Gent - Wevelgem
The famous GW is another race being downgraded to C1-status after eight years as a PT-race. Previous race-winners are Sam Bewley (2013), Fabian Cancellara (2010) and Tom Boonen (3x), while last year we saw a surprising winner in Ramon Sinkeldam (Project 1t4i).
A flat (rated) northern classic with a rather low amount of cobbled sectors. Always a chance for a sprint of a reduced bunch here, while of course strong roleurs may go for a solo move.
The Startlist
The Favorites Rider | COB | SPR | Rider | COB | SPR | Summerhill | 82 | 70 | Breschel | 77 | 77 | Vanspeybrouck | 82 | 67 | Trentin | 77 | 75 | Baugnies | 80 | 65 | Daniel | 77 | 74 | Boonen | 79 | 81 | Drucker | 77 | 74 | Thomas | 79 | 74 | Steurs | 77 | 65 | Vanmarcke | 79 | 70 | De Vocht | 77 | 64 | Maes | 79 | 62 | Eisel | 76 | 75 | Machado | 79 | 62 | Lagab | 76 | 72 | Albert | 78 | 63 | Joseph | 76 | 66 | Vandenbergh | 78 | 62 | Polanc | 76 | 61 | Stallaert | 77 | 79 | De Backer | 75 | 74 |
As for most of the cobbled PCT-races, there's no way to look past Summerhill and Vanspeybrouck as the clear favorites. Summerhill, who already opened the cobbles-season with a bang in the GP Kigali - to keep on enjoing a great early season after that - is capable of both going solo or winning a bunch sprint.
Of course, this counts for Boonen as well: with three wins here already, he's something like a G-W legend and will be the top-favorite, if it comes down to a sprint from a small leading group. Also Thomas, Stallaert, Breschel or Trentin will hope for such a scenario.
Baugnies, Vanmarcke, Maes, Machado and Vandenbergh as other possible contenders for a prestigious victory.

Once more Summerhill domination I fear.
Vanmarcke the usual top5 cobbled goal. |

Hmm, took a gamble and sent Vantomme here.
Wonder how that pans out, I had a couple of spare racedays for him anyway so this was probably the best option.
Maes, though, should try to avoid a sprint again.

The same guys who were favourites in Dwars Doors should be favourites again. Considering how successful/disappointing it was for us, Boonen has to continue on the high momentum / bounce back.
In Dwars Doors we did everything perfectly / wrong and Boonen got a chance to prove once again how dominant / utter Shit he's in races like this.

I think Drucker should be able to get a top 15 here, though I'm hoping he can sneak a top 10 somehow.
Hopefully Zaffereani can either be some help to him or get into the break, would be nice to see my Sammarinese cobbler in training put in a good performance even if he doesn't end up getting a decent result.

If there's a cobbled race where our good sprint stats have to pay off, it's this one. 74+ SP nearly all across the board has to be worth something at some point.

Had some hard choices to make, so skipped this one in fear of it being more of a sprinter race. Might've been a mistake.

No idea what to expect here - the cobblers to form an elite group, a late jump for a rouleur or a reduced bunch sprint all seem reasonable expectations. The step down from PT might make it ride a bit different as the depth of teams (particualrly on cobbled terrain) is not as strong. Hopefully we have an answer for all options, but our sprinters are weak on cobbles and cobbler has no sprint, so who knows?! A top 10 and mopping up some additional minor points places would be looked upon favourably.
Look forward to the report.

A big chance for us and Summerhill here, but will have to make sure no sprinters can come with him after the last section of cobbles because there are plenty of guys with a good kick in the field.

One top 10, and one top 15 is my goal here. Trentin should be able do good in a sprint, so hopefully a select group of about 10 riders with him there...

Peeters in a sprint maybe, if not, a breakaway
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

De Vocht will need to be on steroids to stay with the front people...although a top 10 is still possible.

What happened there?
Vanmarcke not attacking saving energy for the sprint but then totally collapse?
Nooytens at least somehow saved it, but it`s a very weird result for sure. Some of the better too early in the wind I guess.
Not a very good result for me but at least something. Thanks for the report. Nice to follow. |

I'm not even surprised when this happens now. I am still really bloody pissed off though.

Mixed feelings.
We finally attacked and that's what we should do. Duo attack was pretty awesome to see.
But yes the result was disappointing. Vingerling sprinting is good, but he was obviously tired from his breakaway.

It's difficult to find something to complain about these days. Boonen with another fine result. He missed the win but this second place is still great. For once I disliked his attack early on. Way too early and with his sprint it was unnecessary to try it from far out.
Huge result for cio. After all his complaints lately he gets a 1-3 in a race where his riders where not top favourites.
Bpost gets completely screwed.
