Some of you may remember the poll I did a while back, looking for suggestions for a short story challenge which I wished to undertake.
Well the winner of that poll & the challenge which you PCMdaily members wanted to see was that of the young Polish upstart Michal Kwiatkowski.
So here it is, I hope you enjoy it!
MICHAL KWIATKOWSKI: REALISING THE POTENTIAL
By Owen10ozzy
PCM 2013 PATCH 1.0.3.0
DB: Edited PCMdailyRealNameDB
Difficulty: Hard
Potential, a latent excellence or ability which may or may not be developed. It is something which many sports stars have, some will go on to realise it....others will not, simply falling by the way side. Michal Kwiatkowski is someone with bags of potential, now it's time to find out just what he can do with it.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CHALLENGE:
Win both the Giro D’Italia & Tour De France Young Riders Classification
Place TOP 20 in a Grand Tour in Year 1 & TOP 5 in a Grand Tour in Year 2
Win 3 monuments
Place top 10 in either the ITT World Championship or World Championship

Michal Kwiatkowski
Michal Kwiatkowski is a young up and coming Polish rider who is an all-rounder. With decent sprinting abilities and strong climbing abilities to match his impressive TT’ing he is quickly impressing many on the pro-tour circuit. Having been a double European Champion (road race 2007, time trial 2008) he became the national road champion in the under 23-catergory in 2009.
Turning professional in 2010 he signed with Caja Rural before joining Team RadioShack in 2011. Impressive form saw him take 3rd overall in the Driedaagse vas West-Vlaanderen, the Three Days of De Panne and the Tour du Poitou-Charentes.
He found himself on the move again in 2012, joining ranks with Omega Pharma-Quick Step. Victory in the prologue of Driedaagse vas West-Vlaanderen and 2nd place overall in his home race, the Tour de Pologne has shown everyone just what he is capable of. As he enters his 4th year amongst the pro’s he will be looking to step it up and show everyone just how big his potential really is.

With the season underway it’s time to decide the objectives for the first season of this challenge. Since all of the focus is on achieving the goals set out I have decided that my race participation will be minimal. I will focus on only 4 races this year (3 classics & 1 Grand Tour).
If I feel like I need an extra race here or there then I shall ride as a domestique in a small race to maintain fitness and vital preparation.
This year my focus will be on the Tour De France, as well as the following classics:
Ronde Van Vlaanderen
Liege-Bastogne-Liege
Il Lombardia
I will attend the pre-season training camp in Mallorca before undertaking a 7 day training camp in Belgium at the beginning of March in preparation for the Classics.

@Ian Butler - Yes it is & thanks very much. This is my first real rider based challenge so i'm intrigued to see how it plays out. Also gives me something to work on whilst I await final patch and expansion pack etc to begin my other 'fantasy rider' story properly. |

Interesting, I hope you are able to let him reach the allrounder potential he has. He might be entitled to a higher sprint stat? I will be following this
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Yep good luck its a great idea to set challenges like this. ![Wink](../images/smiley/wink.gif)
I see the thread is entitled (a shortish story) I hope that isn't in relation to most stories on this website, as most stories here don't make it past the end of January. ![Pfft](../images/smiley/pfft.gif) |

Definitely will follow...Kwiatek is a great choice for a story, though I haven't looked at his potentials.

@Ollfardh - I have edited his potential to 7, so the hope is his stats to do increase more so than usual.
@admirschleck - Thanks Alot
@The Rider - Whilst I may have been awol up until now on this story rest assured it is going ahead. I am currently playing the game and writing reports, once I have enough written where I feel confident I can begin to post and continue to play all at a decent pace my reports will begin
@sutty68 - Cheers Pal
@the_hoyle - Hope I can keep you following throughout.
@547984 - I really like him as a cyclist and he has a great future ahead, I haven't seen a story done about him before which also helps.
Reports will begin within the next few days for those following. Apologies for keeping you waiting...hoping it will be worth it!

Sounds a cool idea!
Kwiat will be totally tired in September-October though, you might want to take a look at that

@Jesleyh - I am hoping it works out as good as I am expecting. Yeh I had a play around with the schedule as much as I could and thats the best I could get it. Surprising given he isn't really in that many races. 3 plus a grand tour and WC.
@baia - Cheers for the good wishes. He has really grown on me over the past 12 months. Hopefully he can really push on IRL over the coming seasons.
So here we go, the first challenge in Michal’s journey to fulfilling his potential. It’s the 2nd monument of the season, the famous Tour of Flanders.
The team arrive in some great form. Boonen has already picked up 3 race wins this season and Chavanel has shown form with 2 Top 3 General Classifications, as well as 4 race podium places. Obviously the aim here for the team is to help Michal to a first monument victory so they will be riding for him. Without the sprinting ability to match the likes of Boonen and Sagan, Kwiatkowski will require something of a perfect tactical race to stand a chance.
Couple of teams try an early breakaway but are immediately shut down by our Quickstep train, phase 1 of the plan do not allow any early breakaways!
45 kms in and a breakaway forms, having rode out the early attempts we allow this one to go, attempting to ensure we don’t get relied upon to reel them in all day. They quickly build up a 3:12 lead.
Group containing Vaitkus, Ista, Van Melsen, Boeckmans, Boucher & Hunter.
With no one team willing to set the pace at the front the breakaway which has now extended to ten build their lead to over 6 mins. It’s clear that we will have to begin bridging the gap.
At the 106km the peloton is caught, the rain has set in and conditions are difficult. We lead from the front.
K Peeters of (CRE) makes a brave attack, he builds a lead of just over 2mins before we set a steady pace to keep him within sight.
We reel in the sole breakaway at the 74 km mark, and jump straight to the front to set the pace and begin to put our plan into place.
As soon as we hit the front we up the tempo and it’s time to strike, Chavanel,Boonen,Kwiatkowsi & Stybar are sent on the attack. They catch the pelton sleeping and quickly open up a gap.
First signs are it’s worked…just 26 kms later they have completely burst open the peleton and have dropped a group containing Sagan by over 6 minutes…Cancellera though spotted the move earlier and is just 2.15 seconds out.
As the team hits the 20km mark they still lead, though Cancelera and Gatto are chasing and now lie just 1.03 seconds down the road.
Boonen & Chavanel have plenty left in the tank and Boonen wants to be left to attack but the orders are to keep Kwiatowski in the hunt….it’s going to be tough…
AND HE HAS DONE IT…the team deliver Kwiatkowski to the finish line. The tactics shown took everyone by surprise and left them with too much work to do.

@ste_18, NTTHRASH, baseballlover, Jesley H - It was a very weird result and one I haven't seen before. However rest assured results to come are nothing like that. I do honestly think that it was just a case of no team seeing my tactics coming....as in the race report no one took up the pace at the front and my sudden appearance and introduction of a very quick pace seemed to blow the field apart.
Call it a freak result or just great tactics..i'll take it as it puts me one step closer to completing my challenge!
