Thanks. Was more than expected.
The Grand Prix Ouest France is a very hilly one-day classic belonging to the UCI ProTour. It was first held in 1931 and named Grand Prix de Plouay Ouest-France until 1989. The route is on a ~20km long circuit with 11 laps. The riders have to pass three climbs on every lap. In Kerihuel (2,3 km, 8 %), Lezot (1,3 km; 7 %) and in Ty Marrec (1,0 km; 7 %).
Several riders share the record of two wins. Philippe Bono, Armand Audaire, Emile Guérinel, Jean Gainche, Fernand Picot, Jean Jourden, Jacques Bossis und Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle.

Garmin squad in 2011
Also our squad is very strong here, we don`t really hope for a good result. Nobody is in a good shape as this race is exactly in the race break of most of our riders. Kessiakoff will be the most competive rider and will lead our squad next to Hesjedal.

Grand Prix Ouest-France
Plouay - Plouay
As written in the race information there are 11 laps a ~20km and 3 climbs.
For us it is most important to avoid crashes and maybe surprise with Kessiakoff or Hesjedal.
Several riders attacked today but none of them is a really good puncheur. Unfortunately we missed to get a guy into this group.
After Kessiakoff told us that he has good legs today, we hoped that many favourites already had a long season. So we took the pace to control the gap a bit better.
After the first half the advance became much smaller again. Kessiakoff is definitely feeling much better than Hesjedal, who is relaxing before his final peak with Lombardia.
With just 10km to go the group was caught and Gilbert attacks. Was this the decision? He looks really strong here.
In the background you can see Cunego and Schleck following. Also Kessiakoff is trying to keep contact to them.
As expected Gilbert wins the 2nd time in a row and is part of the records now. Like last year Cunego decides the sprint of the first chasing group ahead of Schleck. Kessiakoff on 12 and Hesjedal on 24 reached the finish in the next bigger group.
Not the best result, but the maximum we could expect.

The Vuelta Ciclista a España is the last Grand Tour of the cycling season. It was first held in 1935 and since 1955 annually.
As the other two GT`s the race will have some flat stages for the sprinters, some hilly stages for breakaways and some mountain stages for the favourites plus 2 time trials. As the route is normally very hilly, the real climber are often the biggest favourites and the timetrials aren`t that important than in the Tour de France.
The final stage is normally on a flat stage in Madrid.
With 3 wins each the Spaniard Roberto Heras and the Suisse Tony Rominger hold the record.
Most stage wins with 39 has Delio Rodríguez in the early years.
Result in 2010
1 | Alberto Contador | Astana | 2 | Samuel Sánchez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | 3 | David Arroyo | Caisse d'Epargne | 4 | Ezequiel Mosquera | Xacobeo Galicia | 5 | Ángel Gomez Marchante | Andalucia - CajaSur | 6 | Igor Anton | Euskaltel - Euskadi | 7 | Xavier Tondo | Cervelo Test Team | 8 | Ryder Hesjedal | Garmin - Transitions | 9 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-Farnese Vini | 10 | Richard Porte | Team Saxobank |
Contador won the Vuelta last year after his 2nd in the Tour. So he proved that you can be great in both GT`s. Surprisingly the wildcard teams Xacobeo and Andalucia participate without Mosquera and Marchante in 2011 although they performed great last year and they are the strongest climbers of their teams. Ryder Hesjedal on 8 was the first non Spaniard and celebrated a great GT after a disappointing Tour.
Garmin squad in 2011
Luis Leon Sanchez will be our leader. He is in a top shape and is focusing for a podium. He is still quite fresh and this could be his biggest advantage against a strong field. With Stetina and Kessiakoff he will have 2 good supporters in the mountains.
Rojas will be our rider for the flat stages. Luckily his crash wasn`t that bad but he still needs 2-3 stages to be in perfect form. Maaskant and Fischer will help him as good as possible on the final kilometers.
Maaskant of course is also a good rider for a breakaway as also Fischer and Pate.

A really strong startlist for the Vuelta. A closer look on the favourites in an extra post again. Just a short not of missing riders:
Mosquera and Marchante as written for the wildcard teams.
Damiano Cunego is also missing in this GT. So the winner of the Giro 2010 must be very disappointing for not being nominated in all GT`s this season.
Igor Anton is also not on the start. Obviously the team will focusing on Sanchez as only leader. |

Tough competition for LLS.
Expecting a good ride from Rojas, although no pressure |

