PCM 11 questions from a noob to cycling sims
scottj63
Hey all,

Great community here. Glad to be a part of it. I work in Afghanistan (American) and I saw this game when I was in Dubai and it was very cheap so I decided to buy it as I love management sims. The problem is that i know nothing about bicycle racing other than Greg Lemond and Lance "I may or may not have done drugs" Armstrong were big in it and they were Americans.

Knowing nothing about racing, I created the best rider ever (my name of course) and put him on the only team I had heard of Radioshack. Did the Tour of Australia. Obviously I don't know how to manage a rider (laughing) My superhero rider finished the Tour in 27th. He won the Sprint and Mountain and Overall Points easily. What I see is if you breakaway alone you are bound to fail. But because I dont know biking team strategy, I got what I deserved. On a good note, one of my riders (Hermans) won the "Best Young Rider" award and finished 3rd in the Tour. Don't ask me how though as I probably had nothing to do with it. I used the "get in line and rotate the lead" strategy set at 70.

A couple questions. First, when is a good distance to try to break away, and yet still have something left for the finish if the peloton catches you? Secondly, I don't understand what "protecting a rider" does. Can I get a quick explanation on that?

Off to the Paris-Nice tour. Hopefully the team will do better than 5th this time.

1. Do not break when no one is breaking. Catch the attaking riders when they are breaking. Do not aatck in the near to the finish-(attack if you want) because the peloton increasing speed for sprint.

thank you for the reply Emre99.

So if i see an attack, to catch them I attack also and then stop the attack when I am with the leaders? Or is that what the counter-attack button is for? Near the finish do not attack? How will I keep up with the sprinters if I don't attack?

I also learned something else. Using the "short relay" strategy for my whole team set at 80 my team did a breakaway on their own. Their yellow bars all died though, so I see I will pay for this later in the race. I am glad I found out that the leaders dont have to go waterless for the whole race waiting for someone to go get them water.

1. When you are with leaders , stop the attack because of your red bar. When the breakaway does not relay , you can attack 1-2 times for increasing speed of the breakaway.
2. If you need more information about 'How to sprint well?'' I can tell you more information about it.
3. I said do not attack when you are near the finish (15-5kms) but you can attack with a good stat man ( what is terrain like : MO -FL -HIL).

Once again thank you for the explanations Emre99. Got it on all points. I need to manage my guys bars better that is for sure. Most of them have nothing left for the end. I simmed a stage and I finished 1st and 2nd and 10th. I have had nowhere near those results when I manage the team (laughing). About to do a stage that is 188km of mountains I wouldnt want to drive a car on let alone bike. I checked my guys stats and I only have 2 mountain guys. Will be a long stage for me obviously. Setting the short relay for the whole team at 59 to see if I can have any energy left later. A question about skill levels for different terrains. If I have a high (80+) rating for mountains then I can push them on the steep climbs and it affects them less?

Any info about sprinting will be excellent for me.

That was one of the more entertaining posts I've read for a while Smile

First, check the Tips and Tricks section for some basic guides: https://pcmdaily.com/tipstricks.php

It might perhaps be even more helpful to check the 'real life' guides to cycling. Team Sky, team of the Tour de France winner, posted a few of these prior to the race: https://www.teamsky.com/beginners-guide

There's also other guides such as this one (guide and analysis in one): https://adrianspender.com/blog/2012/07...me-around/

Thank you CrueTrue, I will read them after work. I had a 5 minute lead with 20 KM to go on my last stage. I led it about 160KM. Of course they caught me with 2 KM left (laughing) Almost made it that time. My team did absolutely horrible on the mountain stage.

If you're looking to start a career, here's a helpful post on how to do so:

About breakaway's, I've written a large post about this here:

https://pcmdaily.c...ost_522608

Another useful tip is to not relay at all when you are in a break, it will conserve your energy and usually you can get away with it.

But that's Sky-ethics riding Pfft

Something I sometimes noticed was that the breakaway riders would start attacking if you're not relaying with them for no reason. I don't know if they were just coincidences, but I hope not, that would be nice. Even though it's rather easy to counter the attacks, if you're a bit unaware you might need to spend some energy at least.

What you're saying is completely correct lluuiiggii. They even give you a warning by making the classic real life hand sign asking for relay, and a green message will appear at the bottom mentioning it. If you don't follow up on it, they will start attacking.

From my experience:

-They generally won't attack if they know that you're only in the break to protect your leader's yellow jersey in the peloton, or if you're there to protect your own Mountain jersey.

-Even if the above isn't the case, they generally only attack 50% of the time.

-If other breakaway riders attack because you're not relaying, it's usually only one or two that do so, which often results in the rest of the breakaway riders reeling them back in. This means you still don't have to do anything.

In the worst case scenario it's only you and another guy in the break, and he will keep attacking until you start relaying. Even in that case, I still just keep following him at 80 individual effort, because I think it makes my rider still consume less energy than the other guy.
