It`s not the official National Road Championship, but as the road criterium belongs to the Australian Nationals, it should be posted here I guess.
Steele Von Hoff won the direct sprint duel against Caleb Ewan to take the Criterium. Both probably should be considered good bets for the real Road Race even though the course and competition will be more difficult.

So far it wasn`t against biggest competition though. He used to win those Crits in previous years as well. Unfortunately he is probably not in the squad for the Tour Down Under. So might still take a bit longer to see him in a sprinter field against some of the best.
This btw. is an awesome bike frame ridden by Jessie MacLean in the Women Crit Race. Definitely won`t have an engine in it.
Love this shot of the Crit Race. Would love to see those slowmotion shots in lots more races.

No surprise Von Hoff won the crit, he has been working hard over the last month for the Nationals aiming to get a berth on the Uni-SA squad for the TDU. I think you will see Caleb Ewan riding for OGE at the TDU providing he comes through the RR on Sunday without any issues, OGE don't really have another sprinter ready to go outside of Howard so I expect Ewan to get a ride.
One thing on the rest of the National to take note, tomorrow for the TT's we have Heavy storms and high humidity predicted and for the rest of the champs including the Mens RR on Sunday we have significant rain predicted. Might make things interesting

GreenEDGE boss Shayne Bannan is clearly excited by his potential but careful not to put him under too much pressure too soon.
"He is competitive enough, so we want to take pressure away, not add to it," Bannan said.
He will miss the Tour Down Under but ride Cadel Evans' farewell race and the Herald Sun Tour next month before embarking on a carefully planned international campaign that will include a number of stage races, starting with the Tour of Catalunya in Spain in March.
These are good races in which he can be competitive while still learning what it takes to challenge the best riders and teams. "His first year will be all about learning," Bannan said.
Sounds more like he won`t. Except for a spontaneous change after his performances so far. But they still have Docker, Howard. |

Ah I missed that! Fair enough then that does make sense, think I got my wires crossed as I think he is riding the Sun Tour. Cheers for that

Love the look of the NZ RR, everyone except Jack Bauer is here, but nobody decent is at the ITT? Some free agent or Avanti rider will show it off, instead of Sergent, Bauer or Bewley?

There is some quality in there just not WT level, one of the Avanti boys will win the ITT in Joe Cooper, Taylor Gunman (last years winner) or Sam Horgan. Avanti ex Genesys are now a NZ registered Pro-Continental squad so will be aiming for both this and the RR.

Well with the track record of that squad producing WT riders one of them might indeed be WT level

Looking forward to what Bevin will do. He once beat Cooper in a TT last year, so maybe this time again
Also impressed by Scott Sunderland in the Crit Race. Budget will be an interesting team, if Sunderland and Luke Davison manage to deliver on the road..

I made a pcm career recently made of the best young kiwi continental riders. Got them to WT, I still only have the best kiwis and Aussies, have both the U-23 World champs, the World ITT champ and we are the World TTT champ, our best hill is 81 and best MO is 78, and only 23

Should be a close battle between Cooper and Bevin but I have my PCM's on Cooper bagging it, I think Bevin could be a good chance of taking the RR.
Sunderland and Davison will be interesting to watch in the upcoming NRS season, I know track commitments will come 1st but Davison has proven he can mix both quite well.

Put my PCM$ on gunmann, I just have a funny feeling He'll outdo both...

@ New Zealand TT conversation I can't be bothered quoting
You said that Sergent Bauer and Bewley not being there was interesting, was there some reason that Henderson was skipped?
@Australian Nats
I was going to go to the race, because I live kind of near (with 100km) but the weather is against me.

Henderson is a sprinter not a TT rider.
And Roulston is out of the NZ RR Championships after winning the past 2 years despite the fact that it is in his hometown for the last time. He is instead preparing for the Tour Down Under.
And Jack Bauer, it seems, has also pulled out of the RR. No real reason it seems. Just says, elected not to enter.

What a race that was, Dennis lead at first point but Porte really dig deep on the climbing part of the course and is the new Aussie TT champion, ahead of Dennis and Bobridge, 8 seconds separating Porte and Dennis at the end.
The climbing nature of course didn't really suit Oricas but still that was rather poor effort. 4th for Luke, 5th for Howson and 7th for Hepburn.
Bobridge delivered as to reports he was going strong. Only 20seconds behind Dennis and we could assume Dennis is a stronger climber so course suited quite more, these two will be insanely close to each other in the Hour Record.
