Lecuisinier in no problems here is probably a good thing in terms of hoping he can do top 15. Up to 3rd in the U25 competition gives a point I guess, which is better than nothing. I hope he can go to 2nd after the TT, but many riders will be a lot better.
Had hoped for Koretzky to try something here, as it would normally suit him well. Especially when Swift keeps the jersey we have to do something soon, otherwise it's going to be a massive loss to Vesuvio. Sagan also seems dangerous, as he wants to attack.

Good third place for Bilbao. I'm also very happy Tenorio didn't get in any trouble what so ever. Hopefully he has a good day tomorrow in the TT aswell.

My team is looking strong, that's good for the mountain stages later on but first the ITT, were I have high hopes for Kritskiy!

Hilly stages seem to come in two varieties. This was a fairly calm one were GC guys sat together and allowed battle between breakaways and wheelsucking punchy men battle it out.
Venchi enjoying themselves with a shock win. Cunego showing some class too nice.

Solid from Guldhammer, as it's difficult to make the hills count when the racing goes like that. Chapeau to Cunego, though, strong enough to keep the bunch away.
Not really looking forward to the TT, minutes will definitely be lost for Guldhammer, hopefully he can do well according to his stats.
Congratulations to Sykkel_Freak! And with Phinney in the race, they must fancy two stage wins in a row.
Thanks for the report and the pace they're coming with, tsmoha! |

Nice try by Sagan, shame it did not work in the end. Superb to have Howard 3rd overall at least for one stage too, he is having a decent race, he could be dangerous later in the second week after the first mountain stages thankfully to his good MO attribute for a sprinter. Thanks for the report.

Just caught up with the first four reports, great read and great pace tsmoha, thanks!
So far so good for Metinvest, grabbing three top10 finishes with three different riders. Pluchkin always near the front, being attentive, that is what we want to see for now.
Now the first big stage coming and Pluchkin needs to focus on the TT, so he will not lose too much time on likes of Phinney, Gesink, Kritskiy and Tenorio, who are better chrono men. Just stay within striking distance before the mountains come.
Congrats to Pokerstars (x2), Vesuvio and Venchi for stage wins!

Abal performing well above his stats here, what a ride!
Huge gaps is probably a good thing in terms of opening up the race a bit, also.
Lecuisinier slightly underperformed here losing time on riders such as Jack Haig and Rasmus Guldhammer - The latter doesn't matter much as he isn't relevant in terms of the GC. Jack Haig takes the 3rd place in the U25 which is not good. I need Lecuisinier to overtake Fraile and Haig ASAP!
Also I would have liked for Vlatos to take a few points here, but it wasn't to be - And the competition is so tough that it's ok.
Dissapointing TT from Kritskiy, and I suspect that Gesink and Pluchkin can't be entirely happy about that time loss either.

So Pinot and Elissonde look set to lose 10 minutes plus just in the flat TTs... well I best hope they get in breaks then. |

Not sure I submitted my post yesterday, so to summarise: Shame to lose Stage 3 on the leadouts, nice to still lead after Stage 4, but would rather have seen puncheurs go crazy.
Some big gaps in the TT there. Phinney gaining an advantage keeps things interesting as he he does have a mountain disadvantage to many of his rivals.

Such a gaps, wow, much crazy.
Not a greatest day for Pluchkin, but it could have been even worse, see Kritskiy as example. Now the gap to Phinney is huge, Tenorio and Amador also with solid advantage, hopefully these sorts of gaps can be lowered and turned around in mountains. The race is even more interesting now.
Popkov with a great TT and insise top10 of GC now, cool. But the randomness is silly really.
Congrats Sykkel Freak and thanks for a nie report tsmoha.

This is already reminding me of 2013 Giro which Phinney managed to hold off Madrazo - the expectation of big Phinney crack in mountains. Not dissimilar to expectation of Ricco crack in mountains at 2015 Giro also.
Pluichkin has it all to do at the moment, last week Alps/Angiliru madness of course to come but there is that last day look flat chrono that has to be factored in throughout the race.
Performance of the day perhaps though is Abal - a couple of years ago he was outside podium contender but like guys like Dekker/Intxausti he has seen many names overtake him in pecking order. It is nice to see him up there at the moment certainly one to follow in mountains.
Memo to team - this Vuelta has been horrible in first week so far, it is time for someone to show something on next stage please! No real expectations but here is hoping.

I don't know what you're talking about , building and planning your team/season for example around Kritskiy, make the Vuelta his main target and train his TT stats for € 1,200,000 from 79 to 80, worked out perfect for me...

Very good stuff from Guldhammer, definitely overperforming, which is kind of crucial if he's going to land a top 10 here considering the quality in the peloton.
Also nice to see Stake Laengen do a strong TT. Admittedly he isn't strong enough to follow the 79-80 climbers in the mountains, but it would be cool to see him try and see if he can land a GC top 25 without breakaway help. Though, Guldhammer is our clear priority.
Huge gaps indeed, and Phinney delivering big times. Suspect he'll need all the time in the world in the mountains, but first another hilly stage, and another chance for Guldhammer.
Thanks for the report, tsmoha! |

Disappointed with that. Beaten by Abal, Tenorio (almost 30 seconds behind is quite bad), Amador (what?) and Dekker.
But when I look at Kritskiy, I know it could have been even worse.

While Phinney was way above the rest and Abal managed to surprise, i'm still very happy with that result. Tenorio opening some nice gaps to opponents who on paper should have been closer.

Very, very, very good ride Andrei!! Although that's a lot of time for Phinney to take.

Just caught up with the all the stages now. Surely a great start for the biggest sprinters Mohs and Swifty, both delivering and nice to see the flat stages actually gets decided between the fast men. Big shame to see wildcard Conta already so far off, hopefully go on some long range attacks like he does for fun in RL.
Well, that hilly stage should surely have delivered more gaps. Dissapointing for those bringing a puncheur but always a big risk considering the very limited amount of hilly stages this tour.
Abal in the TT though nice surprise. Phinney delivering as he should and nice to see my favourite for the race, Tenorio do a strong ride aswell. Shocking performance from Kritskiy though!
