@ poiup: Here is the Astana & T-Mobile TT equipment. Frames, wheels, helmets. Please note that the names are the same as those I replaced, so if you want these as new equipment in addition to Astana and Highroad equipment, you will have to rename them.

02.05.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 5
Aigle - Les Crosets: 148.0km
Tactics meeting
The penultimate stage is the queen stage of the Tour de Romandie. The tough mountain stage ends on the ski resort of Les Crosets. Brajkovic always seems to struggle when successive mountains are thrown at him, so coupled with his questionable form, we don't have high expectations today. Hopefully he can cling on to his top ten spot.
On the first mountain, the break of the day formed. Strong riders in it were Pinotti (Ceramica Flaminia), Eibegger (Katusha) and Rodriguez (Caisse d'Epargne). The latter obviously had some fans in Switzerland, as his name was written on the road.
The support of the fans must have motivated him, as Rodriguez only had Katusha's Eibegger for company on the penultimate climb. These two were 5 minutes ahead of the peloton. Rodriguez was 7 minutes behind in the GC (109th).
Purito was flying today! As he began the 18km last climb, he had left Eibegger behind, and led the pack by 4'30.
Alarm bells! Back in the pack, Brajkovic had trouble keeping up. He lingered around the back almost as soon the climb started.
With 10km left, race leader Scarponi forced the tempo in the main group. Brajkovic was about to enter his red zone, and still a lot of riders were left in this bunch!
Lights out, engine blown. 6km before the summit, it was over for Brajkovic. What is it with him and multi-mountain stages?
Rodriguez was definitely not in trouble. Yet. He soldiered on up the climb, and held a lead of 2 minutes at the 5km banner. This could be one hell of a stage win!
Behind Purito, only Arroyo and Joly were able to sort of keep up with Scarponi. The yellow jersey was on fire!
Inside the last kilometer, Scarponi could see Rodriguez in front of him. But it was surely too late to catch him?
Rodriguez held on by a comfortable margin, and made sure both mountain stages in Romandie ended with a breakaway win. A great victory for the Caisse rider, who usually has to work for his teammates. This daring ride earns him the climber's jersey and moves him into the top 20 overall.
Poor (or spineless) Brajkovic crossed the line in 20th place, 3'54 behind Purito. He loses 3 minutes to Scarponi, and falls down to 13th overall. Now we need a strong performance in the closing time trial tomorrow...

03.05.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 6 [Last stage]
Lausanne - Lausanne: 20.0km
Tactics meeting
Brajkovic didn't shine in the mountains, can he do it on the TT bike? He's a minute behind a top ten placing, so if he puts in a good ride, he can get among the top ten. Scarponi's overall victory is pretty safe. For the stage win, our biggest hope should be Vladimir Gusev, who came 2nd in the prologue a few days ago.
Lars Boom came 3rd in the Romandie prologue, and set out to do well in the last stage as well. Early lead for the Dutchman, who took it easy in the mountains in this race.
David Millar came out from hiding to record a new best time! A good show of strength from our British veteran! He's been invisible before now in this season.
Our hope for the stage was Vladimir Gusev, and he really gave it a go! The Russian road race champion smashed Millar's time by 36 seconds! On course for a stage win?
Steve Morabito has had a good Tour de Romandie, and the prologue winner rode hard today as well. He couldn't beat our Gusev though. 27 seconds and 2nd place so far for Morabito.
Brajkovic must have had a good night of recovery since yesterday, because he was absolutely flying! It even looked like he could win the stage, but in the end he had to settle for 2nd, 6 seconds off the pace. Still a brilliant result!
Scarponi defended his jersey well, coming 4th on the stage. Which meant that Discovery had done a 1-2 with Gusev and Brajkovic! Superb!

Finally a win! Our first one since Ciolek's stages in Tirreno - Adriatico. However, the major win achieved today was Scarponi's overall. The Italian won one stage and came second in both mountain stages. He's looking very good for the Giro. The U25 jersey winner, Rémi Cusin, was a bit of a surprise.
As for Brajkovic, this was far below expectations, and he has to do some extra work before the Giro if he wants to be reckoned with when we decide on a leader. Another disappointment was Ciolek, who couldn't even finish in the pack on the flatter stages. But he doesn't need to be in shape now, so it doesn't matter that much. Gusev was our only performer, and impressed by winning the time trial.
Next up is a very uncertain Giro d'Italia for Discovery Channel. What to do without our defending champion and designated leader Roman Kreuziger? We travel to Italy without any clear expectations or targets. This could be interesting. Stay tuned! |

