i would like to change the jersey i selected at the start of a career mode. despite searching for about an hour on all the "custom jersey" tutorials i cannot find a simple description of how to alter this parameter. thanks in advance and in anticipation:

what might be posible is you into the program files go to 3D then cycist then cloth if you picked a custom team jersey then you go into the c0 files and you find that jersey and put and replace it with a new jersey

1. Open your savegame (located in My Docs/PCM12/Users/username/Database/Solo/DB of career) with an editor, look for table DYN_sponsor.
2. Look for your sponsor's line and the value in jersey_sz_abbreviation (since you created a custom team, it'll be something like cXX, where XX is a number).
3. You shirt is located in Program Files/Cyanide/PCM12/3D/Cyclists/Cloth/Team/[jersey_sz_abbreviation]. Just replace the file called "cXX_maillot" by the shirt you want

Just to be clear, you don't need to edit anything, the editor would only be to see which shirt have you chosen. If you remember "I chose the first one", then you can already go and change the shirt in folder c00. Another way would be to open the shirt from each cXX folder and look if that's your current shirt. But from these 3 methods I find opening the save with an editor the easiest
