Dwars door Vlaanderen is held annually in the region of West Flanders, Belgium. It's part of "Flanders Classics" who also organise Ronde van Vlaanderen and Gent - Wevelgem. The field is usually made up of riders who can ride well on cobble stones but are just below the ProTour bar.

The race starts in Roeselare and finishes in Waregem. The route consists of 191.7 kilometres circling through West Flanders, including 9 kilometres of cobble roads and 9 kilometres of steep hills (like Paterberg, Oude Kwaremont and Varent) with gradients over 15%!

Today is a busy day in the world of cycling, later today you can watch the best cobblers of the ProTour during the East Midlands Cicle Classic (United Kingdom). Or if you enjoy Continental Circuit stage racing more, you can go watch the FBD Eire Tour (Ireland) or Tour de San Luis (Argentina) instead, but we start this day with the early morning broadcast of Dwars door Vlaanderen in West Flanders, Belgium.

The first edition (2012) was won by Tom Veelers (Koppert Cycling Team), he won the group sprint (12 riders), and looking at the startlist, most teams are again hoping for a small group to stay ahead of the peloton and than sprint for victory in Waregem.

There are twelve PCT teams and five CT teams: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png BelarusBank Pro Cycling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Carlsberg - Danske Bank, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Fox Sports - Golomt Cycling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo Cycling Team and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava. In total there are 135 riders on the start list (8 riders per team, except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava, who have 7 riders in their squad), 36 riders are from Belgium, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost is the main supplier with 8 riders from Belgium.

Last year winner Bernhard Eisel isn't here to defend his title, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Kevin Peeters (winner of 2013 (Japanese - Korean Cycling Project), now riding for Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo Cycling Team) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Tom Veelers (winner of 2012 (Koppert Cycling Team), now riding for Gazelle) are.

The three main contenders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies.

Behind these main favorites there are a lot of other good cobblers here in Belgium like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Vandenbergh.

Also cobblers like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Breschel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Nuyens are present, they could all have a vital role as second leader in their teams.

Today is a busy day in the world of cycling, later today you can watch the best cobblers of the ProTour during the East Midlands Cicle Classic (United Kingdom). Or if you enjoy Continental Circuit stage racings more, you can go watch the FBD Eire Tour (Ireland) or Tour de San Luis (Argentina) instead, but we start this day with the early morning broadcast of Dwars door Vlaanderen in West Flanders, Belgium.

Let's first have a look at the main favourites for today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies.

Behind these main favorites there are a lot of other good cobblers here in Belgium like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Vandenbergh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Veelers (1st in 2012 edition).

As seen below the riders first cycle around Waregem, passing the finish twice, before entering the hard part of the race (last 100km). Many of the slopes on the way are 15% or more. It’s a race where a rider needs to be at the front all day and get over each climb with the first few riders. The cobble sections are also sometimes narrow, so positioning will be very important to avoid being in the wrong split, also if you ride in the back of the peloton, with the peloton stretched, you will have a lot of catching up to do before the next hill/cobble section starts!

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen002.PNG

Now let's go the live coverage of Dwars door Vlaanderen, 135 riders in total here at the start in Roeselare, including 10 National Champions from Belarus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Sakalou, Curaçao pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png De Maar, Latvia pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Liepins, Mongolia pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Delgerbayar, Ethiopia pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Mebrahtu, Luxembourg pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Fritsch, San Marino pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Zafferani, Malaysia pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Ahmad Zamri, Indonesia pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Wahyudi and Japan pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Shirota. The last one (Japanese Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Yamato Shirota) is the youngest rider in the peloton; age 20 (and 3 months), while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Sylvain Chavanel is the oldest; age 35 (and 8 months).
Looking out of the commentary window we can see it's cloudy but dry, we might have rain later on. None other than cycling legend Eddy Merckx gives the start signal: Here we go!

