Horrible crash with Kreuziger, really bad he's gonna miss the Giro.
And yes, Valverde did not win the other two Ardennes classics!!

@all: Thanks for the support!

Certainly makes the story interesting to see how you cope in the Giro without Kreuziger. Will you still try to aim for the GC with another rider? Or the points? Or the mountains? Or just stage wins?!
Still, without a doubt in my mind, one of the best stories around.
I think I'll just go with the original team, since very few other Discovery riders are fit at the moment. I was going to send a strong team anyway. We'll just see how the race pans out, and what can be achieved.

28.04.2011: Tour de Romandie
Past winners
2009: Fran Pérez (Caisse d'Epargne)
2010: Roman Kreuziger (Discovery Channel)
The Tour de Romandie was meant to be Kreuziger's final preparation for the Giro, so without him, this race feels a bit less meaningful.
The race starts off with a 6km prologue time trial, and ends with two mountain top finishes and a 20km time trial. Stage 2&3 are undulating. Michele Scarponi is the biggest name participating, and the Italian seems to be on fine form after the classics. Other rivals for the win could be Joly, Arroyo, Moncoutie, Pietropolli and Iker Camaño. Not a very strong field, in other words.
In Kreuziger's absence, Brajkovic is tasked with leading the team in Romandie. Considering the weak startlist, he's actually got a very good chance of winning. Anything less would in fact be a slight disappointment. Eisel and Ciolek are here to concentrate on the flat stage 3.

28.04.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 1
Genève: 6.0km
Tactics meeting
With the big mountain stages coming later in the race, the prologue is of minimal importance to the overall standings. Nevertheless, Brajkovic will probably put himself in a good position compared to his overall rivals today. Vladimir Gusev should also be going well on this stage.
Home favourite Steve Morabito was cheered on by the crowd, and that must have helped him, because he set a very good early time.
What on earth was Brajkovic doing today? The usually strong time trialist was totally off the mark, clocking in 19 seconds behind Morabito. He took a provisional 27th place, but would fall further down as other riders completed the course.
Lars Boom did well in Amstel Gold Race, and has carried his form on to Switzerland. The Rabobank rider finished 7 seconds behind Morabito to claim a 2nd place for the moment.
Vladimir Gusev saved some of our confidence today. He rode one second faster than Boom and grabbed 2nd place. Steve Morabito is therefore the winner of the Tour de Romandie prologue. Jani Brajkovic ended up in 38th place.

29.04.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 2
Neuchatel - Neuchatel: 171.0km
Tactics meeting
The riders face some horrible weather conditions on the first proper stage of the Tour de Romandie. The parcours is a circuit around the Lake Neuchatel area, with a hill included. It's uncertain whether the climb will be enough to prevent a mass sprint. We certainly hope for a sprint, as Ciolek is our best bet for the stage win.
T-Mobile's Ben Day was first over the hill on most occasions today, and got himself the KoM jersey, but his breakaway was reeled in towards the end.
5km from the line, a mass sprint finish looked likely. Ciolek had not survived though, but Eisel was right up there, so he would be our sprinter today.
Suddenly, Quickstep's Michele Scarponi rocketed out of the peloton! He was obviously among the fresher riders after all the hills.
Race leader Morabito sensed the danger, as Scarponi was just 23 seconds behind in the GC, and went after the Italian. Behind, we kept pushing the pace to bring the attackers back.
Scarponi looked certain for victory when he passed under the red kite, despite the peloton charging behind him.
And he held on! The pre-race favourite strengthens his favourite status after this determined effort.
The pack managed to close in on Scarponi enough to make sure no time gaps were given. Gusev finished as the best Discovery rider in 9th place, as Eisel ran out of steam towards the end. Our Austrian sprinter finished 11th.

30.04.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 3
Neuchatel - Thoune: 143.0km
Tactics meeting
This is Ciolek's stage. It's the only flat one in the race, and with our two German-speaking sprinters, we should be right up there.
Ciolek was once again not fresh enough to contest the sprint, so we would once again have to put our faith in Eisel. 5km out, Brajkovic and Gusev had the Austrian well-positioned.
2km remained, and Gusev & Eisel found themselves with some ground to make up. Brajkovic hadn't managed to keep them in the front.
Under the red kite, Bbox' Arashiro was in the lead!
But the Japanese had gone to early, and was swamped by a lot of other sprinters. Cervélo's Matthew Goss came out with the victory. Eisel finished in a disappointing 5th.

