Tour of Qatar - Stage 3

img692.imageshack.us/img692/7624/69832200.jpg

The second sprint stage is about to beggin. We've learned some lessons from the stage yesterday and are ready to use our experience and great shape to get a great result.
I've removed J.Rojas as the greatest favourite, because of his poor performance yesterday which probably is due bad shape.

Stage favourites

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png B. Swift, D. Galymzyanov, J. Rojas

The morning break was a lot bigger than yesterday.
11 riders slipped away from the pack with some bigger names within.
The greatest rider was A. Davis (Skil - Shimano) who also tried to break free yesterday, and ended in 9th. Other worth to mention was Z. Dempster (UnitedHealthcare) and M. Brammeier (HTC)

The 11 big breakaway containing A. Davis

img190.imageshack.us/img190/4318/64383844.jpg

Because of the size of the break and the riders within, we feld it was necessary to help the leader Guardini's team, Katusha, to obtain our common interrest
- A mass sprint

Team EnergiFyn - TDC helping Katusha to catch the breakaway

img215.imageshack.us/img215/944/53857302.jpg

The gap between the breakaway was held down all the stage.
With 19 km to go it looked like a clear mass sprint with 1.30' to the break, but Simon Clarke (Astana) didn't wanted it to be that way and tried to attack

img442.imageshack.us/img442/2926/50411513.jpg

Clarke broke away from the other escapies who seemed tired after a long day. Clarke was therefore on a solo ride for the victory.
We first thought that he couldn't recist the high pace set by the pack, but we soon realized that he was becomed a serious threat for the victory.

In the pack we started to build up a leadout for Swift. In the front O'Grady who was setting a crazy speed, behind him Bellis as leadout for Swift just behind. Unfortunately Finetto couldn't catch the wheel of Bellis which was the plan, so instead he catched the wheel of Degenkolb (HTC) which also was a perfect position to be in

img337.imageshack.us/img337/5594/90248148.jpg

O'Grady draw himself to his maximum level and launched Bellis towards the finish with 2.5 km to go. This time Clarke was almost catched because of O'Grady's incredible performance.

In the front is Bellis, then Swift. After him it is J.Casper (Andalucia), J.Degenkolb (HTC), R. Ferrari (Spidertech) and Finetto

Bellis launches with Swift in his wheel

img528.imageshack.us/img528/1091/72364163.jpg

Bellis was still in front when the pack catched Clarke with just 1.5 km to go. This was the wakeup call for race leader A. Guardini (Katusha) who was quite far back when the sprint started, and now tried to go past L.Howard (Saur)

Bellis catches Clarke and A.Guardini attacks

img684.imageshack.us/img684/2998/47083894.jpg

Right before Bellis had done his job, J.Casper (Andalucia) stroke just before la flamme rouge. Therefore Swift decided to wait with his own attack and get into the slipstream of Casper

Swift waits and follows Casper

img231.imageshack.us/img231/9509/51001828.jpg

Guardini had overestimated his power and couldn't follow the pace. Therefore the victory had to be decided between these 4 riders.
Finetto goes past Degenkolb (HTC) with 800 metres left, while Swift also beggins to move aside to go past J.Casper (Andalucia)

Finetto and Swift trying their luck while going past the two other riders

img818.imageshack.us/img818/5341/46606082.jpg

Our two stars had timed their sprint perfectly. Due to a fantastic acceleration they both goes past the two other riders with Swift in front of Finetto

Swift and Finetto takes the lead

img24.imageshack.us/img24/2169/45840506.jpg

And they've done it!
Swift wins in front of Finetto with a fine gap to the closest followers.
Even though we didn't plan it like this, it worked perfectly and brought our first double this year - which also achieved our sponsor goal.
Congratulations guys!

Swift and Finetto makes a fantastic double!

Race evaluation

We couldn't be much happier than we are now.
We've got the perfect result and all the guys worked their asses off. Even though there grew some panic in the guys when Clarke was threatening and Finetto wasn't there to lead Swift, the guys kept their heads cool and won due their tactical abilities and their strong power.
The only thing which hopefully should be improved tomorrow, would be the leadout train where the perfect situation was to have Finetto to lead Swift.

We now got the leaders jersey to protect and therfore we surely are going to work a lot more, but i belive that the guys are ready to fulfill this task.

Tour of Qatar - Stage 4

img194.imageshack.us/img194/9650/52093187.jpg

It is a different day today. We have to use a lot of energy to control the gap between the pack and the break. This will probably result in a less stronger leadout for Swift - But lets see...

Guardini has kept his level really high and seems to be in very good shape, therefore he is still the main favourite.

Stage favourites

img207.imageshack.us/img207/5228/3starsm.png A. Guardini

img20.imageshack.us/img20/6002/2stars.png B. Bozik, T. Bos

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png B. Swift, D. Galymzyanov, J. Rojas

The final break wasn't made before we had ridden about 60 km of the stage. The breakaway contained only two riders: G. Kaupas (Differdange) and yesterdays fighter S. Clarke (Astana).
We controlled the breakaway all day long, sometimes with help from vacansoleil who for the first time sacrified anything for their main sprinter Borut Bozik.

