Volcan de Agua Classic
2nd edition, 1st at this level, for the Continental Tour’s very own Liechtenstein GP: the Volcan de Agua Classic, raced in Guatemala. And well, there’s not much to add to the profile pic shown above. 3 times up and down the Volcan de Agua ascent, that measures 28.5 kms of length in the uphill section, with an average slope of 6% and the steepest sections touching 12%. This means that the elevation gain equals 5300 meters circa.
Last year’s edition in C1 was dominated by Janez Brajkovic, who obviously isn’t back this year just like most of the rest of the top 10 – Sella and Antón made the step down to CT and are back here as favourites again.
This time around, the race should be a lot closer, with a startlist that is crowded with some of CT’s best climbers. Sella, Garby, Antón, De la Cruz, Pomoshnikov, Hacecký, Salinas, nearly everyone you would expect to show up is here, and each of them have proven what they’re capable of. However, they haven’t faced each other in so many in a one-day race, until today.
Let’s take a closer look at this not very long startlist then!
Climber | MO | ACC | RES | STA | Climber | MO | ACC | RES | STA | Krasnoperov | 80 | 61 | 69 | 68 | De Marchi | 76 | 71 | 71 | 74 | Sella | 79 | 73 | 78 | 72 | Khripta | 76 | 69 | 72 | 75 | Garby | 79 | 70 | 76 | 71 | Kung | 76 | 68 | 68 | 69 | Antón | 78 | 76 | 76 | 72 | Sarmiento | 76 | 66 | 74 | 70 | De la Cruz | 78 | 73 | 76 | 72 | Nakane | 76 | 65 | 71 | 68 | Pomoshnikov | 78 | 66 | 76 | 78 | Lundberg | 76 | 65 | 71 | 66 | Hacecký | 77 | 75 | 76 | 71 | Di Gregorio | 75 | 75 | 74 | 68 | Salinas | 77 | 72 | 74 | 74 | Öste-Macdonald | 75 | 74 | 75 | 65 | Hirschlein | 77 | 59 | 71 | 71 | Tatarinov | 75 | 73 | 71 | 71 | Rienda Segura | 76 | 77 | 63 | 66 | Moreno | 75 | 72 | 73 | 72 | Ardila Cano | 76 | 76 | 73 | 62 | Karagobek | 75 | 71 | 68 | 71 | Martinez | 76 | 75 | 71 | 73 | Landa | 75 | 71 | 73 | 68 | Rojas Villegas | 76 | 74 | 71 | 60 | Mat Senan | 75 | 70 | 71 | 74 |
As I mentioned before, the list of top tier favourites is unusually long. If you asked me to name an outright top contender, I wouldn’t be able to do so.
They range from the cold killers, the tactically sound Garby, Pomoshnikov and Salinas, riders that would rather wait for the last kilometer to drop everyone else, to the more “exciting” types of Sella, Antón, De la Cruz and Hacecký. Mostly, it will come down to who comes in Guatemala with the best legs, and whoever suffers American July’s heat the least.
Talking about some of the outsiders, you would have to mention Ardila Cano, Martinez, New Balance’s duo of De Marchi and Khripta, Kung and Nakane, all riders that will be first in line to fight for a top 10 or more, not to talk about some of the top domestiques some teams brought here that could easily lead weaker teams. Oh and Krasnoperov, who deserves a special shout-out and no comments.

The field is incredibly tough, so the team really has to take control and protect Garby well. If they do, Garby has a good chance of our goal of a podium. Top 5 would be fine too, but anything below that, even in this field, would be disappointing. At least hill shouldn't matter at all in this one.

Win goal here due to our HQ being situated in the country. After recent events though, I hope all riders will come off the mountain in one piece.

Well, Salinas could come 1st or 21st, let's hope it's more towards the former in such a deep, talented startlist. Thanks for a nice preview Matt!

I just want Kung to keep it rubber side down and stay attentive, so far I don't think he's had a race where he has managed both, before seeing the startlist I was goin to say top 10 is his goal but just keeping upright, staying alert and scoring something will make me happy now after seeing just how many strong climbers are here and how his season has gone so far.
Maybe his Hill Stat will mean something but I doubt it judging by how he normally does, that said I never realised his Res stat was so bad compared to other climbers so maybe that's part of it and something we can look at improving through training in the future.
I think Sella is the favourite and would say it's between him and Anton for the win.

Disappointing, I think the local fans are not happy at all with this performance.
Spoiler: they are definitely not happy
Congrats on the surprising victory for Spark, and thanks Matt for the report

I was really close to a triumphant win, but obviously have 2nd and 3rd will make up for that in points.
At first I was wishing Ebsen would drop back earlier to help Garby, and maybe that would have gotten Garby a win, but in the end by holding on for 3rd he made it really worth while. Garby looked really good too, riding all of his rivals off his wheel.
Hopefully Garby will continue that form in USAPCC. Congrats to Spark on the breakaway win, and thanks to Matt for the awesome report!
I wanted a podium and I got two! Can't complain about that.

For a brief moment I thought Ikibe might get our win goal but it was Spark who got the breakaway win, nice one.
I expected 1 top 10 and got 2 so pretty happy with that result, not as good as BBO with 2 on the podium, smart work from the team there
Another great report, thanks Matt.

not good enough, especially seing that our danish classement rivals outscored us here in clinical manner - surely they're miles ahead now...
Btw: Did you recognize how Anton is the Rojas of MGCT nowadays?
thx Matt

20th place isn't exactly what we need points wise but at least we managed to stay upright and get something out of it, which it is a shame to be saying about someone I had high hopes for preseason.
