Transfer Season Update #1
First transfers for the upcoming sesason have been made. After a rough start the team building process is well on it's way. Time for a quick update from Züri.
Pirmin Lang and Matteo Montaguti are leaving. We'll miss them and are greatful for what they've done for Team Vontobel!
Both are staying in PCT, our paths will cross more than once the upcoming season.
| Name | Age | OVL | New Team | | Pirmin Lang | 31 | 70,86 | Team Kenya Airways | | Matteo Montaguti | 31 | 72,10 | Eddie Stobart ProCycling |
Last seasons Tachira-winner Jocelin Maillet was our first signing. The pure climber was already on our list last year when we couldn't find an agreement.
| Jocelin Maillet | (27) | Exp: max | OVL: 74,30 | from: Ayubowan! |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 64 | 77 | 70 | 60 | 69 | 76 | 69 | 51 | 55 | 77 | 65 | 65 | 60 |
Pierre Paolo Penasa is a highly gifted stage racer who just needs a little more experience to mess with the best. Some people say he might be a future PT-team leader.
| Pierre Paolo Penasa | (24) | Exp: 4.10 | OVL: 74,55 | from: Free Agency |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 69 | 77 | 72 | 68 | 73 | 71 | 75 | 50 | 57 | 76 | 68 | 64 | 68 | |
Patrick Lane is Vontobel's first non-European signing. The Aussie hazardeur impressed us with the 4th on NC's not long ago.
| Patrick Lane | (24) | Lvl: 4.06 | OVL: 72,30 | from: RBC Pro Cycling |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 68 | 73 | 74 | 63 | 68 | 67 | 71 | 56 | 62 | 71 | 77 | 66 | 63 |
There is not much to say about Cesare Di Maggio. He'll be our undisputed leader, the one to achieve our win goal at Strade Bianche, the guy to save us from relegation.
| Cesare Di Maggio | (27) | Lvl: max | OVL: 77,85 | from: Venchi |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 65 | 65 | 82 | 62 | 73 | 68 | 65 | 51 | 63 | 75 | 67 | 73 | 62 |
The first goals are officially revealed. Vontobel management confirmed this years Strade Bianche as a win goal. Furthermore the team is anticipated to cruise well in the top 20 and avoid relegation.

Great additions.
Di Maggio obviously, but i'm a bit jealous about Penasa actually Didn't fit my plans eventually, but really interesting rider.

Great team indeed. And I am pretty sure you can already add some more to the list. Must say, I was very close to make a late bid on this rider.
@tsmoha: The use of your words is truly special. I guess a surely at the end could come in well

Thanks a lot to all of you!
@tsmoha: Your bid already made me frightened. Suffer a little the PT-team-effect to get frantic when the guys with the big money appear.
@roturn: Glad you didn't make the late bid.
Happy I can finally add Grand to my team, was nice dealing with Aegon.
There were some and will eventually be more signings today. I'll sum these up soon.
@knockout: Likewise, LLS will score big time.

Great additions really, i hope we can talk about Penasa somewhere in the future.
Good luck with Di Maggio, who finally has wage to match his skills.

Yes Di Maggio is a bit of a Man Game legend, a lot like Alarcon. Insane points scorer at Continental level and I think this year will be no exception despite the constant 'coz of Di Maggio guy' OVL AVE tinkering
I do think he is no longer the great season gaurentee of previous years though. Still a great asset for any PCT team.
Decent climbers but could be difficult for both to excel in the ever stronger climbing pool in PCT.

@Avin: Thanks. Penasa is the kind of guy I love to talk about. He's the key puzzle piece in our five year plan to pro tour domination.
@Smowz: Can't whine about the OVL tinkering, yet. His high wage might have been the reason Di Maggio was available... btw. it could have easily been Cancellara instead of Di Maggio.
We are new to the climbing thing (our best in 2014 had MO:72). So Maillet and Penasa are first steps in that regard. Dario Cataldo will also join the team, but nonetheless you're right: we can't expect to find many ranking points on mountaintops.

Transfer Season Update #2
It's time confirm a second wave of signings. Among others a well known stage racer is joining Vontobel. Team is taking shape, time will show if it'll be good enough to stay in the Pro Continental Tour.
Arnaud Grand is one of the few available Swiss talents this transfer season. As a junior he was compared to Fabian Cancellara quite often, but couldn't match the high expectations. Nonetheless the scouting reports are pointing to a steady development.
| Arnaud Grand | (24) | Exp: 3.19 | OVL: 69,01 | from: Aegon - Lavazza |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 68 | 58 | 64 | 63 | 70 | 67 | 66 | 72 | 61 | 64 | 63 | 59 | 67 |
Our stage race leader will be Dario Cataldo. He have already proved he can compete on PCT level. We count on him to be a reliable scorer and mentor to still developing talent Pierre Paolo Penasa.
| Dario Cataldo | (30) | Exp: max | OVL: 75,63 | from: Free Agency |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 71 | 78 | 75 | 69 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 51 | 60 | 73 | 74 | 65 | 69 |
Romain Guillmois was one of the promising riders we planned to aquire last season. Through unfortunate circumstances he had to join the struggling Maloja Mountain squad. Now he is looking for his last chance in professional cycling.
| Romain Guillemois | (24) | Lvl: 1.89 | OVL: 66,09 | from: Free Agency |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 65 | 57 | 62 | 56 | 65 | 64 | 61 | 59 | 70 | 72 | 52 | 74 | 56 |
On a sidenote Vontobel management confirmed that the team will try to repeat last years success at Seskin Classic. It is affirmed that at least a top 5 is expected there. In particular because Vontobel couldn't make the trip to the second Irish race (FBD Eire Tour) due to time constraints.

Nice squad you've assembled here! I would've liked to have Cataldo too, but found a replacement for him. He might not be an 80Mo climber, but his hill stat will put him ahead of guys like Eastman on the right parcours. Relegation really won't be an issue for you.

Thanks aidan, hope you're right. I'm a little uneasy, have seen so many great stage racer rigned by PCT-teams.

Two riders I have liked in my squad...Grand and Cataldo.
But sometimes you can`t always have all your wishes to come true. Quite happy that they are in your team now. |

Transfer Season Update #3
The last signatures are made. 21 riders will join Team Vontobel in it's first PCT-Tour season.
A sprinter for certain terrains and a well-hunted Swiss talent are the final additions.
In Oscar Gatto we found a real Geschke-kind-of-guy. The veteran will be our upgrade to Pirmin Lang in the hilly sprint department and is able to manage cobbles, too.
| Oscar Gatto | (30) | Exp: max | OVL: 73,16 | from: Free Agency |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 71 | 66 | 74 | 61 | 71 | 64 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 72 | 56 | 64 | 67 |
The signature of Julien Taramarcaz concludes our transfer phase. Julien was the only Swiss non-pro who's improvement last year convinced us to contract him.
| Julien Taramarcaz | (28) | Exp: max | OVL: 71,65 | from: Free Agency |
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FI | DH | PRL | 73 | 59 | 65 | 70 | 72 | 71 | 69 | 73 | 72 | 73 | 73 | 72 | 71 |
One thing our sponsor was disappointed about was the lack of climbing talent in our squad. To prove our progress in this area we agreed to win the KOM-jersey at Tour de Romandie.
No doubt there is another important race in Switzerland to consider. The efforts to obtain a wildcard for Tour de Swiss have already started.

Nice work Margh, you've made a good team between Di Maggio and Cataldo. Arnaud Grand is a great talent to have as well!

Always funny to see all those Conti teams having much more climbing depth than Oz. No news really, but still
Lovely rebuild indeed. Will follow with interest!
