how to beat gilbert in classics like amstil gold race? he has evans for chasing the breakway and when he attacks, everyone can hardly close the cap any ideas?

But seriously, Gilbert is a total machine in those races. The Swiss Machine could probably beat him, and I'm sure if your playing as Sky you can somehow mess the race up enough to get a win for whoever you want.
Dont forget his one of his teams main riders, so he probably has a fully fit team and he will be peak fitness himself for those races, so you'll need to make sure you are too.

How exactly would you "mess the race up" with a strong team to be favored from it?

Well you can probably do it with alot of the top teams, Sky just generally has the best squad. Whatever the race, if you pick you perfect team and get them fit for an event, you can win it no matter rivals.
In this example, Gilbert i imagine is winning due to killing everyone in a solo break in the hills towards the end of the race. If thats the case, you jsut pick a team with a ton of hills engines (and Sky I know have loads of those) and you just have them hit the front when Gilbert tries to break. Or better, a little while before he usually breaks, and stop him being able to get any advantage. A well build Sky train will run a race from half way if you want. Just stick Cav at the end, hit a high tempo with 40-45% of the race left and do the Cav thing at the end. Pretty sure most those classics can be finished with a sprint. If its a hill finish, then you just take wiggins and dot him up the last hill when gilbert tries to attack. Wiggins is only just lower then Gilbert on hills and his TT skills make up for that on sub 5% gradient finishes.
Thats what i mean by mess up a race with sky. You can run whatever race you want to run with them and basically forget the rest of the riders because it doesnt matter what they do. Its not a race, more a procession until your inevitable victory. The races that happen irl that people moan about because they are "boring".
