Act 10: The Final Act
Scene 12: Win or Lose, Part XII
Sep did have one heck of kick on him, but not if we could exhaust his reserves and Thomas' was even better. Both Johan and I could outsprint them 90 times out of 100. But in front of this fanatical crowd, on his Seps turf? Neither of us were certain of anything anymore. The immediate need was for co-operation and maintaining out lead.
Hitting the bottom of the decent it was roughly 25”. Not much but enough to press on with. We were around a couple of corners and out of immediate eye-sight. A huge advantage in cycle racing. It forced the chasers into overdrive and if you could last long enough then they would capitulate and hand you the win.
It was a tense and desparate 5km through the Beglian countryside. Hitting the final 10km the motocamera held up a time gap. 55 seconds. Not a big gap but the consensus is 1minute per 10km is a good chase. A reduced and tired chase needed more. We were in the controling seat now. Hold our pace and medals were assured for all but one of us...

@ALL - Thanks for commenting guys. I know i don't reply a lot but i don't have anything to say but thanks. Did some fiddling over the weekend to tidy up the coming scenes somewhat so they are a lot better now. Tomorrow the Worlds shal surpass the TDF as "longest race" in the story, which is kinda cool!
Act 10: The Final Act
Scene 13: Win or Lose, Part XIII
Vanmarckeand Thomas knew the score. It was 2vs1vs1 and the impotus was on Johan and I to set the pace and go for glory. The final cobbled section passed underneath with 3km to go. We all survived it easily, it was only 2-star catagorised. Coming off the far side we actually increased out lead to 1'10”. It was us Four for Gold.
I could practically hear the commentators in my head. Talking about how I was willing to dive about and do anything for a victory. How Johan wasn't a real classics rider and shouldn't be there. That Vanmarcke was at home and should take this easily. You could almost overlook Geraint. It felt like the Hammarlings vs. Flanders to me!
Those final 3km were entirely flat. We cut from main-road to main-road heading into town. Wide boulevards offred no protection from wind and no chances to escape. The distance slipped away and Johan and I took turns relaying. We were rapidly coming up on 1000m to go and I whispered into my radio...
“Under the Kite i'm going to launch a 100% attack. They will follow my and you have to stay within 50m of them! They will both tire and fade after 500m, leaving it open for you....”

Act 10: The Final Act
Scene 14: Win or Lose, Part XIV
Thus it came to pass. The red Kite flashed over head and I opened my sprint. Sep Vanmarcke jumped hard onto my wheel, Thomas being him. I couldn't look around and just had to hope Johan followed my instructions. From here I had to go as hard as I could right up to the line.
I could slowly feel Vanmarcke dropping away from my back wheel but Thomas was coming closer. It got slowly easier to sprint without Sep increaseing my drag. Also I noticed Johan wasn't sweeping past my outsied. 500 meters to go and he still hadn't come around. I was worried but knew it was too late to wait. It was to be a Hammarling victory, but which one...
300 meters and the defaning roar of the crowed convinced me Vanmarcke was making a come-back. I dared cast a glimpse bakwards under my shoulder. This was a career defining moment. Presumptuous, but an era defining moment. I was leading by 50m over Vanmarcke and 20m over Thomas, and they looked defeated... Johan I couldn't see...

@ALL - Full disclosure, things get a bit soppy/ridiculous/personal from here on in
Act 10: The Final Act
Scene 15: Win or Lose, Part XV
Three-hundred meteres felt impossibly long. I'd been red-zoning it for 700 already and was completely spent having forced the winning move. But it was 300m I couldn't let up on matter how much I wanted. It flew past at unbelievable speed, yet it took forever as images came to my mind.
I could see Johan and Kristian. I could see Mikel in the team car. Hannah by a TV screen. Lucy by her own TV screen with Erik. Phil still out on the road for Ireland. Natalie watching the race live. The team listening to the radio hoping for the result. I could feel my parents looking down swelling with pride.
Giving one final look around it was as if I could pick out there faces lining the barriers, and more amongst them. Wilco, Christe, Henig, Luke, Rudy... even Malcolm and yet more. Time to throw off the past and the ghosts. Time to make someone else feel a little better.

@hoyle - You should know by now not to expect anything normal
Act 10: The Final Act
Scene 16: Win or Lose, Part XVI
A screech of brakes.... I grabbed hard on the levers, almost catapulting myself forwards in the process. I couldn't bring myself to cross the line in first place, skidding barely 20meters short of the stripe in the road. Even before the crowd could react Johan shot past to win the race.
He didn't raise arms in celebration. Neither did Thoms or Vanmarcke react to their medal places. Events were unfolding so fast no-one could react. Cameras were trained on my near stationary figure. Slowly I released the levers and rolled over the line to take fourth, no medal. The final moment of my Worlds race was to gesture upwards, my personal tribute.