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen003.PNG

After 3km of neutral section, the race director waves his flag and right from the start we have the first attack of 3 riders: Max Losch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Fox Sports - Golomt Cycling, Johan Lindgren pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa - Ergon and Kristof Vandewalle pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Aegon - Lavazza.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen004.PNG

The 3 upfront really have to fight hard to stay away, the gap is now one minute to the peloton after 25km racing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Geert Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Daniel Oss are trying to get in the break as well.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen005.PNG

One hour of racing has passed and still the peloton hasn't slowed down yet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Oss are still trying to reach the 3 riders in front, but mainly due to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost (Naesen, De Vreese and Fouquet) we still can see the race situation in one shot; first 47km in one hour!

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen006.PNG

Two hours (and 86km) have passed now and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Oss have been pulled back by the peloton, after that the peloton finally slowed down a little bit. But as often happens the concentration in the pack went down too -> crash in the back of the peloton; Mirko Selvaggi pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Strava and Spas Gyurov pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Lululemon/Bulgaria Blackfish on the ground! Malaysian Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Ahmad Zamri and Indonesian Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Wahyudi were able to use their brakes in time to avoid falling.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen007.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Losch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Lindgren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vandewalle reached the Nieuwe Kwaremont first (100km from the finish line). Max Losch was first so he will enjoy his weight in Kwaremont beer after the race! The peloton crossed the top of the Nieuwe Kwaremont 6 minutes later. Apparently some managers didn't like the race situation and gave the order for mid-stage attacks. First to attack and try to reach the break of the day solo is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Tim Declerq (second best cobbler of Team Puma - SAP).

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen008.PNG

A little bit later also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Nick Nuyens (co-leader of Gazelle) attacks.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen009.PNG

Curaçaoan Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png Marc De Maar ...

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen010.PNG

... and Lierse SK's leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Stijn Joseph also go for this mid-stage attack tactic.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen011.PNG

Meanwhile the first group already is tackling the first cobble section (Kattenberg, 90km left), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Losch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Lindgren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vandewalle are working well together and still hold a 5 minute lead to the peloton. Between the front group and the peloton are the 4 riders who strangely choose to bridge the gap solo instead of working together.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen012.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Declerq is the first one to make it to the early morning breakaway. After a short period of time recuperating he again starts riding hard on the second cobble section of the day; Haaghoek, 80km left.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen013.PNG

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png De Maar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Nuyens made it to the first group. The Gazelle rider is looking really strong, and sets the pace on the Eikenberg, in the distance we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Joseph still working to get to the breakaway, the pack is still 4 minutes away with 60km still left to ride.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen014.PNG

All breakaway riders came together on the Taaienberg (55km left), but the 7 riders are losing time on the peloton, latest gap; 3 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Declerq
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/cdb.png De Maar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Joseph
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Lindgren
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Losch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Nuyens
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vandewalle

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen015.PNG

With 45km still to go the 7 riders are almost at the highest point of the race (154m), they are still in front of the peloton, but the peloton (91 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png AMEX-Navigon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Azteca - NBCSN and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost working hard) is closing in fast now, 2 minutes is the time difference on top.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen016.PNG

Almost everything comes together on top of the monumental Oude Kwaremont pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vandewalle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Losch couldn't keep up with the other breakaway riders and are already been taking back by the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost clearly doing most of the work now, only 35km left.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen017.PNG

Not the Oude kwaremont but the Paterberg seems to get the decisive role today; The five remaining breakaway riders are caught on top of the Paterberg. And together with almost all favourites in front of the peloton, they formed a new first group and got away from the rest during the descent of the Paterberg. This is going to be quite a battle!

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen018.PNG

So with 25km and 2 cobble sections left to ride we have big two groups 50 seconds away from each other; E1 (13 riders) <- 50" -> E2 (23 riders).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost again takes control of the first group and makes sure the second group can't come back anymore. We are in the streets of Anzegem now (18km left) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Team BPost tries to close the gap with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill but he actually is gaining ground. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies has no other option to bridge the gap on his own and off he goes.

We are almost in Waregem now and the situation is still the same, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies is going to win Dwars door Vlaanderen!

500 metres left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is losing contact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert for 3rd place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill still leads in front, can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies counter?