The breakaway was under control all day long

img171.imageshack.us/img171/6901/23563194.jpg

The breakaway was catched with about 15 km to go.
Vacansoleil totally dominated the front in the final kilometres and it seemed like they were going all in for B.Bozik.
Our own team tried to find the space for a leadout train, but on the 5th last kilometre, our train was blocked and felt to pieces.
Finetto and O'Grady was long gone, while Bellis and Swift still managed to keep a spot in the front
At the same moment, Vacansoleil stroke forward with their 3-men leadout train with Bozik, followed by A. Guardini (Katusha)

Vacansoleil and Guardini strikes

img209.imageshack.us/img209/385/30181490.jpg

Swift and Bellis was blocked in the pack and couldn't get out, but luckily Swift saw the wheel of Degenkolb (HTC) and tried to follow while Bellis couldn't help anymore and drew back in the pack

Swift finds the wheel of John Degenkolb

img408.imageshack.us/img408/8717/14672921.jpg

The Vacansoleil leadouter started the sprint.
Left in the road are Vacansoleil with Bozik and with A.Guardini behind. While right in the road are T.Bos (Euskatel) who had no leadout with Degenkolb (HTC) and J.Casper (Andalucia) and Swift in his wheel

Swift placed behind J. Casper while the final sprint starts

img412.imageshack.us/img412/3527/80064104.jpg

Bozik launched his sprint quite early with Guardini comfortably in his wheel.
J.Casper (Andalucia) decided to go left around the other riders and leave Degenkolb's wheel, with Swift right behind

Casper goes left and Swift follows

img829.imageshack.us/img829/5779/72424024.jpg

Casper wasn't simply strong enough to make it all way, therefore Swift decided to leave his wheel in exactly the same time as Guardini left Bozik's wheel - In the right side of the road Degenkolb makes a strong acceleration

Swift leaves Casper's wheel. So does Guardini who leaves Bozik

img560.imageshack.us/img560/9049/72350118.jpg

Swift came fast on the left side, but Guardini already seemed quite secure on his win. But what was more interresting was the fight for the last podium spots and thereby important bonus seconds.
T. Bos came very strong on the last final metres, while Degenkolb lost more and more power in his pedalstrokes - But with the speed Swift generated, he could certainly also have the podium in his line of sight

Guardini seems secure on his victory while Bos, Degenkolb and Swift fights for the remaining podium spotsr

img201.imageshack.us/img201/2720/93174259.jpg

Guardini wins another brilliant victory, he used no team to get him in the right position and no one to do leadout - He managed it all by himself, what a fantastic ride by him.

But what about the last podium spots? Did Swift manage to overcome Degenkolb and Bos? - Look down bellow

Guardini beautifully takes his second stage victory in the race

Race evaluation

Sadly we lost the leaders jersey today. I'm actually quite pleased about Swift's performance today, he did the sprint on his very own and almost got a podium spot.
The big disappointment was though, that our leadout train failed for the second time. We have two stages left and if we want to win this race, we'll probably have to change our tactics.

Another very good sprint by Swifty! Too bad, you lost the lead, but Qatar is always unpredictable in case of sprint-trains and things like that Wink Good luck!

From the warm and windy deserts in Qatar, another part of the team have travelled their way into the southern France with some more cold.
Alongside with the 2 last stages of Tour of Qatar, Le Tour Meditarraneen will run and follow the coasts of the mediterranean sea. The route is going to be quite hilly and the last and final queen stage up to Mont Faron will be very crucial for the outcome of the race.

The two last years the race have been won by Phillipe Gilbert both times, and this year will be no exeption, since he's on the startlist this year too go for the hattrick.

The Team
img841.imageshack.us/img841/531/teamju.jpg

We've brought a very skilled team for this race.
We got Dario Cataldo as our main leader. His force will be his climbing abilty on the last queen stage which may bring him the victory.
But a very tough startlist is made, so we are prepared for every situations.

Niki Østergaard is a perfect man for these kind of stages which ends in a flat sprint. He will ride his own chances completely independent from other duties. Also Sep Vanmarcke is going to play a major role on our team. This race is going to be the first race for him in the team, and because of his allround abilties we'll also count for him making a good result.

Tour Meditarraneen - Stage 1

img818.imageshack.us/img818/9462/50563633.jpg

First day of the french stage race is about to begin. It's not the most hilly stage of them all, but still there are some bigger climbs on the route.
It seems like a flat finish, but maybe it's gonna be more uphill than what it seems to be.

