the race, now next stage is the important one. We need a Top 5 if survival in the PT is going to be any way near possible
