Sony Professional Cycling Team (2013)

Sony Professional Cycling Team

Hi everyone and welcome to my first PCM story. When the PCMdaily 2011 database came out, I decided to start an United States-focused continental team, but thanks to some good results in the first season (including a Top 5 with Tom Danielson in the TDF and 33 sprint wins with Farrar), the Sony team promoted to the World Tour. However, this meant that we had to give contracts to some foreign riders (E.B. Hagen, M. Breschel) too, because we didn't want to be relegated. The investment payed off, as we managed to be the sixth best team in the World Tour even tho we didn't take part in the Vuelta.

The sponsors were extremely happy so we pretty much got carte blanche in the contract negotiations. We decided to invite Valverde, and Jerome Coppel, one of the best French talents, to join us so we could further strenghten our stage race squad. Hopefully it will work out well - let the 2013 season begin...

One thing tho: I'm pretty new to PCM (and not really good at it yet) so I play in NORMAL difficulty

Let's start with presenting the 2013 World Tour teams and their key riders

Australian National Championships

Individual Time Trial
Summary
For the first time in years, the Aussie Nat ITT would not be won by Cadel Evans, as he retired at the end of the previous season. This meant the title was up for grabs, and it turns out that Jack Bobridge of Garmin-Cervélo (80 TT) will try to become his successor - apparently his form is already quite good this early in the season. Richie Porte and Michael Rogers did well, but couldn't beat Bobridge's time in the end. Adam Hansen did not perform well, getting a fairly disappointing 7th place.

Results
1. Jack Bobridge (Garmin) - 55'19"
2. Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) - +16"
3. Michael Rogers (Sky) - +32"
4. Heinrich Haussler (Garmin) - +1'04"
5. Cameron Wurf (Liquigas) - +1'12"
6. Travis Meyer (Garmin) - s.t.
7. Adam Hansen (Sony) - +1'20"
8. Brett Lancaster (Garmin) - +1'28"
9. Rory Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) - +1'36"
10. Christoper Sutton (Astana) - +2'08"

Start in Buninyong, 48 riders are participating this year..

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0003.jpg
As he is on his own, Adam decides to attack right from the start, hoping that the breakaway will make it today. But it will be hard, with the Garmin-led peleton aiming for victory as well.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0004.jpg
A few riders (Mark Renshaw (Katusha) and Graeme Brown (Rabo) are the most known) join him on his quest.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0005.jpg
More riders decide to enter the break, so now it totals 13 riders - strangely enough, Garmin is letting the break get a 6 minute advantage now

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0006.jpg
With about 35 kilometers to go, Allan Davis (Astana) and Trent Lowe (Team Type 1) attack out of the breakaway - no one else is able to follow, including Hansen.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0007.jpg
Hansen desperately tries to catch up, but fails because none of his companions is helping..

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0008.jpg
So he tries to bridge the gap on his own.. but fails.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0010.jpg
Davis wins the sprint against Lowe and will wear the Australian Champion jersey during the 2013 season. Congrats! Hansen comes in third, 1'34" behind Davis and Lowe.

Results
1. Allan Davis (Astana) - 5h11'38"
2. Trent Lowe (Team Type 1) - s.t.
3. Adam Hansen (Sony) - +1'34"
4. Mark Renshaw (Katusha) - +2'42"
5. David Jai Crawford (V Australia) - s.t.
6. Alastair Coutit (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) - s.t.
7. Karl Menzies (United Healthcare) - s.t.
8. Matthew Goss (Leopard-Trek) - +3'46"
9. Darren Lapthorne (V Australia) - s.t.
10. Michael Rogers (Sky) - s.t.

That's it for the Aussie Champs, hope you enjoyed it!

With such a team you should change to hard at least...if you are new to the game and get 33 sprint wins, change dificulty...Wink and good luck for your story.

Hmm yeah, maybe you're right - most of the wins were in minor races (we got little WT invites) with a weak field, but still 33 wins is a bit overkill - I've switched to Hard to make it a tad more exciting.

Well, it's that time of the year again, the real start of the season, the first World Tour race, Australia's Tour Downunder!

Stage 1: Mawson Lakes - Angaston
Today's stage is pretty flat, should end in a sprint if nothing goes wrong. Farrar wants to win this one, but local favourite & brand-new Aussie champ Allan Davis will certainly want to battle it out..

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0011.jpg
Start in Mawson Lakes - for many riders this is their first race of the season - they'll all want to shine today. What doesn't shine tho, is the sun. Unlike what you might expect in Australia during summer, it's raining and overcast - let's hope there will be no crashes this early in the season.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0012.jpg
The breakaway that formed almost immediately contained some strong riders, like Arvesen (Team Sky), Weylandt (QuickStep), Loddo (Liquigas) and Malori (Lampre). The first KOM Sprint was won by Arvesen, followed by Grendene (TeamType 1) and Deeny (BMC). Congratulations to Arvesen, he will wear the KOM-jersey tomorrow!

