Nantahala Classic
The Nantahala National Forest is a national forest located in the American state of North Carolina. The word "Nantahala" is a Cherokee word meaning "Land of the Noonday Sun." Nantahala National Forest is the largest of the four national forests in North Carolina, lying in the mountains and valleys of western North Carolina. The terrain varies in elevation from 5,800 feet (1,767.8 m) at Lone Bald in Jackson County, to 1,200 feet (365.8 m) in Cherokee County along the Hiwassee River below the Appalachian Dam.
Parts of this area will be featured in the first edition of this one day classic: the Nantahala Classic enters the MG schedule as a C1 event. The rather short course comes with quite a challenging final third of the total amount of 172km. Not the steepest climbs here, but plenty of opportunities to attack the main group prior to a short (2km) uphill finish.
The Startlist
The Favorites Favorites | HI | AC | DH | | Outsiders | HI | AC | DH | Di Maggio | 82 | 75 | 73 | | Gougeard | 77 | 68 | 61 | Schreurs | 81 | 74 | 66 | | Skjerping | 77 | 65 | 73 | Klemme | 80 | 66 | 62 | | Lopez | 76 | 74 | 69 | Izagirre | 80 | 64 | 70 | | Kebede | 76 | 72 | 63 | Ben Nasser | 79 | 77 | 68 | | Bravo | 76 | 70 | 71 | Kwiatkowski | 79 | 75 | 69 | | Kudus | 76 | 70 | 67 | Bilbao | 79 | 75 | 66 | | Orlov | 76 | 70 | 64 | Prevar | 79 | 73 | 66 | | Nzeke | 76 | 68 | 74 | Siskevicius | 78 | 75 | 64 | | Rabottini | 76 | 68 | 64 | Serry | 78 | 69 | 66 | | Michely | 75 | 75 | 77 | Duchesne | 77 | 79 | 51 | | Anderson | 75 | 75 | 72 | Squire | 77 | 71 | 65 | | Favilli | 75 | 74 | 62 | Pellaud | 77 | 70 | 67 | | Mancuso | 75 | 73 | 77 | Vichot | 76 | 80 | 73 | | Bernas | 75 | 73 | 71 | Kadri | 76 | 78 | 74 | | David | 75 | 73 | 70 |
Quite a nice mix of PCT and CT teams coming to the United States in order to write their names on the empty winner's list:
Di Maggio should fancy his chances on the short loop through the National Forest and given some strong support (Serry, Skjerping, Michely or Mancuso), there's really no excuse for him to miss out on a notable result here. The same goes for Novatek and their strong duo of leaders: Schreurs and Klemme amongst the strongest puncheurs and it's either a chance for a tactical, early move or Klemme providing some great support for Schreurs.
Izagirre has had his moments this season, but also tends to struggle at times. His lack of acceleration is an issue, but at least he's amongst those riders, who can handle the several downhill sectors pretty well. Aiming for the podium or at least a Top-5 must be his goal and he certainly should hope for a selective race rather than a sprint from a reduced main group on this final short climb up to the finish.
Ben Nasser, Kwiatkowski, Bilbao, Prevar and Siskevicius build a promising core of contenders for the top spots. They all come with at least a solid acceleration and could become very dangerous for the premium puncheurs here.
Squire will hope for a strong outing on home soil, Pellaud and the fast kicking duo Vichot/Kadri may hope for a less selective race, where positioning and acceleration comes into play.

I like to call this race the "Kudus experiment". He had a couple of spare RD's, so with the Beijing clash i thought he might have a chance to get a decent result in a hilly classic, or at least give me an opportunity to see how good/bad he can do in this type of races for future planning decisions.
In a safer option we have Duchesne, with his massive acceleration hopefully will contest a possible sprint finish

Oh god, two punchy races going on at the same time, unlike Chaves though I actually trust Squire to perform up to expected levels. Should have a good chance for points here.

Kind of a filler race for us. Hoping somebody can do something, but any result here would be a bonus.

12th place for Duchesne is decent, but the "Kudus experiment" was clearly a fail this time. Hoped that MON stat could play something here, but clearly it didn't

I really like Schreurs and I don’t really know why, so good to see he won! Kinda forgot he was in the division honestly, hopefully he keeps this form going.

Schreurs probably the deserving winner in this field. The weaker start-list means that a number of the CT teams attending didn't go home empty-handed. ENI - Mol in particualr with a stellar day; 2nd + 4th in a C1 is a big points haul for a CT outfit that may well have a strong impact on the CT standings this month.

So apparently we were here. I totally missed that. We basically weren't though, so, in the end, no loss except missing a solid report.
