Tour of Eritrea
The Continental Tour is heading for Eritrea, where the second edition of the countries very own stage-race is soon to be held. The locals eagerly await a peloton packed with some of the division's best climbers.
But also the sprinters and puncheurs may have chances to shine: two flat stages and the concluding, rather "easy" hilly stage most probably won't be much of a factor for the GC though. On second day, the riders will face the queen stage, featuring a not too steep (11% max) but very long summit finish. Here's where the GC could be decided, even though the final stage may offer a chance as well (especially with close gaps in the GC).
Who wil follow on Gomez Marchante, who won this race last year for ING? Will Marquez (2nd) or Nazaret (3rd) finally claim the victory, which they did miss so close last season? And how will local team Jaguar do? Their captain Berhane had some strong showings in his most recent races.
The Startlist
GC-contenders and Stage-hunters
GC-contenders | | | Sprinters | | | Rider | MO | HI | Rider | SP | ACC | Intxausti | 82 | 71 | Greipel | 80 | 78 | Kiserlovski | 80 | 75 | Bennett | 79 | 79 | Eastman | 80 | 71 | Aberasturi | 79 | 78 | Nazaret | 80 | 71 | Vanderaerden | 79 | 75 | Marquez | 80 | 71 | Davis | 79 | 77 | Samwel | 79 | 70 | Sonnery | 78 | 73 | Berhane | 78 | 75 | Abdallah | 78 | 76 | Nerz | 78 | 72 | Brea | 78 | 76 | Serpa | 78 | 69 | Giaux | 77 | 75 | Stetina | 78 | 67 | Ferrari | 77 | 80 | Augustyn | 77 | 75 | Coquard | 76 | 79 | Schwab | 77 | 72 | | | | Efimkin | 77 | 72 | Puncheurs | | | Maillet | 77 | 70 | Rider | MO | HI | Ndbri | 77 | 69 | Hategeka | 72 | 77 | De la Fuente | 76 | 75 | Kelderman | 70 | 77 | Gerdemann | 76 | 76 | | | | Gadret | 76 | 72 | | | | Elissonde | 76 | 72 | | | | Torres | 76 | 62 | | | | Heider | 76 | 72 | | | |
You don't need to know the latest results to realize, that Intxausti is the man to beat here. The Spaniard had an impressive Sibiu Tour last month and here's another chance to win a stage-race.
The competition is fierce though: Nazaret, Marquez, Eastman and Kiserlovski are capable of climbing the summit finish the best. Kiserlovski may even have an eye on that concluding hilly stage.
The African cycling fans will hope for Berhane, Samwel or Augustyn to shine. All of them should be well in the mix for the Top-10 at least. Just like a few others like Nerz, Efimkin, Maillet, Gerdemann, Schwab or pure climbers like Serpa or Stetina.
As for the sprints, Greipel looks like the best bet (with a decent train and great leadout as his support). Bennett, Aberasturi, Davis or Vanderaerden ain't much slower though. It should be close bunch sprints anyway.

Go Greipel! Konovalovas and Cardoso should be all you need here... Kono may even ride a decent GC if the mountain stage doesný provide gaps, and otherwise Efimkin has shown he likes to attack, and should have a shot at the top 10...
Edit: Bah, just forgot Vaitkus isn't here... Should've made things a lot easier...

The climb itself is perfect for Marquez, it doesn't look to have great steep sections so big gaps might not be possible and with best acceleration of out any contenders Marquez should continue his consistent run of results. However one day will decide the whole GC outcome and bit will depend on luck and daily form!

3 in the top 20 and 2 top 10s from Sonnery would make this a success. I expect disappointment though |

I need a really good race. Augustyn is there for a good position overall, maybe Abdallah can sprint to a podium and Hategeka is there for the final stage. Come on boys.

Well, he's a climber. Always trying to include as many teams as possible, too

I know.
But still, I don't believe he'll do anything base on his results this season, he'll be crap, and finish around 40th to 60th. |

Gone is the possibility of a good result in this race... Gerdemann should not go beyond the top20, davis still have to try to repeat the victory of last year.

The podium might be possible but with a top 5 our objective for this race is achieved. I see Marquez on form to take this one.
PS: We could build a half pipe with the 2nd and 3rd stage

Strong stratlist, i am glad Metinvest is not competing here. I predict failure of some climbers, there are too many of decent ones here and the mountain stage does not look so much selective from the profile.

Uhhh interesting development with Bacardi already in yellow. Wonder how that will affect tomorrow.
Marquez best GC contender today, good work.

Why do I never deserve to win anymore? So close every single time, but yet my last stage win was in May this year (actual timing)... I want a new Twitter header photo thingy...

I'm very happy with the stage win, but i do hope it doesn't affect Intxausti's performance tommorow.

Just noticed that i forgot to include Cabreja in the preview. Still a nice result for him, isn't it?

It is a pity that the Mobil train has struggled in the end because Davis could have reached the podium. Still it was a good result...

Marquez really a weirdo this season. So much consistency in his races taking a win here and there and always in the GC fight. Nice win.
Also nice to see Nerz doing well here.
Bad luck for Bennett and the home team. Had not expected to see anyone OTL on this stage to be honest. |

Congrats Alak! Nice move there. Repsol doing well again, but guess no need to say gratz here
Bennett, yes. A pity. Didn't notice any crash. Maybe he punctured in the worst moment and stupidly sat up then. Or a hidden injury thing. Sorry for the lack of infos. Maybe i fell into a short sleep when nothing happened there on the climb until the late action

this is not the outcome i was expecting, Gerdemann lost too much time today and now the best we can achieve is the top 20. Lets see if Davids can obtain a good result on the next stage.
Once again congrats to Alakagom, Marquez has been outstanding this season
