Sakartvelo Trophy
Georgia (Georgian translit.: sakartvelo) is a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. Located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, it is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi. This new event on the MG calendar takes place in the area of Tbilisi.
The Sakartvelo Trophy features a rather unique profile for a mountain classic: not the longest, but steep climbs, 215km in total and a velodrome as the finish after a tricky downhill sector in the suburbian area of Tbilisi. Stamina, climbing and downhill skills, as well as smart tactics will be needed here.
The Startlist
The Favorites | Favorites | MO | ST | AC | DH | Outsiders | MO | ST | AC | DH | Anacona | 79 | 75 | 61 | 57 | Koshevoy | 76 | 71 | 69 | 75 | Pantano Gómez | 79 | 73 | 68 | 68 | Baltazar | 76 | 71 | 69 | 68 | Elissonde | 78 | 76 | 66 | 72 | Briceno | 76 | 71 | 70 | 68 | Campero | 78 | 75 | 71 | 74 | Aasvold | 76 | 71 | 72 | 67 | Warbasse | 78 | 75 | 65 | 68 | Mat Senan | 75 | 74 | 70 | 59 | Rodrigues | 78 | 71 | 72 | 68 | Niyonshuti | 75 | 73 | 67 | 61 | Stancu | 78 | 70 | 71 | 66 | Løvik | 75 | 72 | 66 | 68 | Hoem | 77 | 74 | 62 | 72 | Izagirre | 75 | 71 | 63 | 65 | Mai | 77 | 67 | 60 | 63 | Moyano | 75 | 71 | 64 | 56 | Samwel | 76 | 76 | 59 | 51 | Juodvalkis | 75 | 69 | 68 | 58 | Brandt | 76 | 74 | 66 | 71 | Camargo | 75 | 66 | 65 | 63 | Kebede | 76 | 73 | 72 | 63 | Poels | 74 | 78 | 69 | 73 | Heider | 76 | 72 | 61 | 70 | Lopez | 74 | 73 | 74 | 69 | Grigrian | 76 | 72 | 73 | 56 | Wang | 74 | 73 | 65 | 66 | Affonso | 76 | 72 | 68 | 53 | Bugge | 74 | 73 | 72 | 63 |
Two Colombians top the list of favorites: from the CT, it's Anacona, who will aim to put his list on the blank honour roll here. He's surely a strong climber with a good stamina - on the other hand, his acceleration and downhill skills may become a signficant weakness on this profile. Opposing to PCT entry Pantano Gómez, who's solid on downhill sectors and who's acceleration ain't too concerning against the competition, that's attending in Tiblisi.
From the next best climbers Elissonde, Campero, Warbasse, Rodrigues and Stancu, we should probably fancy Campero's and maybe Elissonde's chances the best. Campero seems to have the best overall package with a good stamina, solid acceleration and superior downhill skills. Elissonde does lack an explosive kick, but he should love the amount of kilometres here in Georgia.
Other possible contenders could be Hoem, Mai, Brandt, Kebede, Heider or Grigrian. Amateur's entry Samwel may fear the final descending kilometres, just like Gigrian or Affonso. Koshevoy, however, may become his team's first option, since he's a proven attacking rider, who handles descents pretty well.

Hope a cool profile plays out well. Scandalous to see Pantano allowed in, but I'll cheer for him nonetheless

Got lucky with the startlist here with the absence of the other CT big names. Perfect chance for Pantano to do well and he really should with those stat combos. Hopefully we improve our CT points total of 3 out of 4 RDs used so far

Well, we are here, but not expecting anything! Looks pretty open for the win, I'll go for Campero.

Cool little startlist with the top climbers not present, hoping Warbasse can build on his past climbing results and land a solid result here, maybe Baltasar too since the competition isn't fierce.

I know this clashes with Bulgaria, but surprised some of the CT 'hitters' are missing given they are also not attending Bulgaria. Means there is some chance for WCC to actually (somewhat) compete in this rare C2 outing. Look forward to the race report.

13th and 14th, not really a good result but at least both were there, not a disaster.

Very happy with a podium for Pantano, his best result of the season. Excellent support from Mai. Was a shame he fell off at the end. Him and Poels getting some more points for us is excellent. Our best CT result of the season.
Congrats on the win dominox and thanks for the report

Not a bad ride. I was hoping for a podium but Campero couldn't quite finish the sprint off. Still a great 4th place! Go team!

On our final of 3 C2 outings this season, at last a decent outcome. 6th, 10th and 19th a good return given the squad's relative strength. Nice to see some of our reliable domestiques having the chance to race for themselves. C2 races not worth many points in the bigger scheme of things in PCT; nonetheless, not going to complain in any way in bettering our current ppRD average here - that's a nice take-home message.
Thanks to TSM for the report .
