Italy certainly isn't some black sheep. The higher the number of (junior) riders, the more likely it is that some of them dope. As far as I can tell, Italy still holds most professional riders in peloton, and surely there's a huge number of junior talents as well. Besides, isn't Italy a county with some of the most strict doping controls?
Which reminds me, cycling fans like to say that cycling has stricter and more frequent controls compared to other sports. This seems to hold true for various countries as well within cycling. No reason to bash Italian committes, who seem to be at least doing their job, when they catch dopers on a frequent basis. Contrary to some other nations it seems.
Basically quoting everything.
Pantani was a great example of this. The italian justice persecuted him for a long time. We easily shift from an extreme to another here... And it is sometimes frustrating.
I'm fairly sure that Pantani won't ever been persecuted in that way if he was f.e. Spanish.
We don't appreciate champions, but if they do something worng, well, we throw shit on them.
Brambilla was summoned by an Italian court for what is happened at the vuelta and probably will be sanctioned.
Will this happen to Rovny? No, of course. |

Well, the situation I know best is Czech and Slovak Republic. Second hand information from my aboard racing mates is that at least Poland, Germany and Italy are quite similar.
The substance topic is really generally much over the line to talk in the peloton. Personally, as an average performing rider, I have never been offered anything. Specifically, I've known a few riders were using testosterone (exceptionally popular amongst track riders). But in most cases I don't know specific substance (e.g. my doctor who was helping some guys with this always talks about "shit", of course never revealing what he is applying or to whom). So what is most popular amongst junior peloton - that I'm not really able to answer.
Did not expect to get into this debate, I just thought big part of us raced as juniors and are aware that this is the world we live in.
Mentioning Germany with Italy is hilarious. I'm not saying there's no doping among the German juniors, but i'm confident that the number is quite small. I've been racing with with some of the top riders and had teammates who did races for as part of the national team and they (=teammates) all said that the top German riders were clean.
Among Dutch riders, the use of asthma spray was common, doesn't mean they were doping, though. Italians had a bad reputation and Russians were rumoured to have a good "medical" support, too.
I don't want to be misunderstood. One or two of my friends talking what they know about situation in Germany is what I know, I didn't really wanted to say the level is similar to Italy. I can't compare it, only very few people can, because it's a topic nobody wants talk about and nobody does. Only the most stupid rider would share information about his programme with anyone but his doctor, trainer and closest team-mates.

One of the most accurate sentences I've read on this forum. People here seem to believe in what riders say about doping in news or in interviews. It's all BS.

Yup, that's a very good point. 90's standard? I can't believe that. But as clean as the media tries it make it? Not at all. |

What a fucking reputation
I can remember the exact thing, but once Totti said something like:
"It is only 99 % of the Italians the give the rest a bad reputation"
lol
Present:
Tinkoff-Saxo - AG2R - Colombian riders
Past:
Francisco Mancebo - Illes balears - Carlos Sastre - Kelme - Robbie McEwen

Will this suddenly and magically decrease performance of Maxim Iglinsky. Like it happened with Schleck brothers when Frank was tested positive |

I wouldn't be too surprised. |

But it's not like Maxim has done anything remotely noteworthy or suspicious since L-B-L 2012, so Maxim non-performing in future can't really be interpreted as a sign in my opinion since he's non-performing for two years now.

That was my thinking as well. He clearly "regressed" since LBL and will most likely continue like this becoming a domestique only. |

I remember how we were discussing those Iglinskiy/Gasparotto results in 2012, that we needed to wait a few years to see how credible they would be
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Only a month after his positive he is provisionally suspended. That's actually quite a good quick turnover. Chapeau UCI.

That was my first thought. It is such an amateur mistake.
