Season 9 is in the books. Thanks again to everyone that voted and helped in deciding this year's PCM.Daily Favourite Cyclist. This competition doesn't work without your input. Before announcing the winner, a few notes I'd like to share:
- There was one tie, helping 11 Ruben Guerreiro get through the first round.
- 2 Thomas De Gendt received the most votes during a single match-up with 27 (twice) in his first round win over 15 Ion Izagirre and in the second round against 10 Richard Carapaz.
- The biggest surprise was 14 Bauke Mollema reaching the Round of 16, or all the No. 1 seeds get knocked out before the semifinals.
- 17 votes were cast in the Finals to crown another champion.
2 Thomas De Gendt Vs. 2 Andre Greipel
Your 2018 PCM.Daily Favourite Cyclist is...
Spoiler
* ANDRE GREIPEL *
He defeats teammate Thomas De Gendt: 9-8.
Yes, by a single vote - the closest margin of victory in a final ever.
The Gorilla sprints to his first crown after failing to reach the podium multiple times. While he didn't have to take down two-time defending champion Peter Sagan to do it, his road to the title featured some heavy hitters in De Gendt, Romain Bardet and Tim Wellens.
Greipel was one vote away from a tie with Taylor Phinney in Round 2.
He would have lost the tiebreaker, but he survived and kept fighting.
This was a sprint Greipel was determined to win.
He joins Sagan and fellow countryman Marcel Kittel as the three sprinters to win the conpetition. The fast men have won four out of the last five contests. The baton has been passed off to Greipel.
Congratulations to The Gorilla!

I'll see you all again next year for Season 10 (!) to crown another winner!

Never been a big fan of Greipel, but actually nice to see some diversity on our favourite cyclists year from year. Congratulations to him. |

Thanks for running the competition. He was my number 1 nomination so good to see him come through.
I view it as a life-time achievement award for Greipel. I went to the Richmond Worlds and seemed like he was on the front every lap riding for Degenkolb. He is always willing to work hard for others when it isn't his day. |

Am I right in saying the participation drastically declined this year? Any stats on that?

A don't have exact numbers, but yes participation has been on a steady decline since like Season 6. Only 17 votes in the Final was extremely low. Sad to see.

I'll explain why I didn't vote since the semifinal: I couldn't choose and didn't care which of the 4 semifinalists won

I felt like this was the best casted since I participated except for opening votes and the final
what a cool winner, didn't recognize that the finale was ongoing but would've voted for the GORILLA as well

something like this, also the pace was quite high, hard to not miss out on some rounds.

I totally missed the final, imo you can't complain about the lack of votes if you don't give a bit of extra time for the most important round of the game, my vote would've tied it up for De Gendt, a shame he lost because of that.

Yeah, the final would have deserved an extra day or two, I think. I didn't help Greipel win, I had to go with De Gendt, but I'm pleased for him nonetheless.