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen027.PNG

Nope! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Danny Summerhill (1st) wins Dwars door Vlaanderen 2015, he was the first to attack of the main favourites and played it really smart in the last 10km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Jerome Baugnies (2nd) - in hindsight - did to much work in the last kilometres, still second place is a very good result.

*INSERT DwarsDoorVlaanderen028.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Niels Albert (3rd) was best of the rest today, maybe next cobble races he should have a more free role. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Tom Veelers (winner of 2012) finishes strong, (4th) place, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Pieter Vanspeybrouck won't be happy with his result; (5th) place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Joeri Stallaert is Team BPost third rider in the top-10 (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Matti Breschel assisted Baugnies for a big part of the race (7th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Tim Declerq is the first rider to pass the finish line from the mid-stage-attack (8th). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Geraint Thomas was the only one to come back from behind (9th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Matteo Trentin wins the second group sprint (10th) - completing the top-10 - in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Sep Vanmarcke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Tom Boonen.

Info
Date: 01.07.2011
Country: USA
UCI Cat.: None
UCI Naam: Tour of America
UCI Road Calendar: Men Elite
Length: 21 stages, more than 3,500 km
Start - Finish: Manhattan, New York - San Francisco, California
Route: (by SportingNonsense) We start in Manhattan, New York - but the race doesnt hang around there, the opening flat stage and we already move into a 2nd stage, with the finish in Philadelphia. Stage 2 and State number 3, with a flat finish in Baltimore. For the 3rd stage, we get to the capital city Washington DC - but thats only on the route, before a flat finish in Hagerstown.
Various state parks and forests are ridden through on Stage 4 as we have the first of 2 key stages involving Morgantown. It's a hilly stage to get there, and a 26km TTT once there. The journey west continues from there, with 3 flat stages ending in Parkersburg, Columbus and Dayton, as we move from West Virginia to Ohio and then into Indiana, with Stage 9 ending in Indianapolis to close the first 9 days of racing and bring an end to the mostly sprint dominated action.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/toa1.png

The rest day flight of over 1000 miles takes us over states including Missouri - who have had their cycling fix for the year - and into one of the central points in American cycling, Boulder, Colorado. Immediately into the mountainous stages, and the first part of the route takes in some tough climbs in the first half before not the hardest finish in Breckenridge. The next stage to Minturn is next, classed as a tough hilly stage, but what follows is a mountain time trial at Vail Ski Resort - first going up, then back down again. Stage 13 next, and the Queen stage. From Vail, we head through towns Dillon, Silver Plume, Empire and Winter Park until the stage finish up Rollins Pass. 5 tough climbs that should have a huge effect on the race. The mountains continue on Stage 14, heading north from Winter Park, the big climb here coming on the Trail Ridge Road - which is closed in winters! Still over 100km to go from there though, but its not an easy route as we move back into Boulder. The Colorado leg ends on Stage 15, with a couple of laps of the Morgul-Bismarck cycling loop around Boulder.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/toa2.png

Another 1000 mile rest day journey and we are in Reno - perhaps not the best chosen place for a race day given the amount of casinos! It makes Nevada the 8th state visited, and we are soon into California (where we will stay) in a route around Lake Tahoe and ending in Tahoe City. I dont know why there is a Nevada City in California, but there is, and a hilly stage through the Tahoe National forest reaches it for a tricky stage finale. Any sprinters with energy left will enjoy Stage 18 - probably their last chance of victory aswell - as we head to the flat lands of Sacramento. Worries you may have that this route is light on individual time trial kilometres can be put to rest on Stage 19, a 57km course in and around Sacramento. In normal Grand Tours, the last TT would be the last decisivie stage. Not here, the race designer (i.e. me) has opted to end the race with 2 hilly stages. Stage 20 takes us to Santa Rosa and in Stage 21 we quickly reach San Francisco, with an intermediate sprint on or close to the Golden Gate Bridge, before we then head slightly eastwards to the Mt Diablo State park for the final climb of the race!
