Oh, that is so far from the truth
Really? Most the Cycling media seem to love him, nearly everyone around here (outside of today in this thread) always seem to say nice stuff about him. He wins, they are like awesome job etc etc rather then OMFG HIS A DOPE FIEND!
Today is basically the first time I see bad stuff about him. But yeah, even if he isnt that popular, I still say the hate today is more about people liking and wanting Martin to win rather then disliking Sparty.
I don't like him much, he's quite a big hypocrite actually.
But he was fully entitled to do his job today and to catch Martin if he could.
Really, what would offend Martin would be to grant him a win he wouldn't have gotten without the mercy of his opponents.
Regarding Martin, that was one hell of a ride, but nothing for history books, not in the best chapters at least. It takes either a strategic race, either a move of great tactical importance for that. Merckx launching and bringing home (despite being outsprinted) a stage long attack with a two minutes lead after losing time the day before in 1971 was one of those performances we're still talking about 40+ years later.
Breaks being reeled in in the last km occurs every now and then. In the last 10 or 20 m it's of course much more rare, but I'm not sure it's exceptional, though I can't recall any other one. |

Like... it was a great ride from Martin but let's not overstate it. This wasn't Coppi in the 1946 Milan-San Remo or anything. The whole discussion was pointless since you did not quote him correctly. Well done calling somebody ridiculous when in fact you are acting ridiculously.
What did he say? |

He's quite fast guy, but not a sprinter. He said himself today that he really doesn't like the sprinting part (pushing each other at a very high speeed), so he didn't have a very good position today, but he was lucky to pick the right train (Cance). Furthermore he said he just wanted to see what he could do, not expecting a win. I don't believe we will see him dominate the sprints, his sprint is like Matti Brechels if I should compare him to someone else |

I apologise it appears he said "of any grand tour at any time in history."
Still an overstatement but the quote was wrong.

He did not stop, he went for lunge to the line. That's what sprinter does in last few meters of a sprint. |

Still it felt kind of different. Maybe nothing like Merckx' effort (his name means more in the history than Martin's, so his efforts have the edge of being remembered), but it was a 175 solo or something and that's quite an effort. I think this stage would've been remembered for many years to come if he'd won it. But then again, I'm not sure it also depends on how well Martin will be remembered. |

Also interesting is the top 10... barely any sprinter could perform. Mostly it was toughened flat and classics rider.
I think it's because of the huge speeds they had to ride at just to catch Tony, and this demonstrates how FL and RES should be handled in PCM.
Not give every sprinter a top FL and RES stat, because when push comes to shove, 80% of the sprinters will just be destroyed by the truly strong flat riders. |

Very true. That's why Boonen rules in Qatar, even if other top sprinters are there. He's a beast flat rider. |

Given that Matthews is in the points jersey they will almost certainly work for him today. Also this quote hints at it:
https://greenedgec...-la-vuelta
“There are still something like ten hilltop finishes left in the race,” Wilson explained. “If you do a quick calculation, it’s pretty clear the point jersey is going to go to a climber rather than a sprinter. That said, you never know. Maybe Matthews will do well on three or four more stages and remain in contention. At this stage, it’s not something we’ll look to defend, but it’s certainly nice to have for now.”
So it sounds like they are working for him 100%.

Tomorrow we'll see a bit of that. Then Monday and especially tuesday (ITT) there will be more gaps between those for sure. |

They would be foolish to work for anyone other than Matthews, in form and in my opinion a bigger talent than Howard
