In 2014 the second edition of the Belgian-French one-day-race Wanze-Arenberg takes place. Last year's winner Eisel is also present this year and looking to defend his title.
The profile does not include any difficult ascents, as is likely in the region. Nevertheless, the race has been given a very difficult profile due to the addition of 20kms of cobblestones.
The favourites for these race can be distincted in sprinters and pure cobblers. Last year a mass sprint occurred with a 1-2 for AMEXpc, but will they do that again? They did bring their two riders for that Breschel and Eisel, so maybe we'll see the same performance again this year. Last year's third Veelers is present as well. There are other riders who could get a victory in a sprint as well, such as Thomas, Nepomnyachsniy, Steegmans and Turgot.
However, there might be a situation where the race is torn apart and a real cobble specialist wins. In this case Quickstep's duo Baugnies/Steurs may turn out to be the strongest, as they are backed up with a strong team as well. Franzoi is another favourite. His block may not be as strong as Quickstep's, but he'll try to make that up on his own. Maes, Nuyens, Taillefour and Langeveld, Machado should also be able to try and get a victory.

Huge, potentialy season defining race for B3B. The final cobbled classic and it suits Thomas about as well as any. A Podium here keeps our survival fight well in our hands. A Top10 is a minimum must or we'll start saying good by. Hoping Grashev can hang onto score some nice points as well. We're on a good run in the USA and in the UK, let's take it the France!
No rousing speeches just yet either...

This team is so good, we should be able to get a top 100 on a good Day.

Hope our Belgian duo ends the cobble season in style. The terrain and nationality of the race are perfect for them.

Well, really just an HC Band filler for us. We'll relegate anyway, so don't really care what happens here

Bernhard Eisel and Matti Breschel finished 1-2 last year and we have high expectation that both will be in the mix at the end of this seasons race. Kurth, and Bush are top support riders.
We need one last big race!

Expect crazy TMM in next few seconds..
Bit of a weird race, especially after the crucial split..Baugnies did good though, I'll take 2nd and 6th, goal accomplished, 75/100 for the season with set of hardest goals possible, not too bad!
Cheers Selwink! Very detailed report!

While I'm happy B3B won... I'm also sad, since this pretty much confirms we won't be passing them, unless Cabrera wins the races he still has to race. |

Thomas saving TMM's after ToA's ranking points congrats!
Had hoped for more than 21st, but couldn't really expect huge things from our guys. A lucky result could have brought Oz some nice points against Venchi or those other teams.
TThanks for an entertaining, detailed report, Sel! Good work once again.

Yes Thomas!!! Great win. Congrats TMM, it's really nice to see G finally strike a big win.
Unfortunate that Hornbach have probably scored a lot though, as they will have been the main target and are of course inactive.

That is more like it! Fantastic result for Thomas. Thought he made too much of an effort too soon, but he just kept on attacking and he came through.
Can Boeing-Bulgaria Bicycling pull off a great escape to avoid the drop?

F*CKING HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!! I saw him attacking with so far to go and was practically screaming profanity about such a dumb move. Then it slowly came together as the peloton split and stopped. Wasn't anywhere near feeling comfortable until the 1km screenshot. I do have one complaint and it's my usual levelled at the cobbles team, we need to get a second man into scoring position to really capitalise, luckily Hristov improves so next season should be better.
We started the cobbled classics season with Bahir Dar and 2nd place for Grashev. We can close the cobbled classics season with victory in Arenberg, something i honestly wasn't expecting. Late and Early cobbles seem to do us best, we had a similar pattern last season.
Big points score at just the right moment. Stringing the results together through September. Ok ToA could have been better but not much realistically. We are going to bring the fight all the way if we have to. My misplaced over the top optimism can't be stopped now!
And i decided not to spam the bananas even though i might have burst a blood vessel holding my hand off the keyboard

Congrats to Thomas, he has been close many times in the past couple of years. He earned that one Well Done. G
AMEX's lack of depth hurt as once Eisel was dropped in the split we did not have the legs to ride him back.
Fun race to read about. We picked up over 100 points so we cannot complain as we had four riders scoe points.
