So, did Trofimov spend 4 years preparing for this Giro? His last notable result was in Paris-Nice, in 2009.
Katusha randomly said Trofimov targets Top 10, and he wasn't far off it! As surprised as you, was quite consistent throughout.
Considering the squad they sent, Katusha's gotta be one of big winners here. 2 stages, few days in Pink, and a rider in Top 15. Pretty good going.
I always thought Caruso would be their best shot for the GC, considering this year's results. Way wrong here, and Caruso doesn't seem to be a 3 week rider. |

Caruso lost 27 minutes on one stage. |

He was already far down in the GC by then, so probably just took it easy to save himself for later stages.

Just watched the last km's. So still Cav and Greipel (and possibly Kittel) above all but is anyone in even remotely the same league as Cav when it comes to the last 3-4 stages of a GT?

Those figures compare to any 2010 onwards GT winner, if you ask.
407, 417, 426 or 425 W average, depending on the indirect evaluation method, if he weighed 70 kg.
Wiggins and Froome averaged 420 during the last TDF, with Froome probably able to achieve more. Nibali then was about 5 Watts below them.

Awesome work from OPQS, they improved hugely in leading out Cavendish
Yes, but without Greipel and Kittel, thus no Lotto and Argos-train, they had a pretty easy job.
This.
I mean Wurf>Longho Borghini>Sabatini>Viviani, or whatever the Cannondale train looked like, is no comparison at all.
Martin, Chavanel, Terpstra, Steegmans, Vanderbergh, Grabsch, Velits.
I can tell you this. OPQS will have a better train too
That's not want I wanted to say, and you're obviously right.
But drawing conclusions about their strenght simply from this Giro is wrong.
Of course. I doubt Kittel will challenge Cav, but Greipel will at least get a stage win from the Tour.
Shame that they will both be looking on Sagan's back.
Anyway nice Giro and convincing win from Nibali, he was in control of things all the way, Kangaert and Aru did some brilliant job for him,as well all the other teammates. Level of competition was quite low in this Giro, so i would not overestimate anybodys result. Tour will be twice a competition. Same with sprints, Cavendish had not a single great sprint opponent, these would not top10ed a single Tour stage...

Didn't get the chance to follow this year's Giro on TV, because I'm at work all day and I was busy during weekends.Still, I managed to follow it more or less with the help of livetickers and daily summaries.
I really liked it. The first couple of weeks were hectic and the last week was equally tense with snow still on the mountains. I'm glad that there were no mass crashes like in the Tour last year which saw the likes of Poels forced to abandon and made me rage. Abandons of Wiggo, Hesjedal and Gesink were gladly not caused by irresponsible racing or race design so I can live with it.
Hats off to Nibali for making the Giro his main season goal and showing what it means to be top of the world and to prepare specifically for this race. I don't think anyone other than Froome may have been able to compete with him. Cavendish was great but lacked competition of Kittel and Greipel. Di Luca was stupid but it shows that doping is still among the peloton.
I had a PCM Fantasy GC bet on Nibali, and was still unsure until he dominated the MTT. I was suprised to see so many people bet on him, I expected 75% of the bets to be on Wiggins.
I'm very curious to hear from all of you how you did in the PCM Fantasy betting. |

Although not quite so good in the others

In Stromeon's defence, he was supposed to do the Giro. The only reason he didn't is that he didn't want to race without Purito.

Yeah I probably did that more than a week before it started and everyone thought he was going to race then

Nibali has come a lot closer this Giro, but I still think Froome is better.
Also, Contador is nowhere near that good anymore. Purito and Valverde were both better than him in last year's Vuelta.
Yeaah but who won the race?

If you can read French, or can be bothered to Google translate, here are the late cyclismag-like power calculations for this year's Giro :
https://www.altern...alie-2013/
It appears Nibbles was as strong as his Summer 2012 self, but not better than that.
He's probably going to struggle against Froomechkin this Summer again then. |
