Viana do Castelo
Category: C1 | 206,4 km | terrain: hilly cobbles | Portugal |
The CT hills dominator Summerhill lost one of the few cobbled races in last years first edition of Viana do Castelo to Lars Boom in a flying one-on-one sprint. This year the defending champion isn't taking part as he stepped up into the highest division. Surely the race to go for the american then as one of the few cobbled PCT races he didn't won so far; and he's the outright favourite. Can anybody beat the Azteca-one man show? Chances are there for the cobbles with a decent punch ( Baugnies) or for the even better puncheurs than can cobble quite well ( Gilbert). Out of the pure cobblers it seems that Vanbilsen should bring the most well-rounded skillset to the race. Let's see how this normally unpredictable race works out with the following favourites:
| | Cob | Fla | Hil | Sta | Res | Spr | Acc | Summerhill | Danny | 83 | 78 | 73 | 76 | 72 | 70 | 73 | Zepuntke | Ruben | 81 | 72 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 72 | 64 | Sibilla | Michel | 81 | 71 | 63 | 72 | 68 | 66 | 64 | Baugnies | Jérôme | 80 | 78 | 72 | 80 | 73 | 65 | 73 | Vanbilsen | Kenneth | 80 | 78 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 72 | 71 | Cancellara | Fabian | 80 | 80 | 68 | 71 | 71 | 68 | 68 | Ferreira | Ricardo | 79 | 73 | 68 | 74 | 70 | 71 | 69 | Franzoi | Enrico | 79 | 75 | 66 | 74 | 68 | 55 | 68 | Gaudin | Damien | 77 | 74 | 68 | 77 | 69 | 57 | 71 | Eeckhout | Kevin | 77 | 72 | 61 | 71 | 71 | 64 | 57 | Langeveld | Sebastian | 76 | 76 | 72 | 78 | 70 | 63 | 73 | Lagab | Azzeddine | 76 | 73 | 71 | 72 | 67 | 72 | 74 | Joseph | Stijn | 76 | 74 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 66 | 70 | Nepomnyachsniy | Alexandr | 76 | 74 | 64 | 74 | 66 | 78 | 76 | Taubel | Christoph | 76 | 72 | 64 | 68 | 72 | 61 | 64 | Debesay | Mekseb | 75 | 74 | 73 | 74 | 78 | 69 | 78 | Gaday | Lucas Manuel | 74 | 67 | 73 | 72 | 70 | 68 | 71 | Potts | Marc | 74 | 73 | 73 | 73 | 74 | 68 | 71 | Vermote | Julien | 74 | 75 | 70 | 74 | 71 | 68 | 72 | Gilbert | Philippe | 70 | 78 | 78 | 77 | 73 | 66 | 72 | Kuznetsov | Vyacheslav | 69 | 76 | 70 | 75 | 73 | 72 | 75 |
Note that the race report will be done by jandal. I jumped in to help out with the preview today, cause he's got some time issues currently. So please don't rant on the shorter preview this time :)

The usual suspects here, let's see if Strava can finaly win their cobbled classic. Of course I wouldn't mind a Lierse win either
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

One of my fav races, and also a goal race. So I hope we do particularly well. langeveld was very fine last season, Baugnies can even top that now. With the season's been going so far, a Top 3 must be the minimum here.
Looking forward to jandal's report and thanks for taking over the preview, croatia.

Love the profile of his race, the long climb without any cobbles should really mix it up with the cobblers, especially given how late it is, on that note it should be Summerhill, but on past races it should be Baugnies. Gilbet is a very interesting inclusion though, would be cool to see him win, and if the hill means enough in comparison to the cobbles, it could happen.
Thanks for the previe Croatia

This is a very unique race in that the cobbles are tackled on the downhill side of the course. As such I always worry if they will have enough effect and with a deeper list of riders this year than last I'm even more worried. But we need a win by Danny as our points are dwindling too low to keep us up.

It's Portugal actually, not Italy
No expectations for this race except for a lower top-10. Cancellara's performance on the cobbles hasn't been great this season, and I expect this to be nothing but a follow-up of that. Vermote and/or Kuznetsov will overperform again though seeing that they're mentioned in the preview

I remember this as the race where Danny "I win it all" Summerhill got beaten by Lars Boom in 2016. |

Not expecting a lot of this race actually. I joined it because it was cobbles and had a interesting route. Not perfect for Zepuntke with his hill stat but he should hopefully get something.
(I will be dissapointed if outside top 5, but I can really see that happening)

Vanbilsen with a bad day or too many hills, who can tell. Strava making the race exciting as usual, but Summerhill is really hard to beat. Very nice 2nd for Lagab as well!

Something tells me Shonak will not be unhappy, Strava's racing is lovely!
Congrats to both Kent and Shonak who realistically got twice as much out of this

Gilbert top 10 shows that strategy could've worked.
Great for Summerhill to take this though, because his luck has been appalling, so congrats on that Kent! Lagab 2nd and Strava taking some mass of points pretty big too, so congrats on that Shonak and SN!

Cancellara literally was my worst rider here. This result is absolute bullsh*t for us, and Cancellara will really need to start doing stuff because this is going absolutely nowhere.
Thanks for the report though

Straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaava with one of the biggest Top10 wreckfests I've ever seen. Stunning race. Summerhill though the obvious, but what a race for Africa as well!

Another disappointment from my team. 5 riders from 25th to 35th is still a decent team result but doesn't help at all.
Thanks for the report. |

Azteca and Strava just beasted that race holy moly. Gratz to Kentaurus, Summerhill clearly best today. Lagab with a sneaky second place but when you defeat us here it's well deserved. Baugnies achieved our goal and remaining guys in the top ranks bring us some sweet sweet points. Fucking love cobblez. Thanks for another fine installment jandal in your exquisite cobblez coverage.

YESSSS!!! We got the massive race result we needed. Summerhill shows off his dominance once again, but also getting points from other riders for the first time this season. We really needed a huge race to keep us from dropping this year, and this result might be the answer. Thanks for the much needed report.

Tough race for us but I thought we had a chance to break into the top10.
This was always going to land in Strava or Azteca's laps, so congrats Kentaurus on that elusive victory!
Beautiful report with some nice pics, thanks Cro!
