withdrawing rider from race

How do you withdraw a rider from a race before it starts. For example I don't want my sprinter riding the second half of the Giro.

You can't do it before it starts, only in 3D. Set the rider on the dot on 0 effort, he'll stop and soon withdraw (after you get the news that he's withdrawn, you can press backspace to get rid of him in the rider boxes, which will be already done in the next stage).
