I don't have the best computer in the world, but I can run PCM smoothly on medium settings. There is never any hangups or nothing like that ever.
However, when I try to play Paris-Roubaix my computer nearly bursts into flames. It allways happens at with about 15km to go. I'm guessing it is due to the graphics, but what is it that is past the 15k-mark that you need a NASA-computer to run?
Has whoever made the race made the last part so ridicously detailed that it causes an average computer to crash?

I don't know about the official, but roturn's works just fine for me. Roturn in fact took good care in not adding too many cities, too big fields/forests in his classics since they're usually long and thus easier to crash than other races.
In fact I think I've played the Official version one day and it was also fine.
What happens anyway, your game just crashes and that's it? Have you already tried with lower graphics?
After about 1/3 it freezes completely a couple of times while my computers works like crazy. Then it works fine up untill the last 15km when everything just stops before the game crashes.

Okay, I tried lowering all the graphical settings and now it worked just fine. I'm guessing it's the "strain" of having to show the velodrome that slows it down.