Stage favourites

img207.imageshack.us/img207/5228/3starsm.png P. Gilbert

The morning break got away early and the pack didn't seem to react on the riders within it. The break contained 10 riders where the biggest names were D. Rebellin (Colnago), S. Delfosse (Wallonie Bruxelles) and J. Tombak (Onda). Also our own David Veilleux got away to make some pressure on Omega Pharma

The breakaway contained 10 riders including D. Veilleux

img821.imageshack.us/img821/5040/17722635.jpg

The pack which basically was leaded by Omega Pharma seemed to have the break under control the whole day. But when the breakaway reached the most crucial kilometres of the stage, their speed was too high for the pack to catch them. Therefore the win was to be decided in the breakaway.

With 2.5 km left, N. Bazin (Auber) attacked and got a fine gap. V. Dos Santos (LA) tried to go after him and D. Veilleux thereby saw his chance of a good position for the final sprint

N. Bazin (Auber) attacks in the final kilometres, while Veilleux tries to find a good position

img824.imageshack.us/img824/8927/54518742.jpg

N. Bazin got caught right after and Dos Santos ran dry on energy, therefore he fell back and thereby unfortunately blocked Veilleux.
Veilleux was therefore in a very bad position when they got into the final kilometre

Veilleux unfortunately got blocked and had to start the sprint in a bad position

img687.imageshack.us/img687/5768/18955729.jpg

Veilleux feld really good, but he couldn't get past the riders in front of him because there wasn't enough space for him

Veilleux couldn't get past the other riders

img810.imageshack.us/img810/5554/73306456.jpg

Janek Tombak (Onda) wins in front of A. Shchebelin (Bretagne) and D. Rebellin (Colnago).
David Veilleux unfortunately just missed the podium and ended in 4th

Tombak wins and Veilleux comes in 4th

img818.imageshack.us/img818/44/67752596.jpg

2'38 after Tombak crossed the line, the pack came in. The only thing left to sprint for was some minor sprint points, so for our team only Østergaard tried to sprint. But it was no surprise who came in first - of course it was World Champion Phillipe Gilbert!

Race evaluation

Unfortunately David didn't win today, even though i think he was the strongest in the breakaway. But When we look back now, then it's clever not to have the leaders jersey so early in the race, because we therefore had to use too much power on defending it.
The most posetive thing today was the fact that we've now got Omega Pharma under pressure and they thereby have to take initiative to break away to gain some time.

Unfortunate that Veilleux got blocked in the sprint for the line, still 4th is a creditable finishSmile

@Sutty68, yeah unfortunately and I agree with you that it is a creditable result - It's going to be fun to see how the race will develop

Tour of Qatar - Stage 5

img440.imageshack.us/img440/1024/31042723.jpg

The 5th stage of the Tour of Qatar is going to be the second last stage.
We have had some unlucky moments with our leadout trains for Swift and Finetto, and therefore we've thought that the only way to make a overall win possible, is to change our tactics.

Stage favourites

img207.imageshack.us/img207/5228/3starsm.png A. Guardini

img20.imageshack.us/img20/6002/2stars.png B. Bozik, T. Bos

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png B. Swift, D. Galymzyanov, J. Rojas

The morning break today contained 9 men including some great names like: P. McDonald (UnitedHealthcare), J. Bauer (Endura) and R. Mandri (Endura)

The breakaway containing 9 riders

img211.imageshack.us/img211/2392/80489759.jpg

When I said that we've changed our tactics, this was one of our plans. With 45 km to go M. Santambrogio (Astana) attacked and O'Grady followed him

O'Grady on the attack with 45 km to go

img337.imageshack.us/img337/8751/31974793.jpg

We thought that this attack could bring some panic in the pack and we could benefit on that, but sadly all the teams wanted O'Grady to be catched right away, so he was catched with 19 km to go.

Therefore it came down to another mass sprint.
Also here we had changed our tactics. With our non succesfull leadout trains, we thought that contra sprinting was the way to go.
Swift and Finetto found each a wheel to follow. Swift found the biggest favourite of them all, race leader A. Guardini (Katusha) and Finetto got in the wheel of Vacansoleil's B. Bozik

Swift and Finetto in great positions

img443.imageshack.us/img443/4805/65986096.jpg

But we seemed to have no luck on our side, since both Bozik and Guardini waited in ages to sprint, while we just sat in their wheels and thought they would sprint

Guardini and Bozik waiting to sprint

img440.imageshack.us/img440/7928/46977187.jpg

Finally they began to sprint, but it was too late since Rojas (Movistar) came powering from behind and Guardini's leadout man blocked Swift

Swift and Finetto is caught behind

img64.imageshack.us/img64/8176/93522497.jpg

A nice win for Rojas who for the first time shows his abilities.
Guardini comes second and Bozik third, while Finetto finishes 5th and Swift 10th

Rojas wins his first victory this year

Race evaluation

Our tactic didn't unfortunately work the way we wanted it to do. But we just have to admit that almost all riders in the race are at a very high and same niveau. The win seems impossible to reach, but we will fight for the second place on tomorrows final stage.
