Great to see Villella doing well in San Luis. Chaves did great with a 6th in the GC.
Good to see the team getting accepted for Milano - Sanremo. Will be hard to get a top 10. Team looks certain for a spot in Il Giro. |

January sees the WorldTour action kick off in Adelaide, Australia, at the Santos Tour Down Under. Enrico Gasparotto (Vodafone) took the overall victory, after soloing to the finish on the Queen Stage of Willunga Hill. Tejay van Garderen (BMC) finished second, ahead of Andre Greipel (Lotto), who took the Points Jersey.
Away from the WorldTour, Tom-Jelte Slagter (Belkin) took the victory at the Tropicale Amissa Bongo after two commanding wins. Jasper Stuyven (Baku) started life with his new team in a fantastic way, by winning the New Zealand Classic, as did Arthur Vichot (GUNK), who won the GP Marseillaise.

I've just read through the whole topic in the last few days as I was hoping to get into another Continental Team story before I start one of my own. Great stuff, loved it right from the beginning and even when the on-road action was lacking (which wasn't very often), the story and background events kept everything interesting.
For purely selfish reasons, I'd like you to continue with this because it's so well written, very easy to read and I even got so caught up in the story that I didn't realise from the thread title that Rapha would withdraw sponsorship until I was over halfway through the first season!
That, and any team that starts with four Aussie cyclists on board would easily get me to keep following
PS: Congrats also for getting this far into a story, my first only got to about March-April of the first year. Go Ewan!

@OZ: Thanks! Sadly the story is on hold for Martijn North story [insert small plug here], but it will return eventually. The team was built on unattached riders, and there were some nice Australian riders without a team

Tour of Oman
After a fantastic ride in the Tour de San Luis, the team heads to the desert for the Tour of Oman. A talent field is present in Oman, and we will be looking to show ourselves in the stages.
Adam Yates will target the Stage 5 Summit Finish on Green Mountain in his battle for a good GC placing, and he will be well supported in the race. Henri St-Pierre and Linus Gerdemann will work as domestiques, with his brother Simon also giving support.
Luke Rowe will be the squad's main sprinter, and his lead-out is bolstered by the Italian pair of Marco Canola and Marco Frapporti. Swedish TT specialists Tobias Ludvigsson will be the pilot in the train, and completes the 8-man team.

Good luck in Oman. If Adam manages to finish in the Top 5 that would be very impressive.

@Leone: thanks! It's a strong startlist, but I can only hope that many big names are lacking fitness. Top 10 is the aim.
@fernando: as long as the team is competitive on every stage I will happy
@sutty: that's the plan give them a run for their money

Tour of Oman
Stage 1
Stage 1 should end in a mass sprint, so the team will be looking at working for Luke Rowe today. We come to the race with one of our strongest lead-out trains, so there will be high hopes for the team. The only downside could be the lack of fitness.
A day in the break for St-Pierre could take some pressure of the team to help with the chase.
With the stage certainly going to end in a mass sprint, Lotto, Quickstep and Cannondale took up the pace making from the beginning of the stage. Riders tried attack of the front, but the high pace meant that it was pulled back very quickly.
The 'day's break' gained a maximum of 54" over the pack as it approached the KoM sprint. Lotto soon brought it back, and it was all set for a mass sprint finish at Sultan Qaboos University.
With 3km to go, Tobias organised the lead-out and piloted the train to the front with a purpose. OmegaPharma, Katusha and Lotto were also looking well organised, and it was going to be a great finish.
When the sprint started, the Big Guns really flexed their muscles. Cavendish (OmegaPharma) went early, forcing Katusha to react. Griepel (Lotto) showed nerves of steel, coming out of the wheels in the last 100 metres to take the win. Rowe finished strongly to finish 8th.
