Another one that I really don't get. It looked like Bertilsson was in an absolutely perfect position under the red kite. He didn't launch too early or anything, and he has more resistance than most of his competitors. Somehow a leadout from 65 sprint Sulvaran tired him out though, I just don't know how. At least we get a few points this time and we already have the stage win. But getting outscored by quite a few lesser sprinters in this race is certainly not ideal.
Anyway, congrats to Krisa and thanks for another great report. Bring on the mountains!
Maybe the two climbs in the first half of the stage cost too much energy for him? They're pretty long, and depending on how hard the pack pushed, Bertilsson could have suffered a lot with his abysmal climbing "skills". Plus, Pasqualon is slightly better on the hills, which may have made a difference with the short uphill section towards the finish line.
And yeah, being mentioned in the pre-stage favorites can always be helpful with PCM... I guess the very weak sprinter field (which is not that surprising, given that only 16 teams made the trip) definitely favors some really strange results.
But let's hope that the mountains AI works better than the sprint one - there's definitely some work to do on that...
Certainly possible you're right about the climbing hurting him. Bertilsson's mountain does hold him back. Still, I wouldn't expect climbing to favor Manarelli or Dakteris over him in any case, especially given their inferior resistance. It's also strange to Bertilsson not exploding off of Sulvaran's wheel, who is so inferior to him in a sprint, when guys behind easily make up more ground from just as far out.
But I digress. I told myself I wouldn't spend this year complaining about A.I., so I have to stop doing it, as it doesn't help anyone. Any bad luck is only my fault at this point since I had an offseason to adjust my roster, and instead focused even more on sprints.

Great to see Tibopino shows how it is done in Tachira - he does love this race!

It's disappointing that the first mountain stage wasn't very selective, hopefully the other ones give Ranaweera a chance to claw back some time on Pinot and move up from 4th GC

Quite a boring mountain stage indeed. Was hoping/thinking this should be the best stage for Marquez to make a difference, and I'm a bit afraid of the MTT and the coming mountain stages tbh. Let's hope I'm wrong though. Congratz sutty!

Really boring stage. I would have expected a tougher pace with the amount of firepower here. Nothing bad for us. Warbasse looked good and Fabbro seems to have improved. Eg a little less impressive. Otherwise not much to say. Congrats to sutty!

What a dull stage given the quality of climbers in the pack. We've seen those bunch mountain sprints way too often last year already, and the first mountain stage this year wasn't any better. Really hoping for more interesting stages to come!
Congrats to sutty for a rather unexpected win here, and thanks to jph for the report (actually, congrats to you for not falling asleep when reporting that one )

My goodness, Valens! Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected him to pull away from everyone else! To think he could have won that stage if not for Lovik, but who knows how the stage plays out then, so I don't want to complain at all. Congrats sutty, and I'll take boring stages like this any day, thank you very much

Congrats to Sutty and Krisa on a first stage win.
McCutcheon almost held on again, so clearly not that hard and certainly not that interesting.
Thanks JPH for the reports.

Not sure who's bright idea it was to have Inkelaar leading out VdS on Stage 5 He has the lowest flat and second lowest sprint of anyone on the team! We should've done better than 6th there.
That mountain stage was so disappointing. Hopefully the others aren't the same. Not sure why none of riders get into breaks despite falling behind in the GC...
Thanks for the reports jph

Solid TT by Ndayisenga, nothing to complain. Looking good for a Top 8 right now with potential for a Top 5, but still so much can happen in the final three stages. Would have liked to see a better performance by Hadi, but Top 20 is still in the cards, which would be phenomenal, though I doubt he can hold on to that.
Thanks for the reports jph, very enjoyable as always!

Wow, seems like Pinot is going to win every jersey he can win, somebody's on fire Great TT by Keinath as well, I hope Marquez can still overtake him in the mountains and enter the top-3, but it won't be easy. On the other hand I also hope Marquez can now hold onto this level of performance, it would be a shame to see him drop out of the top-5. Tonight is probably the last night of Manarelli in green, I hope he enjoys his last day in green for probably the rest of the season and his career

Pinot unbeatable here, congrats Aidan! Will be a massive race for you in terms of points, probably winning all bar the white jersey.
Really disappointed by Ranaweera, was hoping he could beat Tibopino in the TT to have a real GC fight. Now I don't see anyone really challenging the Frenchie.
But at least we'll have a good battle for 2nd, with 2nd to 5th place really close together - and maybe Warbasse could finally do something more useful, too. Or can Tryg play their numbers? Great position for them!
Thanks for another great report, jph

Strong ride by Keinath but Pinot simply stronger.
So the decline made Keinath only finish 2nd here as 13s is not a lot. In especially gaining ~30s on Ranaweera and more than a minute on more direct opponents, this is a potential podium for him, which is nice to get in races with the top2 around.
Disappointing performance by couple others incl. Warbasse or Novak or Kuss!
The gaps now should lead to interesting mountain stages and hopefully more attacks as on the first. In especially riders from Tryg or Sotto il sole and Carlsberg shoulld go for it now having 2 well placed riders each while I expect the strong Carrefour duo at only 16/19 to also improve now. |

Great ride from Keinath on that stage, as already mentioned by some. Would've been nice to just sneak the stage win there too Pinot simply too good, but the gap is still small. Hopefully Keinath stays attentive through the rest of the race. Good ride from Inkelaar too.
Congrats to aidan and thanks for the report

Wow! Great couple of stages foe Pinot. I was a bit worried about the MTT, but that was for nothing.
With Pinot on track to win all jerseys (besides u25), it’s our race to lose. Thanks guys for the congrats! We need every point we can squeeze out of Pinot if we are to do well this season.

Hey Nazaret finally decided to show up. Too bad it won't make much of difference now. I guess we hope for a top 10 overall for Carter Jones and breakaway wins for the rest of the tour.

Well that sucked for us. No excuse to be losing big time to guys with the same mountain and worse TT on a stage like today. Damn. And all 3 of our guys were lackluster. Top 5 goal is looking pretty much out of reach now unless Warbasse decides to show some form he hasn't all race.
Congrats to Aidan and thanks for the report.

STEFAN PETROVSKI!!!
What an awesome win
And not just the stage, Stefan takes the KOM jersey and jumps to 8th in GC I'm so happy to see my former rider doing well so early for his new team

I'm absolutely floored! What a great race so far from Valens. Very cool to see him be so aggressive and be rewarded for it. I'm also happy for my fellow newbie managers, showing off so far A complete rookie podium even on that stage
