Weird climbing situation
MartijnVDD
I'm playing as Bardiani at the 19th stage in the 2013 Giro. At the start, I have Pirazzi at the front of the pack because he's wearing the climber's jersey.

As soon as we hit the first mountain, which is quite early, I try to keep him at the front in order to gain some more mountain points, but whatever I try, he keeps dropping back.
At some point, I had him on dot with 84 effort and he gets passed by the entire pack including teammates who are worse at climbing and have worse fitness while maintaining position at 70 effort.
By the way, Pirazzi has Excellent in all fields that concern fitness, positive daily form (because of recognoitring training camp) and didn't waste much energy in the last four days (including one rest day and a TT).
Also, if I relay to keep him at the front, my red bar vanishes in no time, while Nibali (pink jersey) manages to keep his entire team at the front, including <60MO guys...

Why is this?

Have you tried playing the stage again? Does it keep happening? What's his MO stat?

Have you tried keeping him at the front with relay, dot and/or stay in position?

MartijnVDD
It happens every single time, no matter the situation.

If I dot at 80 effort, I end up in the last group 6' behind front rider Cunego (same MO as Pirazzi) after only 15kms or so, without yellow bar while there isn't even a single sign of tiredness in the front group.

I also tried attacking. Even when I attack from the start, empty my red bar to gain a lead of more than 2' before the start of the climb and dot at 80, I get caught by the pack in no time.
When following an attack, I run out of red bar after 2kms of climbing while other riders with less MO ride away from me.

Some more info:
Pirazzi has 74MO. When on dot/maintain position at 80, he gets passed by Zardini (68MO) who is maintaining position at 70 effort.
Difficulty is hard.

Has he crashed recently in any stages. That can cause this type of thing.

First: When using the relay command, your rider will always make the maximum possible effort to get to the front of the pack regardless of what number you put him on.

Second: I remember somewhere that breakaways are scripted, so the pack will pace insane to get you back? (Not sure...what are the heartrates of the people in the peloton?)

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!

I don't think he's crashed in earlier stages or at least don't remember it. If he would have and it's affecting his form, shouldn't it show in one of the fitness parameters?

The problem is that riders with less than 60MO manage to stay at the front while my rider (only one rider) either tires out really fast or just drops back. So if the problem is that the peloton is riding too hard, it should affect all riders and especially the riders with low MO. The other heart rates on my team are all yellow by the way.

Here are some pictures to illustrate the problem:

As you can see, my fitness is perfect.

Pirazzi starts at the front, so he doesn't have to waste energy getting there.

As soon as we hit the climb, the 70 starts to blink, so I put his effort to 80 and dot. Meanwhile, Zardini (6MO less than Pirazzi) passes him by while maintaining position at 70 effort. His heartbeat is lower and he's wasting less yellow energy.

Bongiorno (2MO less) passes Pirazzi same way as Zardini did, only without wasting yellow energy at all. Also, Pirazzi wasn't getting blocked. (He was going backwards anyway...)

At the top of the climb, Pirazzi is in A11 without any yellow or red energy left, his daily form is great though. Zardini is in A7 with still more than half of his yellow bar, regardless of his shitty form. Bongiorno hasn't wasted energy at all and is in A3.

Both Zardini and Bongiorno just maintained position at 70 effort, so you'd think that's the way to go, right?

Nope. After restarting the race to apply my newly acquired tactics, this is the result. Pirazzi, with great daily form again, lost 3'34 to Zardini while also wasting half his yellow bar by only maintaining position at 70 effort.

Don't even get me started on attacking...

I think the most likely is that he is indeed injured, since the other riders on your team are going easy and only him is hurting. It wouldn't appear in his fitness parameters; unfortunately these kind of injuries (when the rider is injured but keeps racing) do not seem to appear anywhere in current PCMs (there was a small red cross that would appear several PCMs ago). The only way to be sure of it is checking in the savegame: open it with an editor, table DYN_cyclist, find Pirazzi. Check his value on column fitness_i_handicap. If it's something else than 0, than indeed he's racing injured. You can check in table STA_handicap to see how serious the injury is (how much % of his stats he is actually riding with and how long will it take to recover).

Thanks Luigi.
Turns out he is injured and riding with 80% of his MO. 80% of 74 is 59,2. Two other riders on my team turn out to be injured as well.

I also think I know how it happened.
I always simulate TTs because I don't like racing them. The previous stage was a MTT and apparently, Pirazzi finished almost last. I didn't see this because I didn't care much about the results.

Shame on Cyanide for not showing important information like these injuries anywhere. Though, when a fall happens, the info in the top left corner of the screen usually says something about "looking slightly injured" etc., but that's not enough, imo.

I'll either have to restart from the latest weekly save before the MTT or just forget about the blue jersey and keep playing.

EDIT: After simulating the last two mountain stages, the results were so ridiculously weird, I'll just restart from the last rest day.

Anyway, the mystery is solved.

If you don't want him to be injured, rather than restart with a weekly save you could just change his fitness_i_handicap value to 0 Pfft

How can we know if riders is injured? Check in editor?

Yeah of course, but it's okay for me as long as it's part of the game. That's why I decided to play on, but my mistake was to simulate the stages because there wasn't anything to gain for me anyway.
Marcato won a MTF stage 6' from a small group 6' ahead of the pack, to give an example.
