Winter Sport 2017/2018

So only one month left to Olympig games in Pyeongchang.
Whats your highlights there?

For me as a Swede obviously Charlotte Kalla´s chances in the cross country skiing and the other skiers. As well "Tre Kronors" in the Hockey.

Today starting of with breakfast and looking at Kaiser Maximilian Lauf in the Visma Ski Classic Tour followed later with the Sprint in Dresden for the "standard" skiers.

Kinda offtopic but those scheduled times are so frustrating, they're literally the worst case scenario for me and I hope the Olympics never are awarded to Asia for the next 60 years I'm alive Pfft

And Tokyo summer Olympics are gonna be exactly the same ffs

2022 Winter Olympics are held in Beijing, so the next three Olympic Games are in eastern Asia.

Not sure, but I hope the time zones are decent for the next olympics as an Aussie, as last times' was horrible and the winter olympics are usually even worse (not that I care as much). I remember watching a little bit of the beijing games when I was 5, so it does seem it will be better.

Nothing much to talk about pre-Pyeongchang 2018, but to sum it up:

1. NHL won't budge meaning that we're back in the Soviet days of hockey.
2. Russia is still pissed off of not being able to be at the Olympics.

Ole-Einar Bjørndahlen may not be in Pyeongchang 2018 at all. Based on the Nations Cup rankings from the 2016-17 Biathlon World Cup, Norway can send up to 6 male and 5 female athletes for the Olympics (in total 11), but can nominate only 4 for Sprint/Pursuit and Individual (20km) events as well as the Relay (i.e. they can use an athlete who didn't compete in any of the individual events). OEB's performances this season however aren't spectacular and he finished outside of Top 40 in the 20 km in Ruhpolding. Considering the internal competition within the Norwegian team, it seems that this would be the first Olympic Games since 1992 to not feature Bjørndahlen's name

I think we will be smarter after the Antholz WC round. If he starts there and doing good, then will be in Olympics. Else, the 2*Boe, Svendsen, Birkeland, LAbbe Lund, Christiansen (probably) lineup still strong, but OEB still better then Christiansen in some circumstances. My thoughts are that if he doing good in Anterselva, he can do the 20km individual, and if he do good there , then the relay too.

Winter Olympics are simple for me: Does it have a snowboard? Yes = Watch it. Is it Ski-cross or freestyle? Yes = Watch it. Is it anything else? Yes = don't care at all.

And whilst timezones will make watching live awkward the BBC always do a brilliant job of coverage making catching up in the daytime super easy.
Can't wait, will be fun.

Speaking of athletes missing out Pyeongchang, we can sure thank one organisation for this - NHL. With the excuse that "Olympics disrupt our calendar and we're affraid that injury prone players might get hurt there" and IOC's hesitance to cover the costs for NHL players caused the hockey tournament to be less spectacular as the star power came from the NHL players themselves.

This puts Russ...ahem Olympic Athletes from Russia in pole position for the gold since they can afford using their KHL (the Continental Hockey League a.k.a. Russia's answer to NHL) players bringing back when the Soviet Army steamrolled everything in its path (yes, all Soviet hockey players were part of the millitary one way or another). But did you know that the hockey tournament was under even bigger fiasco had KHL forbid all their players (doesn't matter if they're from Belarus, Sweden etc.) from competing if Russia was excluded entirely? And the hockey tournament would have been filled with amatuer players and juniors from the minor/college leagues.

South Korea is UTC+9 meaning that 12-15:00 there would be 4-7:00 in the morning in most of Europe (CET-UTC+1). Most events however would be in the evening - around 18-21:00 Korean Time. This would be more convenient for us in Europe as it will be 10-13:00 CET.

But we have to feel sorry for the fans in North America though

Jamaica is sending a women's bobsleigh team to next month's Winter Olympics: https://t.co/UzyiduiFYo

Cooler Runnings Pfft

Weeks before Pyeongchang 2018 here are some headlines:

* North and South Korea would send a joint hockey team in the women's competition. A proposed joint Korea bobsleigh team is also proposed in the women's event
* A huge controversy has surrounded the OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia) - Anton Shipulin, Sergey Ustyugov and Victor Ahn were not included in the shortlist for eligible Russian athletes in the 2018 Olympics. These three have never been accused of using PED at Sochi 2014, but despite that they might not have been included as they were part of the Russia's Sochi list.

Today is the opening ceremony of the XXIII Winter Olympics at 11:00 GMT which is good for us in Europe, but I feel bad for the wintersport fans in the Americas (mainly US and Canada).

47 Russian athletes (among them the afromentioned above Shipulin, Ustyugov and Ahn) appealed their ban from the games in the CAS. While 28 athletes were acquitted earlier due to "severe lack of evidence", this request was (for better or worse) denied. So, 168 athletes will be part of the OAR team in Pyeongchang - the 4th largest delegation, little bit less than what they've sent in Vancouver (I'm discarding Sochi as they had the largest one since they were the host)

Must say I liked the opening cermony, been watching the whole show now without getting really bored.

About 18 hours to the real fun starts IMO for Sweden with a good medel chance is Cross Country Skiing, 15 km Skiathlon for Women.
Lets go Kalla & Nilsson. And Jessica Diggins, always fun when she does good!
