Cavendish Ravenous on Sprint
Star of the show Mark Cavendish paces out sprint win

by: Barry Ryan

The big names were in Qatar for the start of the 6 stage tour that see's the riders race through fairly flat terrain in blistering heat and dusty conditions. No one would want to go alone out on the roads here and that proved to be the case as the opening stage would come down to a mass sprint with Sky's Manx Missle 'Mark Cavendish'able to claw back a group of riders to win the sprint with gas in the tank.

Cavendish said "Im here to win, we didnt agree to come here to make up the numbers or just test out situations, but we came here with the intention of getting a good result for the team and on a personal level, wins are always welcome"

With teams also involved in the Etoile de Besseges and Vuelta a Mallorca, Rabobank sent out a squad including current Tour of Qatar winner Mark Renshaw, as well as face of the team Robert Gesink for his first taste of racing in 2012. Unfortunately for Rabobank the heat got the better of them and they never made any impression on the race. Gesink shrugged "We didnt work well as a team, we never made any impact when we tried to move through the peloton and as it stands we have alot of hard work ahead to gain anything from this tour"

Kristoff Part Deux
Katusha rider retains Yellow Jersey

by: Barry Ryan

Alexander Kristoff continues to grow his reputation as he retains his Yellow Jersey in Mallorca with a 2nd stage win, continuing his impressive form in 2012.

This win came off the back of a late surge by the Katusha team who appeared to made a mistake tactically as they lost control of the peloton and had to claw their leader back into the race with alot of effort in the second part of the race.

Kristoff's team mate who led him into the sprint 'Oscar Friere said "Its not often you get a chance to start this dominant in a tour, so for us and Alexander (Kristoff) its important we continue to give him all the opportunities required to take the victory"

Brilliant Bauke
Mollema times it right

by: Barry Ryan

The Etoile de Besseges came to a frantic close today as the riders rode an individual time trial over 10km to close what has been an exciting race in France.

Once again we had the resurgent Rabobank team take the honours as their Dutch rider Bauke Mollema set the target time early, which no one could match to give Rabobank their 2nd straight stage win to end a race that has been a struggle for them to get through.

Outside of Mollema, Rabobank had 3 other finishers in the top 10 and also could celebrate the Polka Dot jersey win of Matti Breschel as a little trickle of success is finally falling their way.

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/baukeitt.png
Above: The fans push Mollema on to his success in the time trial

Pansen said "Its brilliant for us, alot of hard work, yes its been trying and we had alot of doubts in the earlier stages... BUT we have reap some rewards in the last 2 days and for Matti (Breschel) to win the Mountain points category its a credit to him for the hard work he put in during those tough slogs"

As for the winner overall, Thor Hushovd did enough to edge out the FDJ - Bigmat pairing of Geslin and Bonnet to hold on to the Yellow Jersey and secure a fine win. Hushovd smiled "Amazing, I knew I had to just keep going in that time trial.. only a disaster would have ruined it for me, it wasnt a great way to finish in that stage but we won and I thank everyone at BMC Racing and our sponsors for all the support to get us to this position today"

Team Orders see BMC Through
Sky push hard but are unable to break BMC

by: Barry Ryan

A team time trial breaks up the tour early on as the individual is removed from the equation and now relies on his team mates to ensure that they stay on the pace.

For Cavendish, his Sky team pushed hard as the last crew on the trial, but with BMC already over the line in a competitive 13'23 the British team fell shy by 4" allowing BMC to collect the win.

Above: They Sky and BMC trains show the field how to do it, with the latter picking up 1st place

Elsewhere pre-race favourites Garmin-Sharp had a nightmare with 2 of their riders falling off the pace to trail home, whilst Rabobank left the stage with egg on their face after finishing up over 1'30 behind the pace and have it all to do if they are to regain any pride in this years tour.

Not the best start for Rabobank in Qatar after stage 1 and 2.
But since none of your guys is in the top of the GC, it could prove to be your luck if the pack would allow you to break away Wink

Good luck with the next stages Smile

Cheers, yeah very nice to collect that win.. I think I benefitted from the leaders being content on their placing, so we squeezed it.

Id love to have another go at Qatar, its been a shambles bordering on embarassing... however we can learn from the mistakes and get better (I hope)!

