Congrats on the win Abi! Surprised these hilly stages turned out to be so sterile for the GC battle. Everything left to be decided on the TT and the Torre stage. Should be good news for us, let's see if we can make the most of it.
Thanks for all the great reports so far Sean!

Not sure why we paced, either. Very small gaps so far, surprising to see. But nice to see a win for the break for a change.
Thanks for the reports, seancoll!

That's something of note to take back from this race at least. Well done Shirota and great support from Ronaldo!
Thanks for the report sean!

Excellent riding from Van Poucke, just not rewarded.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Congratulations on a beautiful Japanese victory, Abhishek, making the sponsors proud!
Oxxo not really the most social team by just being at the front of the peloton and doing nothing, hopefully one day we also do stuff to make people like us But good to have Eastman protected throughout all those stages. Up to him to finish it with two good results now, he should have the domestiques to do it.
Thanks for the great report, sean!

Congrats to Abhi, definitely a nice win there!
Obviously disappointing for us to not get the breakaway back, although Schmid didn't seem to have the legs anyway. Finishing behind Valter and Yates on such a stage is fine, but he should be stronger than Pidcock... Would've been a good chance to take green imho (or at least to get past Rodenberg), but it wasn't to be.
Also really disappointed to see Darbellay not caring at all - I hope this will change, as he'll be our best positioned GC rider after the TT. I guess he might just stay in 8th place or move up to 7th, with Rodenberg and Schmid dropping, but Eastman moving past him.
Will be interesting to see how far Schmid drops down, and if he'll then join the breakaway on S8...
Thanks for the report!

Call it even for outsprinting him yesterday

Kamna really killing it. Bittersweet to see. He just loves this stage, having won it last year for us. Of course last year he had already fallent out of GC due to a horrible hilly stage, but then again last year Galta won for us.
Anyway, enough about last year. Galta was good but not great here. Time lost to Rodrigues, and staying behind Almeida, is unfortunate. But the gaps are still marginal, and it's gonna come down to tomorrow. The team overall looks in good form, so hopefully that plays—currently leading the team standings. Skjelmose has himself a nice depth GC position right now too. I think snatching white from Remco will be tough at this point, but it's not impossible.
Thanks for the report!

A small number of stage points with Daniel and Cabrera finishing 7th and 8th. First notable ride for us by Cabrera. With a good performance on a reasonably selective stage tomorrow we should be Ok but definitely going to be on the lower end of expectations.

Congrats to Abhi and roturn for the stage wins! Now it's clearly Phinneys race to lose. We can only hope for the GC riders to hold still at the final stage and Fastned giving it to the break - and for our riders to finally try to get into one for once ... Apart from Hodegs stage win Hadi was probably our first rider to even be mentioned in a report - for a provisional top 10 in the midst of a TT ...

A steeper loss than I'd anticipated to the rest of the field, top 10 GC might be too hard to achieve now sadly. Congrats to Roturn and thanks for the reports!

Can't ask for more than a Top 20 on the day from Uwizeyimana, good job. Top 30 might be in reach now with a good ride tomorrow. And again, hopefully we get someone in the breakaway, that would be lovely. Thanks for the report sean

I no longer wish for this happen. I demand it!
Huge result from Remco, but the gaps behind him aren't big so I expect him to drop quite a bit tomorrow. Hoping he can hang on for a top 10, but top 20 is more realistic.

Well, everything has more or less worked out as expected. Having brought a climbing squad to support Rodrigues I have to hope for a day on the spotlight. We have the upper hand to Galta and Almeida and trail Misbah and the all rounders, all within small margins. Given how dependendant we are on Stannard and Rodrigues this is definitely going to be one of the moments of the season for us.
That said, Phinney and Eastman look in form as they ever do and they should sweep the fiest two places. Congrats on the win, roturn. See you all tomorrow.

Hum... No, 6th place isn't what I expected from Rekita. But I guess I underestimated the two small bumps, and maybe the conditions also slightly changed, improving towards the end. Which would explain why Darbellay and Schmid posted some really good times given their skillset.
But yeah, given that it very likely wouldn't have changed anything to the Copenhagen result, I'll still take the handful of stage points from Rekita in prologue and ITT.
I can only agree with alex that the final stage now should be pretty unselective - however, just enough to shake off Evenepoel and Pidcock
No, in all seriousness, I can't expect the stage to be ridden as passive as last year, even though I'll happily take 3rd place on the day by Darbellay (like Cras last year). The field is far more competitive, though, so I'll just have to wait and see where Valentin will end up. Top 20 would be the minimum goal, Top 15 the expectation, and Top 10 the optimal case. Given the tiny gaps, he really needs a huge day, though.
I also wonder what Schmid will do. He's still 18th after the ITT, which is a massive effort. I'd love him to join the break, regardless of the GC, as I think it could be a great stage for him. Despite its length, the Torre isn't a very difficult climb, and in particular with the flat parts towards the top puncheurs could do well - at least some of them did last year.
Big congrats to Fastned, on paper the race should be in the bag now.
Thanks for the report!

Senni, Carboni and Warchol are all in a good position to give us some good depth scoring in GC. They just need to ride a proper mountain stage.

Good time trial from Eastman. Now let's hope the mountain stage is as selective as it should be

Thomas Pidcock my freaking man!!!! Who needs boring training all the way to 77MO and 80HI when you are on the podium of a stage race with Taylor Phinney and Ryan Eastman anyway? As the report quite rightly says, an unbelievable effort from our guy this week - not quite at his stage hunting best but a couple of incredibly gritty rides in the TT and on the final mountain to secure the GC podium. Fantastic stuff. More than makes up for Fouche's disappointment. Seemed like a solid ride from new man Pomoshnikov in support and would like to think Fouche did what he could drifting back from the breakaway too.
Congrats to roturn on the win and Nemo on second - new shiny toys bought after promotion doing what they are paid for which is good to see. I know teams you promote with often end up your rivals once again in the next division (especially in PT) but I have a lot of affection for all the teams in the cohort and so very much enjoy having the three of our teams on the podium early in the season
Thanks for the uniformly great reports seancoll, enjoyed the coverage a lot

Perfect last two stages from Phinney. Both times justifying the top rider status. And rare to have a rider in that position myself, so it's nice to see it's working out here.
It's just PTHC but I take GC, Points, 2 stage wins and 2 more podiums. Ideally Cras could have performed better but I guess reading that report, he was needed due to some dangerous riders in the break.
Thanks for the reports and congrats to the fellow promotion teams performing here. |
