Apparently they have found testosteron and injection needles at Pistorius's house. Also an unlicensed gun
Seems like he just was another doper |

Why is this not a surprise to me....
I never liked him. He was arrogant and cocky.
Ok he was good but he was soooo much better than similar runners it just seemed odd.
The trial is really not going well for him, with every bit of evidence and testimony going against him...

I never thought it was fair for him to participate in the Olympics.
400m is all about lactic acid, and his prosthetic legs can't produce lactic acid.

According to his defence, it's a legal product.
The drugs found were a herbal remedy used by many athletes. "It's not a steroid and it's not a banned substance."
Unlicensed gun is obviously illegal, but hardly the worst offence in a country like South Africa.
Every bit of evidence and testimony going against him...
Not really. In fact, Pistorius' defence pretty much ran over the prosecutor in the second part of today's hearing.
(Please note I'm not taking sides here. I'm definitely not a fan of Pistorius, but his story appears more truthful today than it did yesterday. Of course that doesn't excuse what he did one bit...)

Not exactly (must go running, will explain later), but there are other arguments why he shouldn't run with normal runners. |

Surely his prosthetic legs don't produce power either..? |

No, of course they don't. But it's a bit more complicated than that on the power viewpoint.
A normal rider uses energy to counter the effect of his weight on his foot when his foot hits the ground, then he uses power again to push his body forward. That's how running works for normal people.
Pistorius' prosthesis absorb the first power and relieves it, which, in addition to what's left of his muscles, makes him run.
What happens when his prosthesis work so well that instead of being 1 or 2" slower than the current best he's as fast, or even faster, why not much faster ?
Second argument is his weight. It's an issue for any runner, although sprinters usually can use it to their advantage when it's muscles.
How does Pistorius weight relates to anything "natural" ? It doesn't. Surely being lighter gives him an advantage. If he lost his arms too, maybe he'd gain 1 or 2 more second with arm-prosthesis.
I don't know much about paralympic categories, even though the poor condition of my various joints could grant me access there some day, so probably he belongs there, but with the normal runners ? No way.
Then, on the lactic acid aspect, 400 m (or any other event) is not so much about producing it, but about dealing with it. It's also about sheer speed and max aerobic speed, btw. How do you deal with lactic acid that's supposed to burn your legs when you've none ? I don't know... He probably feels it in other parts of his body, but that doesn't really relate to anything for a normal athlete. |

I don't think it's so much an issue of biology or design etc..
The guy is missing two legs! Thats why he shouldn't run with able bodied athletes.
Ok so he's faster than almost (he does still get beaten by them) all other non-able bodied athletes, but he is still not as fast as the top able bodied athletes.
If he, or any non-able bodied athlete, gets to a stage where they can realistically make it to a top level final then they can move up to compete.
But i fear this is a debate for the Difficult Topis thread

Nah, my point is that with his current (not nowadays, but a few moths ago) abilities he could very well beat regular world records by significant margins if technology improved enough for that.
Nobody gives a fuck as long as he only reaches finales or semi-finales, but, to me, his performances mean nothing by comparison to normal athletes. |

If I could organize a perfect festival, I'd be (in no particular order):
The Doors, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Big Brother & The Holding Company (Janis Joplin), The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, Bruce Springsteen, The Velvet Underground and Neil Young. I still forgot some names, though
Count me in Ian, but invite also Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Cream, The Who, Clash, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Motorhead and many more.
I wonder if there is any existing high profile group (created after 1990) i can listen to, without feeling there is something wrong. Uhmm, maybe Queens of the Stone Age and Wolfmother. Also Eminem was decent artist, but not compareable with old Wu Tang and likes. And Foo Fighters or Muse have some nice songs, but still nothing like the good old times.
If only that concert would be possible. Would be absolutly amazing.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Shut up I'm freezing for the 4th month in row (with the exception of the 8 days I was in Washington in January where I had the pleasure of mighty 8-10 degrees... Felt like Summer after all these cold months). |