Cheers for checking in Smile

Eu' Better Believe It!
Euskaltel - Euskadi rider Sanchez shatters the field

by: Barry Ryan

Brutal was the word used by the Katusha team after that stage, not only had they failed to maintain a steady team effort but also they saw Alexander Kristoff fall well off the pace by over 2 minutes as the Spanish team Euskaltel - Euskadi got their rider Samuel Sanchez into the lead position as he won the gruelling Deia stage by 30" from nearest rival Daniel Moreno, ironically from Katusha.

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/breakmal.png
Above: Early breakaway in the 3rd stage as Kristoff see's 2 days hard work fall apart

Euskaltel - Euskadi Team Manager Miguel Madariaga spoke "It has been a tough stage, you can see how hard it is here in Mallorca as Kristoff lost all the work he done in the first 2 stages. We knew that if we broke, that only a few riders could stick with us and in the end Samuel (Sanchez) had that little bit extra about him today"

Tomorrow will see the Vuelta a Mallorca draw to conclusion with another long stage in Inca, Sanchez will defend a lead of just under 30" and hope to collect a home win for his team.

Guar'Winieri
Astana rider holds off challenge in long sprint

by: Barry Ryan

Another long, hot, flat stage in dusty Qatar for the teams as Mark Cavendish and Sky Procycling set out looking to maintain their place on top of the classification.

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/s4sky.png
Above: Cavendish kept nicely placed by his team as he maintains his Yellow Jersey

The early pace was often set by the Sky team as Cavendish was kept in prime position should any attack take place, yet coming into the final sprint he would get a little tied up in the pack, as Jacopo Guarnieri kept his head on the inside to snatch the stage win on the line.

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/s4guar.png
Above: Guarnieri can celebrate after a strong finish to clinch the stage

Cavendish said after the stage "Its good enough, we still have the lead, I did have a chance in the sprint but if you dont get clear air to attack then its hard to pull it off"

At the other end of the racing spectrum, Rabobank once again struggled for any momentum with rumours that the team are potentially looking to cut their losses and withdraw from the Tour, given their woeful effort so far.

Dramatic Climax in Mallorca
Moreno chases down Sanchez but misses out

by: Barry Ryan

Spanish delight as the 4 stage soiret in Mallorca came to a tantalising finale as the 30 second lead of Samuel Sanchez was almost chased down by Katusha's Daniel Moreno who won the stage ahead of the aforementioned 'Sanchez.

Unfortunately for Moreno, Sanchez saw his attack and chased hard into the final sprint and although he had no chance of catching his rival, he did enough to prevent Moreno snatching the Overall Yellow Jersey by a mere 8".

An exasperated Sanchez said "When I saw him set clear I knew I had to go for it myself. The team had kept everyone honest, but Daniel (Moreno) can be explosive so I just had enough in me to chase him and in the end you just have to hope that time is on your side"

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/mallend.png
Above: Moreno solo's to the stage win, but its just not enough to win the Overall Classification

Elsewhere Garmin - Sharp's Danielson would be crowned King of the Mountains, Katusha's Kristoff collected the Points category in no small part to his opening pair of stage wins, whilst John Darwin Atapum of Colombia - Coldeportes did enough to be classed as Young Rider of the Tour.

Racing Overshadowed by Rabobank
Pansen call's end to participation; Garrar outguns Cavendish

by: Barry Ryan

If there is something you didnt expect in todays stage it would be Cavendish losing out in a sprint that he had the advantage in... well that did happen, Farrar of Garmin-Sharp blistered his way to the stage win in an epic showdown.

However the big shock was that Rabobank decided to call it quits on their stay in Qatar and leave the tour after half of the stage, with all 7 riders looking dis-interested and struggling over 5 minutes behind the peloton.

Team Manager Albers Pansen said "Its not a decision we took lightly, we saw the attitude of the guys, their condition and our status in the race. It boiled down to maintaining the health both physically and mentally of our guys, im the one who made the final call and ill take the flak"

With that scandal out of the way, Farrar was all smiles after he surprised the field by coming from the tail of Cavendish to beat the 'Manxmissle' and secure a fine stage win.
