So, after being relatively absent for the last two weeks due to a full time vacation job I'll be completely absent for the next three weeks as I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow. I might check Skype once every now and then (note the word might), so if you really need me for something, which I find unlikely Pfft), try there.

For you UK peeps (primarily): I watched Horizon tonight and their episode on Doping in Sport. I can highly recommend it, primarily because it was focused on the amateur and general public doping in a more casual way. Really interesting data and insight that avoids the cliche focuses on elite athletes (still there at times but only in passing, and even then still interesting).
It finished off with a great few minutes looking at gene doping (Schwarzenegger mice, scary shit) and Trans-Cranial Electrical Stimulation (electrifying your brain to increase your pain threashold). Neither of which are particularly banned yet, and certainly the TES is being used and has significant impacts.
Get in iPlayer to catch up, well worth your time.

So a bad start to the day for me.

Yesterday I went over to a friends house to sleep over with a bunch of friends. This friend lives like 2-3 miles from my house, so I figured I would bike there to get some exercise and save some gas money. Well, that was a mistake.

I got there fine and it was all good, but this morning was not as fun. As I was just leaving my friends house, maybe 3-4 houses down the road, the strap of my backpack where I was carrying my sleeping back snapped. I tried to carry it for a minute and put it on my lap, but that made it very hard to ride, and long story short to avoid traffic I veered to the side of the road, hit a stone wall and crashed.

I was pretty much okay. I have scrapes and bruises but otherwise I'm fine; it wasn't a high speed crash. My bike on the other hand, is not so great. For perspective I have a Cannondale hybrid. So I took a look at it and immediately is was bad. I really don't know much about bikes and how to adjust or fix them, so I knew I was screwed.

The back wheel wasn't even spinning for the first half mile or so. I couldn't figure out why, but then I realized that the back of the frame on the side opposite of the chain was not even positioned in the wheel socked. After a few attempts I was finally able to get that straight so the wheel would at least roll, but the chain was still screwed up so I couldn't pedal if I was going to ride it.

So I made the trek home for the 3 miles or so, and finally made it. The 35 degree heat made it way worse than it would have been otherwise, as did the fact that I got 2 hours of sleep last night as my friends and I were hanging out till 6 in the morning or so.

When I finally got back to my house my dad and I assessed the damage. We were able to fix the chain, it had just dropped and become tangled in the crash. The back wheel is back in the socket, but my front tire is completely flat, which makes sense since that 's where I hit the wall. But worst of all, my back brakes seemed locked. They are stuck up against the rubber and the handbrakes only can close them a little more. We don't know for sure but it seems like the frame could have been bent in just a little from the crash, but enough to mess up the brakes completely.

The bike shop I bought it at 4-5 years ago closed down, and it's Sunday so no one will be open later anyway. Looks like I'll have to figure out where to take it tomorrow to be checked out. Not sure I have the money to get it fixed anyway if it's serious. Stupid situation and poorly timed as I've just been getting into riding daily the last month or so and really seeing progress.

So yeah, it's noon and I haven't really had a spectacular start to the day.

Shitty, but if it is very expensive to fix perhaps it could be a fun summer project to try and fix yourself with the help of the internet? And then you would have a lot more knowledge on fixing bikes.

Hopefully the problem is sorted in the end though anyway!

A good idea for sure, I'm going to have it at least checked out for a diagnosis but the actually fixing may become a learning experience.

Thats smart. I always wanted to work in a bike shop when I was younger, but never really got around to it, and probably didn't have the experience or skills for it anyway, but it was a dream and whenever my bikes broke I just got someone else to fix them anyway Pfft
