Sometimes I wonder if it would be fun to see someone like Valverde or Purito go against real sprinters in a somewhat steep finish.

Valverde is even faster. Didn't he beat Freire on one or even two flat stages in Pais Vasco a couple of years ago? Sure, Pais Vasco stages are rarely pan flat, but still. He can really compete with the sprinters on harder finishes.
Or just look at the post above for another excellent example.

To use Fred Grappe (FDJeux coach), on a finish like today's, you need three things :
- high resistance to lactic acid (and he names Gilbert and J-Rod the best two in the world at that)
- a high VO2 (shall I explain what it is ?)
- a good W/kg ratio
Depending on how steep the final climb is, there's a balance point (in terms of slope percentage) between sprinter X or Y and puncher W or Z.
Bouhanni came 7th right behind Valverde today, which shows that not all sprinters can equally cope with uphill sprint finish, but that some of them might still cope with them.
Just watched todays stage..this is just has been great Vuelta. Even today..race leader atacked.
I just love Purito..he knows where he is best. And he keep on using this advantage. P.s. he is only Katusha big money signing who been shining every season.
He was lucky to get great form Gilbert with him.
So Far it has been a very enjoyable n exiciting VEULTA.9 stages have provided more excitement then the entire TDF.PURITO was great today.BTW is he any good @ TT????

He's worked with TT specialist Michael Rich to improve it and he's improved tremendously. And half this TT is climb or downhill.
He finished 5th in the hilly TT at the tour of the basque country this year that had about as much flat as this one. 16 seconds behind Tony Martin.
He started the Giro final TT too slow because he was afraid of going too fast and blowing up after a bunch of consecutive huge mountain stages, but in the 2nd half when he realized he wasn't tired he only lost like 5 seconds only to Hesjedal.
He's much better this year, trust me
EDIT: There's a chance he might only lose red for a day and take it right back the next if he does a good TT, trust me.

TT with a categorised climb should be Froome's forte, He can ride at a steady pace up a climb much better that the rest who are used to using them to attack.
What about the descent. I remember the 2008 Dauphine TT where Valverde won. Team HighRoad studied the replay and concluded that Valverde won around 1" on his opponents per corner. Think he can win a lot of time on the descent of the TT.

He's much better than the others on the flat, a flat TT would suit him so much more. Also, the TT has downhills. He descends like a blind squirrel on jet skis

Amazing
I think Contador will be the one to really benefit from the TT. The only thing he isn't magnificent at is descending and none of the others here are that much better than him. The flat will suit him more than Purito and he is climbing as well as Froome.

Agreed. Plus, he's actually quite good in the descents too.

For sure but I just mean he isn't on a Nibali-like level.