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0013.jpg
The first of two consecutive intermediate sprints was won by Weylandt, followed by Ravard (AG2R) and Hutarovich (FDJ)

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0014.jpg
No one really fought for the sprints tho, and the next one was won by Deeny, followed by Ojavee (HTC) and Grendene.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0015.jpg
None of the sprinter teams wanted to give the victory away though, and thanks to the help of Rollin, the breakaway was caught quite early on (44km remaining).

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0016.jpg
Nothing really happened, no attacks. 8 km from the line and our sprint train was looking strong today. Would Farrar be able to finish it off?

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0017.jpg
With 3 kilometers remaining, Farrar was in a great position behind Vorobnev and Pinfold

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0018.jpg
The sprint starts. Unfortunately Pinfold fell back quite rapidly, so Farrar had to start his sprint quite early.
Guarneri -> Howard -> Davis -> Rast -> Loddo -> Farrar

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0019.jpg
Looking better, but Davis is looking strong too! It will be hard to catch up with him.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0020.jpg
Aye, Davis is clearly in form very early on already. Hopefully Farrar will be more lucky tomorrow. Davis is really on fire, winning the Aussie Nationals and the first stage of the TdU. Leigh howard of HTC comes in as third.

Another flat stage, the obviously in-form Allan Davis will certainly be looking to continue his winning streak, but he should expect fierce opposition from the likes of Farrar.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0027.jpg
Riders are impatiently awaiting the start of today's race, weather's looking fine too!

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0028.jpg
Immediately a fairly strong breakaway of 9 formed, consisting of: Kohler (BMC), Hoste (Rabo), Jodts (QuickStep), Mortensen (Leopard), Oss(Lampre), McCarty (TT1), Wurf (Liqui), Reynès (OmegaPharma) & Ojavee (HTC). Yup, Ojavee's here again - either he's in great shape already or he wants to please the sponsors.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0029.jpg
We're trying to keep the gap manageable.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0030.jpg
No fights for the KOM jersey. Hoste took it, before Kohler and McCarthy.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0032.jpg
Same for the sprints, no-one really cared. The riders seemingly passed it without noticing. Mortensen -> Kohler -> Ojavee

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0033.jpg
8km to go and the break still has a 1'35" advantage. Clearly many domestiques were not in great shape yet. Will the break make it?

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0034.jpg
Nope, the peleton caught them in the final kilometer. Davis takes yet another victory. Farrar is lucky to get second place - a very bad leadout by A. Pinfold meant that he had to start from way behind (+/- 25th position). Hopefully Pinfold won't make such mistakes anymore - his contract is ending this season..

Allan Davis (Astana) -> Tyler Farrar (Sony) -> Anthony Ravard (AG2R) -> Jacopo Guarneri (Liquigas) -> Juan José Haedo (Saxo)

Other News
-> Allan Davis seems all but happy with his stage wins in the Tour down Under. In an interview with CyclingNews he says:
"I'm not at all in shape, there's still a lot of work to do"
"Let's put it like this, if I would get a quarter for every training I relunctantly do, I would be rich."
-> Walter Sybrandy of Endura Racing has been suspended by the UCI. The 27 year old timetrialler has allegedly used blood doping.
-> The 2013 World Championships will be held in Conegliano, Italy. It appears that it is a course perfect for puncheurs.

Tour Downunder
Time for Stage 3: could we see the first time gaps here?

Stage 3: Unley - Stirling
As this stage includes the first hills of this year's TdU, it looks unlikely that Davis will win again - but then again, Farrar won't stand much of a chance either.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0035.jpg
A break of 8 forms: Mondory (FDJ), Kolesnikov (Katusha), Dall'Antonia (Liquigas), Rast (HTC), Abamoukov (OmegaPharma), Turgot (Europcar), Van Leijen (Vacansoleil), Vermote (QuickStep)

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0036.jpg
Unwilling to do any chase work today (we don't have many good puncheur domestiques with us), we decide to send out Hansen on a counter chase. Two riders, Vermeltfoord (Rabobank) and Rodriguez (TT1) join him on his quest.

Two intermediate sprints:
Sprint 1: Turgot -> Dall'Antonia -> Rast
Sprint 2: Abamoukov -> Rast -> Dall' Antonia

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0037.jpg
The two breaks join at the 45 km mark. Vermeltfoort immediately takes the lead.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0038.jpg
The second KOM sprint of the 2013 TdU. Van Leijen takes it before Hansen and Mondory. He will also take over the lead in the KOM Classification.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0039.jpg
As we pass the 20 km mark, the break holds a gap of 1'08". It looks unlikely that will make it, however.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0041.jpg
The break was caught just 2km from the line, which caused confusion in the pack. Some riders used this confusion to their advantage, and attacked. These riders include Haussler (Garmin-Cervélo), Vinokourov (Astana) and Nieve (Euskaltel). They never got a big gap, but at least they got a good position for the final sprint.

i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp328/CasperVg/PCM0040.jpg
A very good position indeed. Haussler continues the Aussie domination in the TdU so far. Vino comes in second, followed by Nieve, Cancellara (HTC) and L.L Sanchez (Rabobank). No time gaps were given to any of the favourites, so Davis remains in the lead.
