The profile:
Last two climbs:
In 1959 Giro Hans Junkermann crested Col de la Forclaz in the lead while that was the stage where Gaul destroyed Anquetil on the final climb,Piccolo San Bernardo(Petit-Saint-Bernard)and Gaul won both the stage and the GC.
Col de la Forclaz, the 17th stage, decided the 1963 Tour. The rules in 1963 did not allow cyclists to change bicycles, unless there was a mechanical problem. Anquetil's team director, Raphaël Géminiani, thought that Anquetil could use a different bicycle on the ascent of the Col de la Forclaz, so he advised Anquetil to fake a mechanical problem on the start of that climb; Géminiani cut through a gear cable, and claimed that it snapped. Anquetil could thus use a light bicycle with lower gears, especially suited for a climb, which gave him an advantage on his competitors. Bahamontes reached the top of the Forclaz first, and only Anquetil had been able to follow him. After the top, Anquetil got his regular bicycle back, and rode to the finish together with Bahamontes. Anquetil won the sprint, and the bonus time made him the new leader. As expected, Anquetil won some more time in the time trial in stage 19, and became the winner of the 1963 Tour.
In 1966 Eddy Schutz crested Forclaz in lead and won the stage a second ahead of Poulidor.
In 1969 Pingeon and Merckx escaped on this climb,Pingeon crested the top first and Merckx let Pingeon win the stage.
In 1977 Antonio Menendez crested the climb first but Thurau who was dropped on this climb came back on the descent and won the group sprint.
The only time that featured Finhaut-Emosson was the 7th stage of Criterium du Dauphine where Lieuwe Westra won from the breakaway as he caught and passed the Katusha duo in the last 150 meters while Alberto Contador dropped the injured race leader Chris Froome to take the GC lead. That day Forclaz was featured too and Trofimov crested the top first.
THE FAVOURITES
***** Froome
****Majka,Quintana
***Aru,Mollema,Porte,Zakarin,
**De Gendt,Yates,Rodriguez,Costa,Bardet,Pantano
*Navarro,Valverde,Martin,Meintjes,Pauwels,Nibali,Pozzovivo
Froome is the biggest favourite for the stage win.He has been saying that he will peak for the 3rd week and he wasn't exactly stellar in the first 2 weeks which makes me believe that he is peaking for 3rd week. And with the stage right after a rest day he is my favourite for this.
The breakaway has a very big chance too with Majka,Zakarin,De Gendt,Costa,Pantano,Navarro,Pozzovivo and Pauwels being the prominent names with a chance.Nibali can be a great help for Aru or win the stage from the break if he is on good form but his form sucks. But he will be a little better I think.
Nairo Quintana has to attack if he wants to win this race after coming 2nd twice. The very hard final combo and this being the 17th stage can help him.
Fabio Aru has to attack today if he wants to finishon podium.Same goes for Richie Porte who was one of the strongest on Ventoux.
Bauke Mollema will mostly be defensive given that he sits 2nd overall.Adam Yates is unproven in 3 weeks and sits 3rd overall. So he will be defensive as well.
Joaquin Rodriguez and Romain Bardet have to attack today because they sit 13th and 6th overall respectively.
Alejandro Valverde should be used to crack the Sky train before Quintana if Nairo is on form.
Daniel Martin will be trying to hang on mostly as he is not that good on longer climbs.
Louis Meintjes has been riding greatly so far with coming on the Aru/Yates group on Ventoux. He will be riding defensively though.
Tejay Van Garderen and Roman Kreuziger have been pretty disappointing so far. They will be riding anonymously again. But then again this is the highest level Kreuziger has shown in climbing after his short ban.
PS:This post will be edited. If you want to write a post PM me and I can add it here.

Laporte again today, as with his 2 minute triumph over Sagan and Cavendish on Ventoux.
Looks like a day with an exciting race from the break and should be exciting from the GC riders but instead is controlled by Sky, hopefully Mollema, Porte, Yates, maybe Quintana are feeling good and can at least attack Froome or make it a bit interesting, but I'm doubtful.

Sad that there is so much flat before the final two climbs, this will just help SKY to control the race. |

Waiting for the inevitable news that the final climb can't be ridden but the stage is still really tough.

If Froome wants a final stage win in this tour, this will be his day (which I guess isnt too unlikely).
Otherwise, Majka or Zakarin from the break. This finish is probably the best one for Zakarin the whole tour excluding the Ventoux stage.
Great finishing climbs, but hard to see some really major fights happening in the GC.

To stop Sagan, ASO has new plans for next year. 50 points for win and 1 point for 2nd on flat stages. Medium and High mountain 1 points for win and 10 point for 2nd on flat stages. No intermediate sprint.
ASO are bit ridiculous. Hope they not make more stupid rule changes, but I doubt they will not. They have tried last 3 years to stop him. You have to just have to accept that he is very good. |

You can make a very hard mountain stage with adding Col du Lein and Col des Planches before the final two climbs. It would make the stage something around 240 km long.4 climbs in row with no respite or very little respite.
How?
After coming to Martigny continue to Saxon and climb Col du Lein:
Descent to Sembrancher:
Climb Col des Planches:
Descent to Martigny-Bourg:
EDIT:There is not a flat part of 3.5 km.It is only 600m or so.Because we arrive to Martigny-Bourg and from Avenue du Saint Bernard. Then we just start the Forclaz climb.

What makes him an arsehole Sutty? He's allowed to pull out of the race, it was pretty obvious he wasn't going to Paris so he could get some rest and more track training before the Olympics, I assume you think Rohan Dennis is an arsehole aswell?

Great finishing climbs, but hard to see some really major fights happening in the GC. Froome wins tomorrow. He can also win today, if he wants, but I think he's driving victories defensively home now. |

Isn't that just part of the game? Pro athletes constantly lie to the media

If saying "I'm taking it day by day" is lieing about the possibility of leaving... Every day Cav has said "We'll see how it goes, how i feel." At no point have i seen him say "I'm going to Paris".
If you want to call anyone an asshole, blame British Cycling. Word is they 'forced' Cav out to protect their olympic hopes for him.

Froome allready said, he will ride defensively. He has good time gap to his rivals and still one TT left. If Quintana wants to do something, he needs to deliver it today. |

Expecting some significant gaps between the GC guys today. A big regular climb, followed by a short, fast descent and then a savage end to the last climb with the last few km's often through 10%.
It's going to be hot as well and the final climb is apparently a bit of a heat trap too so that could play a role. Unfortunately for any GC excitement intense heat will probably favour Froome over everyone else but looking forward to it nonetheless. |
