12.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 4
Roma - Sora: 148.0km
Tactics meeting
Finally the Giro starts looking like the Giro. A few hills will be negotiated en route to the town of Sora, where a nasty kick in the last kilometer awaits the riders. We'll probably not see any time gaps, but if you're betting on a rider like Napolitano for the win, you're wasting your money.
The field was all together before the uphill finish. We showed our Discovery colours for the first time this race, as Klöden had found his way onto the wheel of yesterday's winner Ginanni.
Around the final bend, it looked like a duel between Ginanni and Leezer for the win, but Klöden was still lurking on Ginanni's wheel!
Ginanni again! This gives him the pink and the red jersey as well! He has now doubled his haul from last year's Giro, where he won the final stage in Milano. Klöden is obviously no sprinter, so his 4th today was good. The finish was indeed tough, as Pellizotti, one of the overall favourites, sneaked into the top ten.

Nice result with Klöden. Ginanni looks really strong although there are several better sprinters there. Especially as the finals are pretty flat. |

Great result with Kloden for a non sprinter. Indeed, Napolitano is a moster

@roturn: Yeah, would have been even better with some bonus seconds You're right about Ginanni. No surprise he won the last one though.
Don't know what Garmin are up to. Farrar is nowhere to be seen, and it seems like they're using Dennis Pohl in the sprints for some strange reason. |

13.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 5
Sora - Montevergine: 219.0km
Tactics meeting
The first mountain test comes on this fifth stage. It's nothing really difficult, but the climb to Montevergine in the Apennines will serve as a preview of what's to come during the final week. This stage will be interesting for us, since we'll get a clearer picture of what to expect from our team. I'm also excited to see which of the overall favourites are on form.
In towards the last climb, Liquigas was the team setting the pace. This would mean that dominant 2009 winner Ivan Basso meant business again, after an off-year last season.
As often happens on the first mountain top finishes in GTs, nothing really happened on the climb. No breakaway was in front, and the main group was quite big when passing under the 5km banner.
Obviously, the Giro is not the Giro without attacking riding. Robert Gesink decided to test his legs 2.5km before the summit.
The likely contenders were not slow to react. Basso, Nibali and Pellizotti followed the Dutchman. Also able to match his accelration was LL Sanchez and our duo of Klöden and Armstrong. This meant that...
...Brajkovic was left behind! The Slovenian continues his bad climbing form from Romandie. He wouldn't lose much today, but it was worrying for the remainder of the Giro.
In the final kilometer, Ivan Basso proved to be the strongest, as he rode away from Gesink and Nibali. Is he back to the Giro-winning form of 2006 and 2009?
He was certainly in stage-winning form today, as he conquered the Montevergine! No big time gaps, but this stage carried some psychological importance.
Klöden and Armstrong finished in the group just behind Basso, Gesink and Nibali. It contained all pre-race favourites, so no big surprises on the first mountain. Brajkovic was 24 seconds further behind.

Of course its still too early but Klöden must watch out because Basso,Nibali and Gesink look very strong already.....or maybe they´ll loose power on last week |

14.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 6
Avellino - Foggia: 154.0km
Tactics meeting
A short stage which will probably end in another sprint, before we move into the hills of Central Italy. We're back to boredom today after yesterday's uphill finish.
A fairly messed up sprint saw Lampre's Claudio Corioni grab the stage win. It's the Italian's second ever victory, and by far the biggest! The home riders continue to dominate the Giro. We've now had Italian winners in all stages so far.

@luigi & roturn: I never said Brajkovic would be leader, so it's not so bad. If he loses even more time, maybe he can go stagehunting.
The two old men in the team looks like the best GC hopes. Armstrong is the stronger climber, but Klöden's TT is better. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. I'm worried about Basso though. He seems like he's up to something. |

15.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 7
Foggia - Chieti: 222.0km
Tactics meeting
The second non-flat stage of the Giro is a long one. It looks tailor-made for a breakaway. No matter what happens, the hills towards the end will be very interesting.
The break of the day was 13 man strong, so a lot of riders obviously thought the same as I did this morning. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to put any Discovery riders in the breakaway. These 13 riders had a 3 minute lead when they reached the highest point of the stage.
On the second-to-last hill, the break had split up. Out in front was Lorenzo Bernucci (LPR) and Jason Donald (Garmin). They were 1 minute ahead of the field with 14km to go.
At the beginning of the last climb, all escapees except Bernucci & Donald were swept up by the Liquigas-led main field. Were they planning something for Ginanni or Basso?
On the last hill, Bernucci cracked Donald, who soon went back to the peloton. Bernucci was still looking strong with only 7km to go, most of them downhill.
With Bernucci so close, we lifted the tempo. Klöden packs a decent sprint for a GC rider, so if we could get rid of a lot of fast men, maybe he had a chance for a stage win.
At the top of the last climb, Armstrong had splintered the field, but with 5km downhill to come, it would be hard for Klöden&co to stay ahead. And more importantly, Bernucci was still out in front!
With 2km to go, he looked like he would make it! The next group, led by Nibali on the descent, were closing fast though!
Lorenzo Bernucci held on, just! This is his biggest win since the TdF stage in 2005. Nibali and Nocentini completed the podium on the stage. Although the peloton was split in two groups, all got the same time, as the gaps weren't big enough. More hills tomorrow!

