DB: PCM.daily 2011 Preview (edited by me)
Difficulty: Hard
The season starts with the team presentation on 5th January.
First, our main riders walk out. There is shock in the room when they see that Iban Mayo has returned to cycling with his former team.
Later on, the rest of the Euskaltel - Euskadi 2011 team is presented.
Three new sponsors have been taken on, and their hopes for the team this season have been announced.
Therefore, out main goals for this year are:
Finish as leading Sprinter - Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
Win the following race - Tour de France
Win the following race - Clásica San Sebastián
Stage win(s) - Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
Finish in the top 5 - Vuelta a Castilla y León
Finish in the top 10 - Vuelta a Burgos
As our goals for this year have been set out, our main riders have built their training to peak:
Sanchez will target the Ardennes classics and the Tour, also riding the Vuelta.
Anton will go for the Giro and the new UCI grand tour in early August Vuelta a Colombia. He will also be in the Ardennes helping Sanchez.
Mayo will go for the overall at Pais Vasco, help Sanchez at the Tour before trying to win the Vuelta.
Fernandez will go for points at Pais Vasco, and Castilla y León before trying to win San Sebastián
Verdugo will peak for Pais Vasco and Vuelta a Burgos
Txurruka will be the leader in Catalunya and will be on top form for the Tour.
For the month of January, we have decided to bypass the Tour de San Luis and Vuelta al Táchira and just go to the Tour Down Under.

The Australian TT Championship was close, with Porte finishing milliseconds ahead of Cadel Evans.
But Evans got his revenge and won the Australian Championships a few days later

The Tour Down Under is the first ProTour race of the year. It is not an important event for us though, and none of our bigger stage racers or climbers are interested in going. Koldo Fernandez will lead the team looking for fitness and maybe a good placing on some stages. Our aim is mostly for breakaways and to snatch some UCI points.
Greipel, Bos, Boonen, Renshaw, Swift, Dean, Hunter, Feillu, Rojas, Boonen and our own Fernandez make up the best sprinters at the race, with Leopard-Trek making their ProTour debut.
Geox, Androni, Team Type 1 and Saur get the wildcards for this race.
Stage 1: Clare - Tanunda
The many breakaway attempts couldn't stay away in the strong 40km/h wind.
Finally, after sending several of our riders out, Alan Perez gets a gap. The most time he makes is 4'05"
He has enough strength to attack up the climb as the peloton gains on him. He stays away and makes sure he will wear the climbers jersey tomorrow.
On the run in to the finish, Fernandez and G.Izagirre (protecting him from being followed) manage to follow Boonen and Bos. Unfortunately Boonen doesn't sprint at all, meaning Fernandez has a tough job.
Sky's train was so far ahead, that had enough to see off the faster Greipel and McEwen. Fernandez managed to get a 4th place for us.

Interesting
Wan't more. Can't you maybe skip the less important sprints stages in Australia and move faster on to the spring? -i'll hope that. |

Stage 2: Gawler - Hahndorf
Mikel Landa got into the day's break of 14 riders including Mondory, O'Grady, Konovalovas and Hayman. He was trying to defend the mountains jersey for Perez. However, he went over the sprint first and accidentally took it over.
The break was caught very late, with 3km to go. Luckily, nobody fell on this twisty downhill run in. Things looked good as Fernandez followed Greipel's wheel.
Fernandez just didn't have the speed to get past Greipel and surprisingly Paolini, but took 3rd in the end.

Stage 3: Unley - Stirling
Kreuziger, Cancellara, Gerdemann, Karpets, Duarte and Hoogerland are among the favourites for this hilly stage. We just want to try and keep the mountains jersey.
Alan Perez was out in front again today, along with Weylandt, Terpstra, Wyss and Hayman among others. He took the mountains points and both sprints so he now leads both of the classifications.
The break was caught with a long way to go on the finishing circuit. Here, the final sprint is started by Karpets, Gerdemann and Rojas, with Kreuziger, Hincapie and Paolini just behind. Fernandez wasn't strong enough on the final hill.
Karpets wins to go 3rd overall. Somehow the whole peloton stayed together on this hilly stage.
1. Vladimir Karpets | Katusha | 3h38'21" | 2. Linus Gerdemann | Leopard - Trek | s.t | 3. George Hincapie | BMC | s.t | 4. J.J.Rojas | Movistar | s.t | 5. Luca Paolini | Katusha | s.t | 6. Roman Kreuziger | Astana | s.t | 7. Richie Porte | Saxo Bank - Sungard | s.t | 8. Francesco Ginanni | Androni Giocattoli | s.t | 9. Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t | 10. Angel Vicioso | Androni Giocattoli | s.t |
Overall
1. Ben Swift | Team Sky | 10h37'33" | 2. Luca Paolini | Katusha | +0'01" | 3. Vladimir Karpets | Katusha | +0'01" | 4. Andre Greipel | OP-Lotto | +0'01" |
