I'm not saying it's case here, but if you're paid to be the lead out for another guy, no matter that you're faster or not, or if you're just, say, 0,01" slower on 200 m, you'll be the lead out guy, no matter what.
Given that, how should your n°1 sprinter necessarily win when you finish 3rd ?
Then, I didn't see the sprint, maybe you haven't either. We don't know who got boxed, who sprinted in the wind, etc. |

Also let's say if your lead out gets 3rd when leading out (so a lot more effort) indeed really difficult for your sprinter not to win (ex Cav and Renshaw, Champs Elysee 2009).
But of course, without the sprinter in sights, the lead out was now the sprinter... of course he tried taking wheels, not leading out through the whole last kilometer.

We'll never know if Bos had won it if he were in the right position. Fact is Steegmans was by far the strongest of the remaining sprinters. So I'm not so sure about that.