Gotta say I loled. The guy was impatient asking for the equipment and just get it 8 days later
Nice Top 5 with Lance. He does the work while Kloden rests but Lance still makes it in front of Kloden

@poiup: No problem!
@luigi, jeffyboy: Klöden is living off his good stage placings. Remember that Armstrong has the same time in GC. I think I have to wait until a few more mountain stages to decide on a leader.
Next stage coming up shortly!

16.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 8
Chieti - L'Aquila: 146.0km
Tactics meeting
Another hilly stage, this time from yesterday's finishing town Chieti to earthquake-hit L'Aquila. The last climb is situated only 3km from the line. It's 2km long and quite steep. Expect to see some action today, it is the Giro afterall!
The peloton climbed the last KoM-classified climb together, and caught the early breakaway in the process. 35 flat kms remained until the final climb.
13km from the line, Robert Gesink had no more patience, and attacked! He was looking to seize the pink jersey, as he was only 27 seconds down on Basso.
Unfortunately for the Dutchman, he never got a large gap. But his move was dangerous, so Basso and the other GC riders hurried to get up to him on the final climb.
The hard riding on the climb forced a very elite selection. Once again, Armstrong and Klöden were in the mix for us. It would come down to a sprint among the 8 riders in this front group!
Gesink was still going strong, but race leader Basso was even stronger! Klöden gave it all he had on the other side of the road.
Basso held on to win his second stage and Liquigas' fourth! Gerdemann in 2nd was a bit of a surprise. Once again, the podium evades us. Klöden narrowly missed out with his 4th.
The usually quite punchy climber Franco Pellizotti didn't make the final selection, and came in with the second group 19 seconds down on his former teammate Basso. Not a big loss, but you would expect last year's 3rd placed rider to fight it out on a stage like this. He's now 12th overall, 1'28 away from pink.

17.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 9
L'Aquila - Giulianova: 176.0km
Tactics meeting
Basso won yesterday, but if Liquigas want to make it five stage wins, they have to look to Ginanni today. It's a totally flat finish. Can the points jersey wearer make it three stages, will Haussler finally come to life, or will someone else steal the glory?
Someone else stole the glory. Mirko Lorenzetto's lunge for the line relegated Ginanni to 2nd. Lampre now has three stage wins with three different riders. The Italian domination continues: Italian riders have won all stages so far! It'll be difficult for them to continue this trend tomorrow though. Time trials aren't the Italians' speciality.

19.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 10
Giulianova - Giulianova: 54.0km
Tactics meeting
This is the only long time trial in the Giro d'Italia this year, but it goes over 54 lumpy kilometers. Only being a TT specialist doesn't help much today if you can't climb. It's a course which Ivan Basso should handle well, even if he's not the most aerodynamic of riders. We've been looking forward to this, since we have several good time trialists. Bring on the race of truth!
T-Mobile showed good form today. Thomas Lövkvist knocked teammate Gert Dockx off the leaderboard with a time of 1h15'19. His time showed what a tough time trial this was. Being tucked in an aerodynamic position for one hour and a quarter while negotiating three climbs!
Lövkvist was not the best Swede today. Gustav Larsson likes the Giro (top 10 the last two years), and likes time trials even more. Best time for Lotto's new signing, taking 58 seconds off Lövkvist's time.
Janez Brajkovic won a similar time trial in the 2009 Giro, but doesn't quite have that form now. He did a good ride though, and came in just 9 seconds down on current stage leader and former teammate Larsson.
The World champion honoured his rainbow-coloured skinsuit. Cancellara posted the new best time, 27 seconds faster than Gustav Larsson.
Oh my! Surprise of the season? T-Mobile's Linus Gerdemann clocked in to a new best time, and what a time! The German crushed World champion Cancellara by 1'07. Where did that come from?
A lot less surprising than Gerdemann's monster ride was the fact that Armstrong struggled against the clock. This time trial was luckily not among his worst in recent times. +2'29 and provisional 6th for Lance.
Klöden is our best time trialist in this race on paper, and the German champion duly delivered! He beat all human performers, even Cancellara, but had to settle for 2nd, a whole minute behind Gerdemann.
Acqua&Sapone leader Vincenzo Nibali did well, and Robert Gesink was disappointing. Nibali even caught Gesink on his way to a provisional 5th. Before today, Gesink was looking like one of Basso's biggest rivals for the overall win, but fell down to 11th in GC after this stage.
Pink jersey Ivan Basso won a time trial on his way to the insane 2009 Giro victory, so should keep his jersey comfortably today. Ivan the Terrible had a good day, and came 4th on the stage, but is now only 2 seconds ahead of Gerdemann in the GC! Gerdemann has really done the ride of his life! Good news for us as well: Klöden sits 3rd overall.

Gerdemann was really superior there. Beating Cancellara and Klöden with 1 minute, that's quite impressive. The Discovery riders did a great TT too. 3 riders in the top 10, GC looks good now.
