Well deserved for Andrey!
@cactus, well I think they did that to avoid atacks so that Basso would have to close any gaps today.
But if you want to avoid attacks you don't exhaust your whole team when there's still 5km to go. Sure, the last 2km were mostly flat, but the attacks would still come with 3km or less to go.
You will never see a major GC-contender attack with 15km of climbing to go.
Except for Contador (twice), Nibbles and Schleck, all from the last 12 months.
Yeah, but that's one (almost) doper and one sobbing moron. And Nibbles, but he's just awesome.
Anyway, you could tell that none of these guys would attack. It's to early and the "attitude" just wasn't there. You can't win the Giro with 8 days to go, but Liquigas sure as hell might lose it because when we hit the actual mountains they will have no one left who can actuall work for Basso.

They indeed went to early, but at one moment they were with 4, Basso, Caruso, Szmyd and another guy. That other guy didn't do the pace but had to let go. That's why Basso had to do the pace for about one km.
The tactic itself was cool, the timing wasn't.

Rujano...
What on earth is he thinking?!
He definately has enough climbing skills to end in the GC top 10, top 5 even maybe, but he just wastes it...
Sure, he did some great climbing today, but the gap to the Maglia Rosa is only getting bigger and bigger like this

They went to late for stage victory, but to early to avoid attacks till the end.

They only went hard with 6/7km to go. That's not too early.

Is Paolo Tiralongo the Astana captain...? Or maybe he and Kreuziger shares it. |

Liquigas spent their helpers way to early. When the attacks finally came Basso was alone.

Yes, definitely too early, as shown by the fact that only 25! riders came within 1:20 from Hesjedal.

Mark Cavendish is still riding the Giro. He just crossed the line of stage 14 in good time. Earlier reports of withdrawal were untrue |

Had a look at the final kilometers again.
Worth noting is that the big group of favourites that finished together could've been much smaller. Rodriguez' attempt to reconnect with Hesjedal tailed off a lot of riders in that group, but they made it back later, when the pace dropped.
These riders were the only ones who never got dropped:
Scarponi
Basso
Rodriguez
Uran
Henao
Tiralongo
Pozzovivo
The likes of Schleck and Gadret were lucky that the group slowed down, otherwise they'd have lost time on their rivals.

Hesjedal in pink again, nice
Just finished watching the stage (woke up too late today). Boring until 3 km to go, but then some good action. Didn't expect Hesjedal to manage to get almost half a min on the others. And Liquigas surely messed up their timing a bit. But they seemed to lack some strength, after all they paced easy for several kms, then hard for 2-3 kms and then Basso is alone.

hmm liquigas strong but i wish they would have attacked with someone instead of using up their every stage and then basso is sitting their alone, wish they also could have spared Caruso because he seems really strong but loses his jersey after holding the pace the almost whole climb!

liquigas tactics are stupid, as they're wasting energy and getting absolutely nothing out of it |

The only thing Liquigas is doing is helping everyone else protecting their jerseys and making sure none of the other teams have to use up their helpers.

Thanks to Liquigas Hesjedal won't have to risk losing his jersey to a breakaway or anything like that. Same thing as it was when Purito held it.

Barta i love you, epic fight from him Congrats to Amador, he was fresher, Barta looked like he will die in a minute.
Not the best day for Kreuziger, but not big time loss, today will tell more.
Still i think he will be stronger than Tiralongo in the third week. In the end it is nice to have two strong riders in top 10 to help each other a bit.

Barta was incredible, he never gave up. At the 1km to go benner it looked like he was about to vomit. Amazing effort by him, but a good victory for Amador after training incident a few years ago.
