Quite some work to do for Marquez to make up the current deficit. Hopefully some breakaway appearances from the others are also in store. A shame that Wippert wasn't strong enough to compete on Stage after the climbs.
Stage 6 went more or less as expected.

Alright, I'll take the podium from Kragh Andersen. I admit I should have tempered my expectations for him more beforehand, given the amount of sprinters here, and the randomness of the sprints. I should consider myself lucky AKA has at least been consistently sprinting. The game decided a guy like Marco Haller isn't even trying half the time, and that's really unfair for Kraftwerk. So while I wanted a first week win, at least we've gotten consistent minor placings.
What does suck is that AKA's race is basically done. I'm hoping he makes it to stage 12, but he very well may not, and almost certainly will be OTL before stage 21. But that's the breaks when you put a sprinter in a GT.
Now for the mountains. It's Warbasse's weak point, so I'm hoping he has a good day and can be near the best, even if he can't match their accelerations. He is priority #1 now.

Wow, Aberasturi, that's a very welcome victory and important 25 points in. Let's see if we can get any more podiums.
I love the 2 reports a day-pace jph, fantastic job! |

Really interesting to have former rider Warbasse taking the lead of the race what a step! Shikai loosing time was a big surprise, only a few seconds to Machado but he's done well, never one to take a win but he's always there and thereabouts, sitting 6th rn is in the expectations, he looks good though and so does the team so there's definetely room to move even further.

I really thought Warbasse had the stage there for a second, and Berhane just pipped him. Congrats to ISA on a great victory! Always fun duking it out with our amateur partners.
But WOW. That was unexpected. My focus has been on Warbasse limiting his losses. I never expected to see him on such good form as to actually excel in the mountains over guys like Reis and Shikai. And to take the race lead? That's just something I never imagined in my wildest dreams. Sometimes it feels like the home nation bonus actually is real.
So now we have the yellow jersey. I'm not entertaining any aspirations of winning this race at the moment; I still believe Warbasse will falter against the big guns at some point, especially since his recovery isn't great for the final week. But we are in the best possible position for a good GC result now, and we've gained significant buffers of time on some of our competitors. Time to push forward. In theory, tomorrow should be good for us with Warbasse's versatility, but you never know how the pace of the day and everything affects him and others.
It was good to see Garby being productive today too, going in the break and not totally cracking at the end. Fabbro continues to look good this year, and has moved up to 2nd in U25, which hopefully he can keep throughout. AKA finishing so far down is definitely a little worrying for him to get to stage 12 though.
It will be interesting generally to see how my team deals with having the leaders jersey. On paper I think we have the firepower with Garby, Fabbro, Bjelkmark and even Foss to control the race. But it's been a long time since my team has been in this position in the mountains - maybe only 2016 Garby - so I'm not sure what to expect.
Thanks for the great report! Looking forward to good competition going forward.

Shikai and Warbasse with an epic fight and very tight behind them, with De La Cruz now on the podium. Even if he falls down to a 5th place in the end, that's an amazing result for us, please continue your form Davide! |

If only Senni wasted less energy the previous stages, the podium was within reach.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Brilliant to see Warbasse in the jersey! Just when you think Carlsberg should be dead and gone and a sure team to go down to the CT, they put up this. Sensational!
Also Lierse flying high these days, with Waeytens doing his thing in Balkans, and then Senni's win here. Congratulations to both managers.
Must say I also enjoyed stage 11 a little bit extra with Foss being a key domestique for Warbasse, coming home third of the Carlsberg riders. Hopefully he can have a day here and there where he can contribute and help out his leader.
This race has been very interesting so far, and the GC is tight. Surely stage 12 and 13 will shake things up, and whoever proves strongest there must be considered the overall favourite too, I think.
Thank you for your great coverage, jph27! |

Kraftwerk are leading the team competition with 4 in the top 20 which is great but there have been signs of weakness.
Nerz dropping out of the top 10 is a bit worrying, I need him to hang with the leaders on the mountain top finishes as he is not going to make up time in the time trial.
Teklehaimanot lost too much time on stage 8 as well.
Congrats to Lierse & ISA and thanks for the reports jph.

Well that was unexpected. Seeing Reis at the back with the rest of the team at the start of the climb on stage 8 almost gave me an ulcer, but as jph wisely wrote, the end result actually was sympathetic to us. I hope his usual prominence in the third week comes back to erase this sort of performance.
Great victory for Berhane though. MArquez looked well too. The GC is getting interesting. Congrats on the wins, scorchio and Olfardh!
And thanks once again for the incredible reports jph!

Of course sad to loose the GC-podium that quick, but also well deserved after brilliant racing by Senni. Tonights mountain stage is gonna be so exciting!
Thank you jph! |

Two good stages from Marquez. Just waiting for it all to fall apart somewhere, as has been the theme of the season...

It wasn't a true hill stage like I might have hoped, but it was a very good day for Warbasse in the jersey overall. Another top 5, only bonus seconds lost. Stage 10 will be huge though, and will surely shape how the second half of this race shapes up. We have to be alert!

Scarponi looked really strong today, good to see him getting up to 2nd in the KOM standings, hopefully he will make a move to try and take the jersey in the days ahead.
Seeing Ranaweera come home 2nd on the stage was really nice, helped him jump up to 8th GC, think he was 10th going into the stage, and his gap in the U25 is massive and not in danger so glad to seemingly have that one wrapped up early.
Only downside is that we have lost the team standings lead, it's not much but every point is always useful.

Rakuten really looking like a team that will end up utilizing ToA as a stepping stone for promotion to PT at this rate.
