So that's why Boonen abandoned the Giro.

Really no surprise here. Iranian domination.
Also 11 and 12 from those two teams. Weird that the winner is the only not from those teams.
In other news nice start for Van der Ploeg in Kumano. Also Thömel doing well so far.

It surprised me too, however two classic "monsters" got a win on the same day.
Boonen and Gilbert ....
Nice to see that Boonen looks 100% back now.
Hm that Iranian bloke must be a commentators nightmare ...

I don't know why Procyclingstats have put together Pourseyedi's two surnames. He's usually just known as Mirsamad Pourseyedi. I'm not familiar with Iranian naming customs, but I can imagine that it's something like the Spanish. Just as Ghader Mizbani Iranagh (6th in the stage) is usually called just Ghader Mizbani.

Démare wins his first race this season. He won the sprint from a small peloton.
Other results, today:

The aussie VDP is a nice solid rider and Avanti are obviously a quality team, if only they could find the funding to step up then they could do well and be competitive as they have a strong team structure.
The Iranians are just hilarious! Can't believe that they lost a stage

Van der Poel already 7th in GC. Maybe he can get a stage win tomorrow, the stage should suit him. Looks a bit like a CX parcour profile ^_^

Démare dominated the sprint today with an easy win.
And in Iran a mass sprint with a Turkish win:

Another nice result by VDP in that race. Podium at the end of the day, why not Mathieu? Some really nice form he got there. Tomorrow looks to be the deciding hilly stage of the race, so GVA moment is about to come. Someone knows how the descent is tomorrow? Maybe we get to see some CX downhill artistry from VDP or Wout.
@Spilak: Wow, what an idiot. Good reaction by the first rider though.