09.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Past winners
2009: Ivan Basso (Liquigas)
2010: Roman Kreuziger (Discovery Channel)
The Giro d'Italia 2011 is the 94th edition of the Giro and takes place entirely within the borders of Italy. For Italian teams and riders, this is the biggest event of the year!
The Route
This Giro is one for the climbers. It starts in Genova with a normal road stage, and the first nine stages only contain one mountain top finish. Stage 10 is a 54km time trial, the only real treat for the time trialists this year. The second part of the Giro is filled with tough mountain stages, including one that crosses the Gavia pass, but there are only three mountain top finishes throughout the race. The penultimate stage is a short time trial up the Ghisallo climb, known from the Giro di Lombardia, before the Giro finishes with a sprinter's stage in Milano.
The Contenders
Vincenzo Nibali (Acqua & Sapone)
Last year's runner-up is naturally the favourite in defending champion Kreuziger's absence. The Acqua & Sapone rider Nibali was also 4th in 2009, riding in support for Basso. An 8th place in Tirreno - Adriatico is the only result he has to his name this year, but the Giro is his big goal.
Ivan Basso (Liquigas)
The dominant 2009 winner rode the Giro as training last year to focus on the Tour. He struggled in the Tour, so maybe he has learned his lesson. If he is motivated and on form, Basso can turn out to be a clear candidate for victory.
Robert Gesink (Quick-Step)
Surprisingly, Quick-Step don't start Michele Scarponi in the Giro. Instead it's Robert Gesink flying the Belgian team's flag. Gesink was 7th in the 2010 Tour de France, and 2nd in Tirreno - Adriatico this year. The Dutchman can pose a serious threat to the home favourites.
Franco Pellizotti (Saunier Duval)
Franco Pellizotti came 3rd last year while riding for Liquigas, and has since found himself a new team. The curly-haired climber has always been consistent in the Giro. Saunier Duval keep comeback kid Ricco out of the Giro. He's probably not quite ready for a Grand Tour yet.
Mauricio Soler (Barloworld)
Since bursting onto the European scene by winning the climber's jersey in the 2007 TdF, Soler has concentrated on the Giro, where he finished 3rd in 2009 and 5th last year. He's horrible against the clock, but with the amount of climbing in this Giro, he's in with a chance of overall victory.
Some notables are missing from the field. One would think that Romandie winner Scarponi would have started the Giro going by current form. Also missing are last year's most entertaining duo, KoM winner Pozzovivo and climbing sensation Michele Gaia (both from Colnago - CSF Inox). They're probably aiming for other races, even though their team is in the Giro.
Our goals
Roman Kreuziger got injured in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and will be out until June, so our GT starlet will not be able to defend his Giro win from last year. His replacement in the intended Giro lineup will be Jurgen Van Goolen. We had decided to give Kreuziger some serious support, so we will still have a strong team in Italy, but neither Armstrong, Klöden nor Brajkovic are as prepared for the Giro as Roman would have been.
Without our leader, we really don't know what to expect from the Giro. Some of our riders could perhaps do well in the GC, and we'll see how they go in the beginning before deciding on a leader. The only thing we can promise from the start, is attacking riding and a lot of effort! I'm curious to see how this turns out.

Nice overview as usual, and very strong team your bringing. You can still get top 3 I think with one of your riders.

@pellizotti, baia, luigi: Thanks! The TT results were very welcome after a disappointing Tour de Romandie.
@valverde: Thank you! A top 3 will be nice, but it could be difficult since none of the potential leaders are peaking 100% for the Giro. |

09.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 1
Genova - Pisa: 202.0km
Tactics meeting
The Giro begins with a road stage ending in the city of the leaning tower. It will most definitely be a mass sprint, which means we will do next to nothing on this stage. Sprinters who are here to fight for the victory include Heinrich Haussler (Saxobank), Tyler Farrar (Garmin), Allan Davis (Katusha) and home favourites Lorenzetto (Lampre) and Napolitano (Quickstep).
The first one who lost his chance to win the Giro was T-Mobile's Thomas Lövkvist. He went down in a crash with 6km to go, and never made it back to the peloton. The Swede was therefore more than 3 minutes down in the GC already.
The slightly hilly profile softened the legs of a few pure sprinters. Italian powerhouse Enrico Gasparotto was fresh at the finish, and takes the first Maglia Rosa of the Giro d'Italia 2011!

10.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 2
Pisa - Follonica: 195.0km
Tactics meeting
Today's profile is even flatter than yesterday's, so expect another mass sprint finish. This will probably be the norm until the first mountain top finish comes in stage 5.
The sprint trains lined up as the peloton came close to the finish. Gasparotto looked determined to defend his pink jersey, as he was tucked in behind Haussler.
New Quick-Step recruit Danilo Napolitano was the fastest today! Significantly, Elia Rigotto finished 2nd again, so he overtakes both the pink and the red jersey from Gasparotto. Italians stacked the top 4 on today's stage.

Napolitano became a bomb Just a lack in the mountains could make him abandon earlier.
Good luck with Brajkovic. Hope he can replace Kreuziger as good as possible. |

11.05.2011: Giro d'Italia
Stage 3
Grosseto - Roma: 187.0km
Tactics meeting
Another pan flat stage. It's not like the Giro to present such a sprinter's paradise. We're visiting the finishing city of the 2009 Giro, namely Rome. Ivan Basso won the stage back then, but will probably not repeat that today.
Basso's teammate Francesco Ginanni came out on top today! Elia Rigotto finished 2nd for the third day in a row. He therefore keeps his leader's and points jerseys, but must be getting frustrated at all the 2nd places. Haussler is steadily improving: The pre-race sprint favourite finished 3rd on this stage.