@Tuco Indeed. It will be hard to beat all the better climbers and Rojas should definitely be a strong sprinter here especially with his hill stat. Hopefully we can win some stages or the points jersey with him, but this will be very hard
Overall favourites
He proved last year that he can be in a top form atthe Vuelta after riding the Tour. He had a very similar season plan this year and is of course favourite number one.
Kreuziger also rode a fantastic Tour and improved very well this season. With his climbing and timetrial skills he is another good bet for a podium.
Wiggins is the third big favourite for a podium. He also had a good Tour except of this one stage, that cost him the 2nd in the overall.
Frank Schleck had already a long season but he didn`t give everything during the Tour de France. So he might have more energy left. With Porte and Fuglsang, which are also good for a top 10, he has one of the strongest squads behind him.
With just ~40 race days, Sanchez will be in a top shape for the whole Vuelta. Most opponents have already between 50-65. But will this advantage be enough to beat the bests?
Sanchez did very well last year but he starts to decrease. It`s not that bad this season and it might be the last chance for him to win a GT, but his season was also quite long.
On the last timetrial Rogers kicked Hesjedal out of the top 10 in the Tour, hopefully this won`t happen again in the Vuelta with Sanchez.
He has already most race days of all favourites, so his chances might be limited.
He is no longer the top climber he was a few years ago, but with a good shape he is still able to perform great on hard terrain. But also because of his weak timetrial skills it will be hard to get a top 5 for him. So he might be one of the big favourites for the KoM jersey, too.
Sprinters will follow soon. |

Strong start list. Hope anyone can beat Contador from another win.
Good luck for Sanchez =) Rojas hopefully can grab some stage wins
Spoiler And of course, hoping for Fischer in a breakaway or anything like that

Sprinters/Point jersey
Allan Davis is definitely one of the most successful sprinters in the field. He had several good results in big races in this season and is also quite good on hills. So he is the biggest bet for point jersey.
With his success in the Vattenfall Cyclassics he proved that he can beat big names in a sprint. So he is one of the main favourites for the flat stages. On the "hilly" sprint stages he might have problems.
Rojas is a very similar rider than Davis but he hasn`t proved to beat the big names. But I hope that he will start with it this Vuelta.
Ventoso had a very long season with RadioShack and also a quite successful one. Often he had to share the sprints with Leezer, Steegmans or Hushovd but this year he will be the leader on the flat stages.
Well, Sagan won`t probably beat the others in a totally flat stage. But he is probably the best mix between top puncheur and top sprinter. So it will be interesting to see how he performs. He might have the disadvantage that Kreuziger could need his help.
Also one of the best sprinters one flat terrain but struggling on hilly stages. Graeme Brown from the Rabobank Team will have a good support by Oscar Freire, the former great Spanish sprinter.
As Kreuziger is more or less the only real contender for the Youth Ranking and to bet on the mountain ranking is also quite hard the next report will be stage 1.

After all the formalities a stage report again.
Hope I didn`t bore you too much
La Vuelta a Espana - Stage 1
Granada - Cogollos de la Vega
The Vuelta starts with a short timetrial but longer than a prologue.
Sanchez is definitely one of todays favourites. Other favourites are the timetrial specialists plus Contador and Wiggins.
Richie Porte is the first of the possible top 10 riders. He surprised all cycling experts last year with his WC coup. He will be in a great form this year, too after the Vuelta. I like the Milram shoes for Leopard - Trek. Should change this as fast as possible. Weird as I changed Saxobank and Leopard and not Milram.
17'12
The Danish champion Fuglsang will ride for our team next year. He beats his team mate by a few seconds.
17'05
(I hate these national Leopard jerseys as you see nothing of the flag from above)
Peter Velits improved quite well into a great allrounder. He could get a top 10 but with already 65 race days this will be hard for him.
17'25
Michael Rogers helped Gesink in the Tour but here he will the Rabobank`s leader. But his time could have been better.
17'16
Luis Leon Sanchez starts his first GT this season with big goals. He sets a new best time and beats all time trial specialists like Wyss, Elijzen or Westra. Great start for him. He also gains quite a lot time on many contenders.
16'28
Samuel Sanchez did quite good today. He seems to be in a good shape with a similar time than Fuglsang.
17'04
The British champion Bradley Wiggins also can`t beat Sanchez. He is 29s slower.
16'57
Frank Schleck is definitely not the best time trialist but therefore one of the strongest climbers. His time isn`t that bad for him.
17'19
He could be Contador`s biggest contender. The young Czech Kreuziger with the same time than Sanchez.
17'04
Just Contador can beat us now. But Sanchez at his season peak, not sure about Contador that late after a great season so far. He "just" finishes 5th and we can celebrate the first Vuelta win in 2011 and much earlier than expected. Contador was 22s slower than our leader but still the second of all favourites.
Especially Rogers seems to be in just average form or he just had a bad day.
The main fight for the overall will start in the mountains and there everything can change extremely quick.

Thanks all.
@ Tuco: Indeed this is in reality always a good bet like Moncoutie. Haven`t even realized that he took part here. But with +1'36 he is preparing something obviously. |

Exactly my thinking...
In reality, the KOM winner will more than likely be the overall winner. Seems to happen a lot in PCM unless the user goes for it.
Anyways, great start! |
