for 3 times in the last 3 years happened as follow:
i am playing in extreme mode so it is very hard to win tour de france but i found a tactic.
in the last mountain stage i had my leader about in 20th-30th postion with a gap of about 15min/20min from yellow shirt. (my leader is a mon 80) .
for 3 years i went in a breakway in the last mountain stage, in fact if u are out of the tables the AI dont follow u in the brakway and i won with many minutes from AI raiders. i got 2nd, 2nd and 2nd place in the last 3 tours...with my fair raider
...i got for 3 times 2nd place. i dont think it is random! in fact it seem that AI yellow shirt get a strange boost if u are near to win the tour with that final brakway.
conclusion: i think this is a AI gameplay bug. i would like edit some file to force AI to close the brakways in the last mountain stages too.
is it possible?
Could it be that the gap between the number 1 and the number 2 before the stage was a few minutes?
I think the algorithmic for reeling in the breakaway is;
- that the yellow jersey (gc) is under pressure
- that the sprinter teams want to have a mass-sprint
I haven't seen teams pulling for second or third place gc's
or defending of a white (young) jersey.
So the tactic could very well work, if the gap is big enough to the leader in the race, you could make a jump to the podium.

exactly! 10minutes(9th place) for example is not enough (yellow shirt will reel to close the breakway, instead 19minutes (20th place) is a good point to gain tour podium
i noticed the same thing about white jersey or second place team, they dont work to close the brakway, only the tour leader do it!
i think it is very simple to fix , it is enough include the same condition of pulling at least for 2nd and 3rd team, and raise up the pressure limit at least up to 25min.
is it in the 2012 programs? i hope it is bc PCM20111, finally, have a very good gameplay

look here this is what i mean, i got 2nd place with iorio (a young raider with 81mon) gesink was the old yellow shirt and contador was second (20'' )
now the tables is totally changed after my breakway
