When's the best time to use the gel? What does it do, practically? And when is it working best, when blinking or when flashing red? |

When flashing.
Maybe you have seen the flashing when your riders attack, it works the same.
It reduces the consumption of the red bar while it flashes.
BTW: Most of your questions have been answered before, you might want to use the forum search. |

It decreases how fast your red bar runs. When it's blinking, it's not having effect yet, it only has effect when it's flashing red. Logically then the best time is when you're suffering a lot, or before attacking/sprinting (I'm not sure if it's really used in sprinting, but well I always activate my riders gel before it).

Excuse me, I'm pretty new. Where's the forum search? Or do I search it manually? |

No need to excuse, just wanted to point it out.
Search is to the left: Second point under Main Navigation https://pcmdaily.c...
Also there is the tips and tricks section which could be useful: https://pcmdaily.c...tricks.php

Okay, thanks a lot for the response!
Because up until now, I usually activate the gel somewhere during mid-race. |

A couple of tricks on using the gel that I've found useful, correct me if I'm barking up the wrong tree:
If your rider is on a do or die solo (either he stays away for the win or gets caught and won't be able to compete) and hasn't used the gel yet, I pop the gel at some point and crank the individual effort up to about 90 briefly, being very careful to wind it down when the red bar is about half empty (the high heart rate causes the rate of red bar usage to go down slowly, and if it's all gone, that's bad). I've noticed that if the chase group is a small select one with few team mates (and even more so if I have a guy sitting in the wheels covering), there comes a point when they simply give up on the chase if your gap is large enough, or seems to be increasing.
On a circuit race, there is generally a prime spot to attack, like just before a bend going onto a steep hill. I sometimes burn the gels from a domestique or two to work out exactly where I should pop it on my leader to start glowing just at the place I want to attack. |
