Does the protect feature have any effect if the protected rider is already riding behind others or mixed into the peloton? |

Yes, on cobblestones for example. |

So, always protect riders through cobbled sections? |

Yes, definitely want to protect your leader(s) on cobbled sections. |

Best that you do. You can see the effect by looking at their heartbeat monitor |

Ahh, OK. I'll test that out. |

So, does the same theory (reducing heart rate) hold true for steep climbs? |

I believe so. Protection is always useful, but especially when there's a lot of wind and on cobblestones |

Yes, it does, but you have to expect a higher heart rate than usual on flat roads... So if you're protected on flat roads, the heart rate can be for example 152, but on a steep climb it will then be for example 165...

Protecting works on all terrains, no matter where you are in the group afaik (quite senseless, but yeah). Basically what happens is the protector will have a bigger heart rate and the protected rider will have a lower one.

Regarding the wind, does protection have any effect if the rider is already surrounded by others while riding in the peloton? |

Does having 2 riders doing the protecting double the protection effect, or does it just spread the effort (and related energy decline) from 1 protector to 2? |

You can't protect with 2 riders at the same time. |

You can't have 2 riders protecting the same one. Unless you're talking about the water bug, in which case it's just a bug and doesn't have any effect.

Actually, you can. It's kind of pointless though, as the protection effect wont change.
If you send back the protecting rider to get bottles, you can take a new rider and protect the same rider. Then when the first rider returns, he'll continue protecting - together with the other guy.

I was.
Now that I know it does nothing, I won't bother with it anymore.
Thanks! |
