Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne
Welcome to the second day of the Belgian opening weekend. A second day means a second chance. Today we had two shots at the win: Roelandts and Greipel.
Much lesser cobblestone riders can win this, it's generally won by a strong sprinter. Let's see what we could do today.
After a heavy cobbled section, a major split occurred. Greipel missed it but most of the favorites had, too. Since we still had our team intact except for Greipel and Sieberg, we were instructed to increase the pace. Roelandts would be sprinting for the honors.
Omega Pharma - Quickstep had the same plan, so a couple of their riders and myself worked on the pace.
But with entering the local round, we got caught anyway. Which wasn't that bad for us, since now we had Greipel back!
The rest was up to Stijn...
Today the team gave me an amazing chance. I couldn't screw this up, this was too important. I was to lead-out Roelandts, who, in his turn, was to lead-out Greipel.
Turning the final corner, things were looking good. I was dying inside, but I kept going strong, I just needed to make it to 3km before the finish. Only 1 more!
I made one final sprinting acceleration to give Roelandts a flying lead-out.
Less than one km from the finish, Greipel and Boonen were fighting, head to head.
And Greipel made it! What a show of power! I couldn't believe it, and it feels so much sweeter to know I had a part in it!
I finished 28th, celebrating the brilliant team win! What a beautiful victory. Oh, and in case you were wondering, Willy finished 63th
Result
Well, this has been an amazing weekend. Yesterday I proved the team I have some strength on the cobblestones and that I can sprint fairly decent. Today I proved that I am a team player and that I'm not afraid of dirty, hard work. A second place and a victory is really great. Lotto Belisol is showing why it's one of the major game players in the cycling world. While my personal results are a great addition to my résumé, which can be viewed at the first post of our blog!
We'll see you in a couple of days, in West-Vlaanderen!

When is that break you were talking about. I can't keep up, just like Tale of Two.

Ian.... you need a life
Definitely improved over your other stories, always a good sign.
Starting stats seem better (if still a bit too high) just hope they dont progress too fast.
Nice use of humor, and more developed riders! I like it and for the first time i seem to like the riders as people.
Would have been nice to see a different team than Lotto, seems a bit samey. And a different name.
Overall a good start and i hope it gets better from here
...
oh, and there stats are all 85's of course!

baseballlover312: Well, it should be today. I've got to start up school work again, but it's not working that well
JuanMotr: He contributed his part, so that's great
PCM Rulezz: Thanks! It's always nice to do well in Belgium's opening weekend.
FreitasPCM: Thank you
sutty68: It was pretty close but we had complete confidence in Greipel
rogvi97: Thanks
TheManxMissile: Well, thanks for the feedback, let me provide you with some answers. The stats are lower and the difficulty's higher. The "problem" is, I seem to have grown in the game a lot and I'm real surprised to see these results with these stats. I'm just much better at PCM than I used to be.
Very glad to hear you like them as people, that's always important for me, it's nice that this time I actually succeeded
I would've liked something else than Lotto, too, but in the end I picked Lotto anyway. It's just the team I feel best with, I know the riders best, and it's one of the only teams that gives me motivation to play with. Motivation is just too important in a story, so I chose Lotto, hope you understand!
Thanks
Jakstar22: Thank you!
Thanks for the many great replies!! |

Ronde van West-Vlaanderen stage 1
A prologue, a heavy cobbled stage and a flat race. Three days of racing. We start with the prologue. Stijn doesn't like TT bikes and Willy likes his TT longer, so not the ideal race for the both of us!
Just 12km, the time differences will be important for the coming stages.
I'm more concerned about tomorrow, so I didn't give it 100% here.
Though I feel I'm growing quickly here in Lotto. Their training and equipment is so advanced. Maybe one day I'll be used to riding on these bikes! I finish 24th, not bad for me! But my real test will come tomorrow!
Both tomorrow and the day after aren't my profiles. So if I want to do something, it has to be done today. I raced for a top 10 place today.
There was quite some wind, and in the open fields in West-Flanders, you've nowhere to hide.
I was a bit off at the intermediate checkpoint, so I had to give it some extra for the second half.
Goal achieved, top 10!

The time differences are quite large already, but tomorrow will be much more decisive, a tough, hilled, cobbled profile. We'll see you there,

PCM rulezz: Thanks, I'll need it! Though the competition isn't very strong, so lucky there
sutty68: Well, he has some cobble stats, but I reckon the next stage will be all about Stijn (it's with more than 10 rounds on the same cobbled hill!)
JuanMotr: That would be very great, we'll see whether or not he can do it
Daggen:
Well, I haven't had access to my computer since this afternoon, so no more reports today. Hopefully I'll be able to finish West-Vlaanderen tomorrow
Thanks for following! |