In that field a 5th is a bit disappointing. Beaten by C. Fumagalli (who?)
Eisel's form isn't that bad, either.
We're short of wins this season, the only PT victory has been Ciolek's T-A stage. Let's hope Brajkovic can do something in the two upcoming mountain stages. |

Bad you couldn`t get a better result on the expected flat stage. And hopefully Brajkovic can fool everybody in the peloton by performing bad on the TT and dominationg mountains

01.05.2011: Monthly summary
April
Right in the middle of the Tour de Romandie, April turns to May. April was the month of the big classics, and races like RvV, Paris - Roubaix and LBL stole most of the headlines. The Giro is not far away now.
Notable results
Gran Premio Miguel Indurain: | Egoitz Garcia Etxegibel (Liberty Seguros) | Ronde van Vlaanderen: | Tom Boonen (Quick-Step) | Vuelta al Pais Vasco: | Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) | Gent - Wevelgem: | Alessandro Ballan (Lampre) | Paris - Roubaix: | Stijn Devolder (Saxo Bank) | Scheldeprijs: | Nick Nuyens (Rabobank) | Amstel Gold Race: | Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) | La Flèche Wallonne: | Alexander Efimkin (AG2R La Mondiale) | Liège - Bastogne - Liège: | Philippe Gilbert (Silence - Lotto) |
The main news for Discovery Channel in a moderately successful month was Kreuziger's injury which keeps him out of the Giro. That is a big blow for us. In terms of racing, Kreuziger performed well in the two classics he rode, while Eisel struggled on the cobbles. Kreuziger also got a decent 5th place in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The month of April didn't bring us any wins, so we're still stuck on 7 wins (Levi 2 in Mallorca, 2 in AToC, Talansky 1 in AToC, Ciolek 2 in Tirreno).
Valverde still sits on top of the rankings after wins in Pais Vasco and Amstel Gold Race. He briefly lent Ballan the ProTour jersey after the latter took 3rd in RvV. Ballan's cobbled results takes him up to 2nd in the individual rankings, while Saxo Bank notched up several strong placings in all classics, including a Paris - Roubaix win (Devolder) to assume pole position in the team rankings. Voeckler's Paris - Camembert victory helps him to the top of the continental rankings, while Vacansoleil look poised for an instant return to the ProTour.

01.05.2011: Tour de Romandie
Stage 4
Fribourg - Nendaz: 143.0km
Tactics meeting
Today's stage ends with a climb up to the small town of Nendaz. With no difficulties before the last climb, this should suit Brajkovic perfectly. His showing in the prologue was a bit worrying, but I think his form is sufficient to perform well on this mountain.
The early breakaway reached the bottom of the 14km last climb 3 minutes in front of the peloton. No big names were here, riders like Luca Solari (Katusha), Hubert Schwab (T-Mobile) and Matteo Bono (Lampre) were perhaps the strongest.
4 kilometers into the climb, Matteo Bono (Lampre) attacked his fellow breakaway companions! He was obviously gunning for victory, as the main field was still 2'30 behind him.
Astana kept the pace relatively slow, since race leader Morabito was a limited climber. None of the other teams seemed to be willing to come to the front.
5km from the summit, Bono's lead was still 2'30. It looked good for the Italian!
3km from the top, something suddenly happened! Scarponi and Joly went on the attack together. Brajkovic couldn't follow them. He didn't seem very strong today. Scarponi & Joly had 1'30 to close down if they wanted the stage victory.
Just before the red kite, Noval and Brajkovic were barely hanging on the remnants of the peloton. Bono was 1 minute ahead...
...and doing his best to hang on! Scarponi and Joly were closing in rapidly! This could be a serious heartbreaker for Bono!
But he made it! Matteo Bono took the victory just ahead of compatriot Michele Scarponi, who takes the yellow jersey. Joly lost some ground during the last meters.
Brajkovic finished with the group behind Bono, Scarponi & Joly, but we had hopes of a lot more than this. Tomorrow's tougher mountain stage is not Brajkovic territory, so our ambition of taking the victory in Romandie seems lost.
